admissions question

Congratulations!!! WOW… SO EXCITING. I HOPE I SEE THAT STATUS ONE DAY!!!

Lizard…Thanks for the encouragement. I texted my mother(who lives in Tampa) to role play with me on what to say and she said that she wanted to call because she had several questions that she wanted to ask. Neither of us had called before. She said that the USF admissions staff member said that the delay could be to review all the information(essays and additional information that was provided) to make sure that I was a good fit for USF. He told her that it may take awhile and that they review all applicants closely to see if they are a good match as they want all admitted students to succeed. My mother said that he did add that because the GPA was so low that they may be taking extra time to review the file to look for strengths. Fingers crossed.

Good luck! I’ve called colleges before, and you don’t have to stress about it. My convo to USF when they wouldn’t receive my transcript went like this:

“Hi. I sent my transcript in, and you didn’t get it.”
“We’re working on it; we’re busy.”
“Okay, thanks”

It can be pretty informal. :)

@ nickirows
CONGRATULATIONS on your acceptance and could you please share your SAT/ACT GPA stats for my curiosity and sanity ?
Also, how long ago did you apply ?
Thanks

I don’t want to seem like I’m trying to dish out a “serves you right” kind of reaction, but USF is no longer a “safety-school.” Our admissions and standards are just as rigid as that of FSU and UF, so expect the same kind of pressure and stress applying to USF. While other people’s profiles might not have been as academically “attractive” as yours, that does not always mean you will have an absolute better chance of getting accepted, nor does it guarantee your acceptance.

@Daviddj

I had a 2100, 4.2W, 3.6UW. I’m also an IB student, I so I did a lot of extracurriculars and such. And my mom was an alum, so that helped. :slight_smile: Good luck!

@JoshBULL.

Actually, USF’s admissions are not as “rigid” as that of FSU and UF. USF’s 50% of freshmen have a 24-28 ACT, while UF has 28-32, and FSU has 25-29. USF’s 50% of freshmen have a 3.51 - 4.12 GPA, while UF has 4.1 - 4.4 GPA, and FSU has 3.6-4.2 GPA.

LOL they don’t care if your mom went there… trust me, I asked about it bc I have 2 siblings who went there. They said “no, we care more about your SAT scores and your GPA.” haha

Okay, that’s cool. I wasn’t aware of that information, so I put it out there just in case.

@nickirows:

I would like to see your source for that information and how recent that source was. While I do not attest that UF is an outstanding university, in comparison to the statistics you provided, USF is not significantly gapped from these numbers (especially with FSU). Outside of Florida, it’s also important to note that many people consider USF, UF, and FSU to be on parr with each other. So yes, I still affirm that USF’s standards are JUST as RIGID as FSU’s and UF’s. From what I have observed from my friends who attend all three universities, their qualities are pretty much equal (but not in comparison to my friend who was salutatorian and now attends Yale, who I consider the standard setter).

In terms of the academic stratification of freshmen profiles, USF’s standards are ever-increasing while those of FSU and UF remain pretty constant, as I’ve seen over the years. I can only expect this pattern to continue. All this considering that USF is less than half the age of UF and FSU, that’s extremely impressive.

You really need me to cite my sources? I don’t see you citing yours. But if I must:

UF Freshman Profile: [University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida)
High School GPA of 4.1 - 4.4
SAT of 1830-2090
ACT of 28 - 32

USF Freshman Profile: [Freshmen Requirements - Undergraduate Admissions at the University of South Florida](http://usfweb2.usf.edu/Admissions/Freshmen/freshman-requirements.aspx)
Middle 50% GPA: 3.51 - 4.12
Middle 50% SAT: 1090 - 1290 (Critical Reading + Math only)
Middle 50% SAT: 530-620 (Writing)
Middle 50% ACT: 24 - 28
Middle 50% ACT: 23 - 27 (English/Writing)

FSU Freshman Profile: [FSU Admissions | Freshman | Admissions | Admission Requirements](<a href=“FSU Admissions | Error 404 page not found”>FSU Admissions | Error 404 page not found)
3.6-4.2 academic GPA
25-29 ACT composite
1730-1960 SAT total.

I never denied that the requirements were not close together. I was merely pointing out that both FSU and UF both have more rigid admissions, which statistically, they do. It shouldn’t matter that people “consider” all three to be on parr with each other. That doesn’t make the admissions any more or less rigid. The fact is, the other two colleges have slightly higher requirements. Your friends opinions, once again, have no bearing on cold, hard, mathematical statistics.

And if we’re going to play the “I want to see your sources” game, then I’d like to see where you read that USF’s standards are increasing, while the other standards remain consistent.

Lizard,

Do you happen to know if there will be Admission REPS at the USF Stampede on the 19th? I just bought my ticket to fly up to Tampa from South Florida so that I can be there for the event. I do hope that I can meet with someone from UA. Thanks

Certainly USF admission office representatives will be at Stampede for Success–they are putting the event on! When you are at the event you’ll have plenty of opportunities to talk to admission officers at the meeting sessions and they will also be available between meetings to talk to you and answer any questions you have. Have fun at the Stampede, you are smart going to it and I’m sure you will find it to be well worth your while attending the Stampede. Go BULLS!

Lizard… Thanks for the support!!!

GO BULLS!!!

Hello-
Currently seven weeks and still same message;
“Your application is currently under review. A final decision will be made shortly and you will be notified by mail of the decision".

David, When I read these posts on the whole thread it makes me wonder. Maybe it is that USF doesn’t like to be used as a “safety school.” They may feel like they are being used and when students are accepted at other schools they (USF) are discarded and people who are admitted do not attend anyway. People like me really want to go to USF and I am doing everything in my power to go there. It is not a back up or a safety school. If you have no intention of going to USF why is it such an issue? It is a catch 22. You are supposed to apply to several schools but…can only go to one. Maybe the whole college application format needs to be revamped.

^^^^^^

ugh not format… Process

I’m sure they don’t care where else you apply… they want the best fit for being a Bull. relax!! there’s no reason they would turn down somebody with high credentials because they are offended that they might be used as a “safety school…” that makes no sense at all. obviously they want to recruit a better class each year, so they will take the best of the best who apply :)

Then why no answer yet on several people on this thread with very high stats? You would think that they would be notified right away. TC do you have an explanation or thought on that? I don’t think that we will receive confirmation from USF as to the reason for the delay but it is interesting to see what peoples opinions are.

Who has high stats?? sorry if I missed any posts. but I thought everyone with high stats had been admitted… and it’s the middle range that is having to wait longer. I have a 4.6 and a 32 ACT, and I got my decision about a month ago…

@tampacutie,

I have a 1560 SAT (math and reading combined) with 4.86 GPA (county screw-up with Department of Education course numbers gave me 4.0 weight for my dual enrollment classes last year and sank my GPA). I had no music or sports though, but I’ve been working as a professional programmer for past 4 years. I applied about two weeks ago, but it said I was missing my SAT scores from CollegeBoard until yesterday, when it showed that it finally received my scores. I check today and it says “Congratulations! You have been admitted to the University of South Florida!” Less than 24 hours for them to decide. But I don’t see where it says if I got into Honors College or not…

so, USF is already sending decisions for summer?
