It is new, and the notion that they might not get accepted until after May 1st is ludicrous. They state you can wait for the decision even if its after May 1st, but no other school will wait. So, you’re sort of locked into Penn State at that point. I don’t think there will be many students on the wait list that wait until after May 1st for a decision.
The wait list decision isn’t until May 15, and then you will have one week to decided whether to accept. May 1 is the deadline for Penn State acceptance UNLESS you are waitlisted for SHP. Then you have until the 22nd I suppose.
You’re right. Who is going to wait until mid may to make their decision? What if the second choice has a deadline prior to that?
They are not doing kids any favors with the wait list.
The NATIONAL deadline is 5/1. So, second choice deadline will have passed for sure.
I am wondering if the waitlist is more designed for students that are going to go to Penn State regardless of acceptance into SHC??? Just a thought…
That may be the reality. But they clearly state that the deadline to accept PSU offer will not be May 1 for those wait listed to SHC. For those students the deadline (for PSU and SHC) will be one week after acceptance decision on May 15th.
But I think you’re right. In practice, students will decide whether they are going to PSU independent of SHC decision and just hope for the best (and maybe re-apply next year).
In that case, they wouldn’t need to extend the deadline to accept Penn State’s admission offer, though. The whole thing is just a little odd.
Agree - this might make things more confusing based on students making this life changing decision with many offers and choices that many students and families will contend with. Hopefully it just all works out as I am confident it will. Good luck to all.
Well, that’s just odd timing. Schreyer kids typically have their new student orientation first as they get priority registration…like end of May.
My kids aren’t even out of High School until June. LOL
I’m new to this conversation but have been lurking! My son applied to Schreyer, interviewed, his application is complete according to the website. But he did not receive an email about the decision date! I’m concerned! I guess we will log in next week to see, but I’m worried something is wrong with his application!
Mass emails have a tendency to not get everywhere they intend to go (bouncing or ISP blocking spam). I wouldn’t worry about it. You’ll find out on Tuesday (right?).
Thanks! I’m hoping it just got lost in email land!
There was a waitlist last year (my daughter was on it). To have a chance to get off of the waitlist, you had to accept being on the waitlist AND you had to accept admission to Penn State. When we spoke with them last year, they told us that you had to accept by May 1 to remain on the waitlist. My daughter was then offered SHC admissions in mid-May - but she was already committed to Penn State at that point. Once offered admission to SHC, you had 1 week to accept that offer.
She had already signed up for regular orientation for June, and then switched to the Schreyer orientation at the end of May when she accepted that offer, so she did get to register early. And that orientation was really well done.
Also, there were kids who did not receive offers from the waitlist last year, so it’s not a sure thing. If you are waitlisted, I would recommend making the decision with the offers in hand, and knowing that there are opportunities to apply to Schreyer later and/or get involved in strong academic pursuits regardless. For us, Penn State was the right place, but we were thrilled that she wound up in Schreyer!
Good luck!
@Bing27 — I would call Admissions and ask them to double check that everything is ok. At a school this big, sometimes things go wrong and I would take the time to be sure. You can’t possibly be the only person who asks questions like that!!
This may be an unpopular opinion, but if you are considering Penn State only because of Schreyer, I would encourage you to consider Penn State regardless of the Schreyer decision.
Schreyer is great and all. But Penn State is pretty amazing without SHC. There are amazing opportunities. full stop. no qualifiers. While Schreyer may open doors, plenty of kids - SHC and non-SHC are doing the same things. Yes, honors classes are smaller. But you can have similar faculty interaction if you take initiative without those classes. When I look at the credit requirement, it is less than 50% of credits are honors. The rest are with the regular population. And many of those kids are pretty darn smart also.
So, if the news comes back not as you are hoping, don’t despair. Yes, I know there is a scholarship attached. But there are still amazing opportunities for anyone at Penn State.
Thanks for the help…I went through my son’s email and it was in the junk folder. All is well!
I think the notion…at least for my son…is that when comparing very similar schools (VT, Clemson, Penn State, Wisconsin, etc) that getting into Schreyer could push it over the top. I don’t think it’s an all-or-bust thing, but it’s certainly a difference maker.
Today’s the day. Good luck everyone.
good luck
