Yep, just saw. Son was not "selected for membership’, as they put it. This makes his decision easier I think.
My son was not selected. I am really surprised. My husband and I both were in Penn State Honors Program. He is second in his class and will complete an associates degree this summer. He did undergraduate research and was V.P. of Student Council as well as tons of other volunteer work. Just wow…
Waitlisted
1570 SAT (though they don’t look at test scores)
4.0 UW + 17 AP classes
Incredible ECs (this is the most standout part of my app)
Good essays; maybe not incredible but definitely good
Received provost’s scholarship
Schreyers likely is waitlisting/denying students they think won’t be attending PSU, likely high stats kids and such.
My son was accepted. His sister is already part of SHC.
The practice of schools doing this is so frustrating. My son has been wait-listed or deferred on all of his “safety” schools and admitted to schools that were more difficult to get in. The issue is that he preferred this safety schools to the other schools, so now he doesn’t have that choice. Penn State in Schreyer, for example, would have probably gotten him to go to Penn State, while now he likely won’t. I hate this practice by schools. They should offer the best students, wait-list the next wave, and pull from the wait-list as the best students choose elsewhere. Yield protection is a bad phrase in our household at the moment.
Who said that SHC is practicing yield protection? An 18 yr old kid who applied? Because he clearly is an expert on SHC admissions.
The bottom line is that they had their largest pool of applicants and they are trying to fill a class of 300 kids … this is the part of Penn State that is not stats-driven. All those essays made a difference.
So, to those of you who were admitted, congratulations.
And to those of you who did not receive the news you hoped, I wish you luck in your endeavors - whether it be at Penn State or elsewhere.
My son was not selected either. He is very disappointed and I’m trying to lift his spirits letting him know he is not alone. Filling a class of 300 from probably 3,000+ applicants makes it nearly impossible to get in and what is meant to be will be. Now I’m a bit concerned since he had narrowed down his choices to Penn State and VT and I think Penn State just fell behind VT although he didn’t get into VT Honors either. Hopefully, he will feel better about it in a day or so.
Yield protection runs rampant in honors colleges… just look at Purdue’s HC:
they look at test scores and gpa, and 1570s and 1580s were rejected while 1300s and 1340s were accepted… many of the rejected HC kids also got scholarships, which are more selective than the HC.
Makes a lot of sense
Thanks.
On my Schreyer portal I don’t see a decision, it says “You may check the status of your Schreyer Honors College application below”, but I don’t see anything about my status below anywhere. All of the items listed have green check marks. Does anyone else have this issue or know why it’s doing this?
did not get in. congrats to everyone who did!
waitlisted. haha nice. Guess i ain’t gonna go to Penn State.

My daughter has the same thing?
@carefreeht My son had to use the link from the email they sent on 2/20 and login from there.
Accepted!!
OOS
Animal Sciences (pre-vet)
4.0 uw, 4.59 w GPA
Lots of leadership, extracurriculars, APs, and in a competitive magnet program
Good essays and recommendations
Just curious to those accepted- did you also receive the Procost Scholarship? Wasn’t sure if students can receive both? My son was not accepted to SHC but received Provost. Congratulations if you were accepted!
My son had already received the Provost award, and now since he was accepted to SCH, he will get that additional amount. They are cumulative for him. This makes PSU his front runner. We have a few reach schools still in play, but PSU is probable at this point.
My S got accepted to Schreyer Honors College. Got 5K scholarship and nothing more. Has not got Provost award (How much is it in $$? anyone who has got it). We are OOS, don’t know if it makes sense to go with other schools offering better scholarship money
My daughter did not get in to SHC so knocks Penn State out of the running for us. Congratulations to all who got in!
