Alabama Action Question

Does anyone know the exact dates of this year’s Alabama Action?

Thanks,

Bikedad

I had the same question. Just called the Honors College and they said August 8-13.

Yes, and classes start Aug 18. So, incoming freshmen have time to do Outdoor Action or Alabama Action and still participate in WOW week (Week of Welcome). That takes place from Aug 13 - Aug 17.

Have you heard if freshmen who are participating in AA can still move into their honors dorm early this year as I’ve heard they could in the past, or do they have to make other housing arrangements for the week of AA? Thanks.

Bikedad

Bikedad, my son did Alabama Action last August. He moved in the morning of August 9, went to lunch with one of his suitemates and then headed over to check in for Alabama Action. That night, there was some sort of dinner event at Riverside near the pool. Anyone who has a student interested in either Alabama or Outdoor Action should register early for the class so there is a spot for them.

How do we go about registering for Alabama Action? We are doing Bama Bound on June 1. Do we register for Alabama Action before then?

Once you’ve linked in, scroll down to the bottom of the page and you’ll see a link to the application.

My D sent her Alabama Action application in last week. She needs to follow up with an email to verify receipt. She was told via email that she could move into her permanent dorm room for Alabama Action.

I just mailed my D’s app for Alabama Action this week. The app for Outdoor Action doesn’t seem to be up yet. From what I understand they will move in their permanent dorm room in the morning (I think they have from 8:30-1 or 2 to do that) then we will leave & the Alabama Action events begin. August 8th is a Sunday & AA runs through Friday. WOW begins on Friday and goes through Wednesday, although classes begin on Wednesday August 18th (can you tell I was entering dates in my Outlook calendar this week ;)?

The payment due now for AA is $200; when they go to Bama Bound, they will register for AA which is a 1 credit course so that is an additional fee but it rolls up into their semester tuition charge.

Have a question about the hands-on projects.

What is mosaic work?

Do all students do a hands-on project, or do some just tutor/work in the classroom, with kids?

What is the start and end date?

Once your child goes to this, that’s it, they’re in college, and you may not see them again until Thanksgiving or Christmas?

Need to know when I can book my trip to Tahiti.

Just kidding. Not really.

Actually, the sooner I can get my son out of hurricane country, the better.

The specific work depends on the school and group you are assigned to. IIRC, the mosaic group ended up making “stained glass” windows. Other jobs include painting pictures on walls, painting walls, and landscaping. Unless things are changing, which it doesn’t appear so, participants get to spend time with 2-3 “buddies” that are students in the school, doing some activities and having lunch with them in between doing their assigned work projects. the actual dates were given above, but to reiterate, Alabama Action lasts from Sunday to Friday and is basically all day long with afternoon breaks so that students can do errands on campus.

Once you drop your child off, they will be too busy to be able to see you very much, you can always come visit after school starts, but otherwise they’re college students. Note that when hurricanes happen, Tuscaloosa usually gets a lot of rain. Tahiti sounds really nice when you’re running through torrential downpours, lol.

So the kids do both, work projects and mentoring?

Sounds like a great experience.

Hoping for an uneventful hurricane season. On my last visit to Birmingham, was told that they got hit pretty hard during Katrina. Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the rain. Will make sure to send son with a poncho and umbrella and extra tennis shoes.

Oh, and sorry for asking the dates. They are indeed listed in earlier posts.

You can always come see your child during Family Weekend (aka Parents Weekend).

If you apply before the Priority Deadline (April 1 this year) are you automatically admitted into the program or do they refund the money if you are not let in?

uafreshman14:

We are wondering the same thing. My D sent in the registration with the money. The check has been cashed, but she has not received any information/confirmation.

^^^

Is it showing up on MyBama under the " Pay My Student Bill" link?

I wonder if you call the honors college if they would know?

"If you apply before the Priority Deadline (April 1 this year) are you automatically admitted into the program or do they refund the money if you are not let in? "

What is this about a Priority Deadline? Is it for AA and OA? These deadlines are starting to mess with my head - I still don’t understand why, if May 1 is the official deadline for acceptance, schools do everything so early - ie. housing, now AA, scholarship acceptance (not at UA - diff. school) - the student waiitng until all his options are in is definitely put at risk of missing out or at least losing some deposit $.

I do not remember any type of priority deadline when my son paid for Alabama Action last spring, but I do know he did not file any paperwork until mid to late April. He had to wait for word from other colleges and look at their financial packages before choosing Alabama.

His deposit for Alabama Action did show up in his student receivables account, but it was not immediate. So he did e-mail the honors college for confirmation.

mom2collegekids:
Where do you find the “Pay My Student Bill” link? There is nothing showing up in Student Receivables.

It’s on the “Home” page of mybama…in the middle column…under “Currently on MyBama”…below “registration”…below “Student Billing”…
