Admission Decisions Timeline for Tulane

thanks, everyone. Feel better now!

csshsm - Thanks for the confirmation. So she has gotten her online acceptance? And just curious, since I am sure you are highly aware of these things already…

Is she trying for the DHS? Also there are many scholarships for Louisiana residents only. Just figured can’t hurt to mention these things to be sure.

csshsm-
Real snow is forecast where?? Can I slap my skis on yet??

Fallen Chemist- Yes, the electronic acceptance finally came yesterday, so now we wait for the hard copy. And she is doing DHS and the special LA scholarships.
And JYM–believe it or not, snow is forecast for Southeast LA for tomorrow night!!! It is pretty sunny right now so I find that hard to believe, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. You might need those skis.

Thought I would add my data point: 11/10 is the day ds got the “working to render a decision” msg. I called yesterday and had to leave a msg asking when they thought a decision would be made. Haven’t heard back anything. Ds, I thought, would be a no-brainer admit. He did the priority app at Tulane and two other schools the same weekend and already has heard back from one of them. We haven’t even visited the school so it’s not at the top of his list or anything, but it’s kind of annoying that a supposedly “quick decision” isn’t so quick after all.

It took three weeks for my application to show complete. Those I spoke to in admissions told me not to worry about it because they were swamped. I think I called on a Wednesday or Thursday regarding that. The rep I spoke to in admissions told me not to worry about it until the following Tuesday; if my status wasn’t updated, they’d check on it and see if I had to resend. The following Monday, my status changed. If you sent everything on the 12th, I’d wait until at least the 7th or the 8th of this month to question it, but I’m sure you won’t have to. Things are trickling in very slowly and they’re doing the absolute best they can to sort through all of it.

My brother heard 8 days after being notified his file was complete. He’s been accepted and our family is so happy!

Jane2: Wonderful!

Youdon’tsay: I agree it would seem annoying after they made statements promising something else. But, just to say again and be complete about this, the letter I saw from the admissions office says they are running at a rate 10% ahead of last year in number of apps. That would be 44,000 apps!! To put that in perspective, 2 years ago it was 34,000, last year just under 40,000. And to really give you some idea how much it has changed, the number was 11,000 as recently as 2002. I can say with some assurance that the staff has not quadrupled in that same time frame. Tulane is hot (predictions of snow notwithstanding), and I hope your S will not weigh this wait time too negatively. BTW, I would highly recommend a visit if it is at all possible, especially if he likes what he gets from Tulane in the acceptance letter. Tulane, along with a handful of other schools, gets a lot of converts due to a visit. By converts I mean students who really didn’t think they were all that interested and then make Tulane their #1 choice. It happens a lot. Not always of course, but a lot.

Finally: If it does snow that would be 2 years in a row! That would be amazing.

My daughter informed me today that she has been accepted at Tulane. She
finally checked online, so I am not sure when it was actually posted. She sent
in the app and transcripts close to Nov. 15th. It was a priority application. I don’t
know how they are processing the apps, as I see some are processed quickly and
some are taking a lot longer. She has not received anything by mail yet. I do have
another daughter who is a freshman this year at Tulane. Good luck to all who are applying. It is a wonderful school!

^ As if I weren’t posting enough, I’d just like to confirm the above about visits…

I’ve been bombarded (to put it lightly) with mail from Tulane since my sophomore PSATs. I wasn’t interested at all. In fact, I resented Tulane, just because I was getting so much mail. I also had absolutely no interest in New Orleans; the only thing I’d ever heard about it was “Katrina, Katrina, Katrina” so attending a “hurricane ravaged school” in a “hurricane ravaged city” wasn’t exactly my idea of a great college experience. Plus, I didn’t want to go so far away from home (I’m in New York). April of my junior year (so, last April), we went to visit some family friends who live in NOLA, and I was basically dragged onto the plane kicking and screaming. Why would I want to go to New Orleans? What is there to do there?

Well, the second our cab from the airport entered the French Quarter, I was hooked. By the next morning, I had declared that New Orleans was the only other city on the planet that I’d live in, and I’d move in a heartbeat (which is an extreme rarity for a proud New Yorker such as myself). My family made me go visit Tulane. And my rationale at that point was, why not? It was love at first sight. I’ve been obsessive about the school ever since. By the time we had to leave New Orleans, I was being dragged, kicking and screaming, onto the plane back to NY.

So, yeah, visiting really works. :)

I certainly wasn’t directing my reply to anyone in particular and I’m sure that there are people that have shared info that is based on fact. My concern was more on postings that seemed to contribute to increased anxiety (which is already high) and I thought it would be helpful if we made a distinction between what was fact or conjecture. I heard what you said but this is not always the case. There are many saying that the strong students are accepted first while borderlines are put on hold but a couple parent’s have already indicated that this is not always the case. Anyway, there is no “fight” here fallenchemist, your entrys are interesting and often encouraging.

No problem newyorkmom, I just wanted to be clear. I do agree with you completely that there often is conjecture based on very limited information. And thanks for the compliment, always nice to hear.

I do wonder how much it depends on the individual adcom. For example, if the adcom for California is out traveling, clearly that takes a lot more time away from their ability to respond than the ones that cover the Southeast and Midwest, potentially. I really don’t have a feel for that part of the process.

Has anyone been admitted w/o the guidance form? THey have my transcript, but it says they are missing guidance report. Just checking to see if any of you made it in, without it.

Ds isn’t in the least worried as, like I said, Tulane isn’t high on his list. I encouraged him to apply and, because the app was free and with no essay, he did. I have many friends who went to Tulane and speak highly of it, and I just thought it would be a great fit in terms of academics, size, etc. When we went to the reception in town, we were all VERY impressed. I think a spring break trip to check it out (should he ever get in!) would be great.

I think an e-mail to those “priority” applicants should be sent to say it will take xx number of weeks. That’s all. Like I said, I assumed he would get in without a problem so if they were rushing those through who were “on the top” that he’d be in that group. :)

ccshsm-
SNOW?!?!?! Happened last year at exam time too!! My H texted our s and asked how he was enjoying it (it was only about 9 am NOLA time) DS texted back asking for clarification. DH said LOOK OUT YOUR WINDOW! [Tulane University Admission Blog- Maya: December 2008](Tulane University Admission Blog- Maya: December 2008)

S2 Applied Oct 16, and had all info sent. Nothing changed for weeks. Finally had to fax everything. Transcript still missing. Had to fax transcript while admissions person stood by machine and acknowledged receiving it. Status changed to under review about Nov 20. No change since then. S2 has very good stats and ECs. We figure he’ll hear by the 15th.

Just an update in case anyone else is worried about the “hear by December 15th” change in wording…d got accepted today, 3 days after that wording changed from the generic “file under review” wording. Now I just need to see if she gets any merit consideration, and if so, get her on an airplane!

IDAD, my DS is in a similar situation to you but a little worse. DS applied around Oct. 10th. School took forever to send transcript until Nov. 2. School showed DS the receipt showing sent and received by Tulane. Status of incomplete continued showing online so contacted admission rep. School sent it again on Nov.19th to fax with admission rep. standing at machine, getting it and walking it over to records. Yet as of today, online still says file incomplete. Very frustrating and don’t know what else to do? DS will send another email to admission’s rep but shouldn’t the online status have changed by now???

UPDATE: Finally got someone in admissions.

Ds, when he sent in his priority app, marked RD, not EA, so he’s at the bottom of the pile. The woman said he likely won’t hear until January.

Ugh. Unfortunate mistake, but at least it explains your delay. I suppose in the end it all comes out the same, right? Just some extra tension which no one likes.
