I think the way Tulane let’s students know early concerning admission and merit aid is a great idea. I don’t know
why their competitors, such as U Miami, don’t do the same thing. I think it gives Tulane a leg up on a certain group of students they are competing for.

You are exactly right. It has been a brilliant marketing strategy for some years now. Every admissions cycle there are people that talk about how Tulane was not very high on their list, but they applied anyway. Then they got the early notice of admission and especially the large amount of merit aid, and they suddenly consider Tulane much more seriously. They come visit, and more often than not Tulane rockets up their list to either the top or at least the top 3. Getting people to visit campus is almost always a huge plus.

@fallenchemist I wasn’t going to apply for the DHS because I’m not really sure what kind of project to submit but I was considering the PTA if I can think of something to write for the essays. Do you have any idea what kind of chances there are for the PTA?

It is really hard to say. There are 50 PTA awards, and I would guess over 1,000 applications. But what makes it hard to say is that there is no way to know how many of those applications are legitimate contenders based on stats alone. There are always some number of people that apply whose stats pretty much eliminate them from the start. But I really don’t know if that is 100 people or 300. Plus a lot of those people will apply for both awards, and some will win the DHS, so they drop out of the PTA pool.

So in the end, the odds are certainly tough, but they are zero if you don’t apply. Whether or not the time and effort are worth it to you is directly related to how much the ~$17,000/year difference between a PTA and the Presidential makes to you and your family.

Loving our mailman today! DD rec’d Presidential/Honors invite.
35 ACT (36, 36, 35, 32) , 4.3 GPA, hardest courses available in top ranked private school. Lots of AP’s & great ECs. Time to finish her DHS & PTA apps. Already booked flights for Top Scholars Weekend- really looking forward to meeting other prospective students & their families!
Congrats to all who have heard and those who are still in the process. And thank-you to FC for all the helpful posts!

Love to see that, @iampia!! And thanks for the shout-out, but it is all due to her and your family.

So many great results rolling in from such incredible students. Wouldn’t it be great if every one of you people getting these high awards went to Tulane. What a great cohort that would be. Fortunately plenty do, more every year. Each class keeps topping the last one by a little bit, and it puts Tulane in the top 30 or so of research universities in terms of average stats, as far as I have been able to calculate (and others have confirmed). You put that together with the high affinity Tulane students have for service, and then the overall spirit that is one of the highest levels of all schools (according to many visitors) and it really makes for a great combination.

OK, I know that is very rah-rah, but it is hard not to be that way when I see these results for students that are genuinely excited about Tulane. I know they won’t all go, since they will get other offers from many very fine universities, but it is fun to think about.

My Gibson account still says that that my secondary school report hasn’t been received even though my counselor supposedly sent it on the 3rd. Is this normal, and is anybody else having this problem? I’m from Tennessee.

Just curious if there is anyone else who had a child apply with the priority application who’s application has been complete for quite some time who hasn’t heard anything. Thanks.

My son Admission packet received yesterday. He got Presidential Scholarship(32k per year) and admitted into Honors program. Pretty excited. I posted his stats in earlier posting

@tobester I’m having the same problem. Only my secondary report says incomplete, but everything else that was sent (that supposedly is sent together with the report) was received on the 3rd…
