Actually, yes. I have a very short shower in the am (5 min. or less) to wake up, shampoo etc. and I always have a shower just before bed just because it helps me sleep, lowers BP, gets my feet warm and is a transition. Also short by many standards (5-10 min.) I grew up in a family of night bathers. Anyone who came from a farm or other work where you get dirty at work generally bathes at night rather than in preparation for going in. Similarly with atheletes. That habit can hold over generationally. It is really not that weird.

I understand the idea of compromise. It’s just that the suite mate having it all her way all the time isn’t a compromise. Also people seem to be working from the idea that a morning shower is the default normal.

^^ No one’s saying she shouldn’t take a shower at night - just not as late as 1am. There’s a lot of night prior to 1am.

-- I’m wondering what the OP has decided to advise her D on this after these 11 pages of responses and I’m wondering what the OP’s D has decided to do?

OP here again - one thing I did not do is tell my daughter that she has sparked so many responses on cc!! Not sure she would approve of my posting this at all to begin with.

Daughter says she has been showering around midnight instead and has not spoken to or seen the suite mate since returning from Thanksgiving break. No news on if the suite mate either said anything to an RA or asked for a new room for next semester (I think if an RA was contacted my daughter would know).

I would hope that OP told her daughter that, as an adult, the daughter should handle the situation herself in whatever manner she and the roommate work out. Really, did any of you ever call home to your parents about such a situation? I certainly never did and if my child asked for advice about such a trivial matter, I would question whether they were indeed ready to go away to college.

Kiddie, many of us would agree your D did the right thing. not seeing or hearing from roommate is not necessarily a bad thing…hopefully the roommate sticks around for a peaceful next semester.

Who says a 1 am shower is unreasonable and inconsiderate? That may be for you, but I would find preferable to being woken up in the early morning. This is not a right/wrong issue; it is simply not a good roommate matchup. In my opinion, the most important factor in roommate matching is sleeping habits.

One of the roommates in this situation will have to bend in order to appease the other or they need to work out a compromise. Either way, OP’s daughter should start looking for a new roommate who better fits in with her lifestyle, once this living arrangement ends.

**To the other Mom of three boys, PLEASE tell me what you did to get your kids to break the Axe habit. :)

Familyof3boys… I have 3 boys 18,14, & 11. I like AXE a lot better than them not showering.:)

And just think, kiddie, you almost made it to 12 pages without someone lecturing you about how your D shouldn’t ask for advice. :D

Yes, despite starting my post with

(Please don’t lecture me on she has to deal with this on her own, she is an adult etc. - she asked for advice and I would like to provide her good advice).

I made it though over 160 replies without any lecturing - very unusual for this forum - I was expecting it within the first 10 replies!

It’s because it was such an interesting situation.

I “killed” the Axe craze with all three boys in turn after they bought Axe themselves by buying each of them in turn cologne and matching deodorant. And I bought what I like: Polo green for one, Paco Rabanne for the second and Cool Water for the third. An expensive switch but now Grandma and Grandpa have something to buy them each Christmas. The high school girls appreciated me greatly and I no longer had to smell Axe…just very wonderful men’s scent.

If you want to save money the “new” high school boy smell is Old Spice Fiji in our town. The boys roll into my house and they ALL smell like Old Spice Fiji.

Axe…<shivers> SIL bought complete sets for each of my three boys one holiday. I was tempted to empty the bottles just a bit and spray that stuff out the window each day while they were at school to make the entire process go quicker. It never entered the house again. It’s bad enough when one is wearing it, but in triplicate and different scents it’s enough to knock you out from the fumes.</shivers>

For a few years in middle school, our county had to use those awful school trailers and they held a deadly combination of middle school boy and Axe!

Stop, stop you are bringing back nightmares of returning tired from work at night and opening the door to eau d’Axe.

Old Spice Fiji - yep, my S has the deodorant, the body wash and the shampoo. Drives his sister crazy, but I kinda like it. :)

I can’t believe people are complaining about Axe. I definitely preferred it to boy funk.

*
I can’t believe people are complaining about Axe. I definitely preferred it to boy funk.*

Its never been my impression that those are the only two choices.
;)

Since I no longer luncheon with the Junior League, I don’t notice many people wearing scent at all.

momofthreeboys,

You’re fortunate your boys weren’t like some boys/young men I knew who wouldn’t shower for weeks and/or had BO advancing diets(i.e. Subsisting on mostly grilled American cheese sandwiches*).

It’s hard to miss in middle/HS gym lockers/gym, classrooms, and undergrad dorms.

I came of age before Axe came into existence.

Knew a few college classmates and HS friends’ college roommates with such a diet and reeking BO…including some who shower daily. We’ve all noticed that once they were forced due to health or other reasons to cease that diet, their BO levels decreased noticeably…sometimes to zero.

I’m calling total and complete bs on this. I have experience with an extended grilled cheese phase in the house and it didn’t make one iota of difference. Really, no difference. Now, we use wheat bread, double slices of Kraft American cheese, so if it’s the Wonderbread that caused BO then my bad. <rolling eyes=""></rolling>

megpmom–all the girls around here use the Old Spice Fiji :D. Back when the kids were in middle school there was always this haze coming out of the boy’s locker room-a haze of Axe body spray.
