Anyone going to UC Davis Welcome on April 2nd?

i’m going to the welcome thing they advertized on their website this saturday. anyone else attending?? im flying in from san diego friday night. anyway, if anyone is, we should definitely meet eachother and form a tight bond that can will continue to be enforced with an active addiction to the college confidential uc davis forum.

i was there today... it was a great program and i think i am sold!

Really? Unfortunately I can't make it but I'd like to hear all about it as Davis is one of the top colleges I'm considering.

So whoever went or is going could you write up a paragraph or something, or even upload some pics of the event, that would be great, thanks...

well, for one thing the campus is gorgeous! whenever i used to think "davis," i thought: farm, cows, flat, boring. there was no smell whatsoever, and i didn't even see any cows at all. true, it looks farm-ish for 15 or so minutes before you get to the town, but once you are in davis, it feels like home (for me, southern california, so it was great weather etc). the actual town, if you have ever seen the show gilmore girls, reminds me of stars hollow in some ways. otherwise, it reminds me of how i always used to picture connecticut in the fall to look like. tons of trees, leaves falling, cute little shops, tons of bikes and people.... there isn't a whole lot to do in the town of davis outside of cute eateries and shopping, but sacramento is only 10 minutes away with tons of stuff to do (that's where i stayed).
the campus is sooooo pretty! i've visited both public and private schools, and this does not even compare. there are bikes everywhere, but the riders are nice, and i've heard you probably don't even need a bike unless you live in dorms far away. there are PEOPLE EVERYWHERE-in a good way.. some colleges have no people anywhere, making it seem very deserted and unhappy. and everyone seems very nice and welcoming. everyone was very casual, picnicing on the lawn, playing frisbee, sleeping under trees, etc.
i didn't take the dorm tour, so i can't help there, but i've heard they are pretty nice, and there are some brand new ones too.
any more questions? i'll be happy to answer them. overall, the day pretty much sold me to davis!

ugh i wish i could have visited davis. i am considering ucsb and davis and it seems like i would like davis too. but davis is so far away, which my parents don't like (would have to fly to come home all the time = more expenses). and they don't want me to go really far, they're like "what if you get really sick" or something

also, my major (business economics) is very good at ucsb. ucsb's econ department is on the rise, and they have a recent nobel laureate in economics (he even teaches undergrads!)

i still wish i could visit davis. too bad i didn't decide this sooner b/c there's like no time left in april, plus air tickets are kinda a lot for last minute flights, and my parents are busy this month.. ehh.. but i guess it's a lost cause b/c davis only has econ. ucla and ucsb were the only ones with my major bizecon, and i didn't get into ucla, so i guess it's ucsb for me.

lilmermaide: were you considering any other schools before? what's your major?

im going tomorow and im really excited i love it there...ill upload pics for sure. but im going to berkeley :)

awakendream i'm kind of like you, between sb or davis. although i don't know what i'm going to major in. i'm considering davis since it's closer to me than sb. i need to decide fast too.

lactoseintolerant: do you have any ideas of what you want to major in at all? ya ucsb is not too far from me, but davis is very far for me... (probably 6-7 hours driving! so i'm gonna have to fly if i go there)

but the strength of ucsb's program for my major is probably the main deciding factor. ucsb is on the rise too (it was very selective this yr b/c so many people applied!)

awakened- i don't want to decide too soon because i really don't know that much about what the majors are except by looking at their names and descriptions. i'm considering arts and humanities, but i don't know how that'll go. i created a thread asking about humanities in davis and i'm considering linguistics.. but again, i don't want to finalize anything before taking some classes and talking to other people and stuff. i don't think i'll do econ though, so... but then, i've visited neither schools.

i'll probably head to davis because i know a lot more people there and it's closer to me, but i also want to make sure that i don't pick a major that they're really weak in too.

awakened- actually i didn't even want to apply to davis and even once i got in, i still wasn't interested. so yes, i was definitely considering other schools. my major is french

awakenedream:

UC davis has a fabulous business program. It has its own Business school (also med and law school). Theres this popular new major called managerial economics and its very good.

Check this link out:
http://why.ucdavis.edu/academics/majors/mecn.cfm?majors_list=divhumsci_majors.inc

Anyways, you should really pay davis a visit...you gotta see to believe

Awakened: I've been following your posts(because we applied to the same places and got rejected to the same, as well) and we have a lot in common. I'm left with deciding between UCI/Davis/SB but am only considering the latters because Irvine is too Asian and not socially involved. Also, almost everyone commutes so that sucks as well.

So I'm left with SB and Davis and feel that I should have deserved much better because of my stats, but what can you do. 1440, 3.9UC, 160 hours volunteering at UCLA Med Center, etc, etc.

I'm also leaning toward SB more because it has a better bio program with more opportunities to do research and all. Also the location can't hurt.

Anyway, just wanted to post this because a lot of the things you were going through I was as well(being ****ed at not getting into places I should have deserved, etc) but I was extremely busy so I couldn't post a message until now.

Anyway, cheers, hopefully some good stuff starts happening soon...

megathunder: I know, it's sad how everything has turned out. You deserve much more (your SAT is a lot higher than mine too). I wish you luck in your college decisions. I think I've definitely decided UCSB.

Thanks everyone on this board for Davis input, but my parents don't want me to go so far....so that rules out Davis since I would have to fly everytime to go home....I would have loved to visit but there's like no time left in the month (our April is sooo busy) and the air tickets are expensive. I've thought about this a lot. I love SoCal too much, I love the beach, and I really fell in love with UCSB when I visited.

megathunder~ maybe we'll see each other at UCSB. are you going to the open house?

megathunder:
fyi- visited davis earlier this week. apparently the division of bio science is very strong there. sounded like it was expanding even more and was going to be one of the big draws.

oh.. i saw the cows. smelled them for a bit too but thats because we were downwind =P

I missed the session for Undergraduate Admits (or whatever it was called) at 8:30 and was too tired to go to the 1:15 one :D Can anyone provide a summary of what happened in this session? I only went to the tours and the Q&A with the heads of the different colleges. Did I miss much?

When is it, awakened? I'm going to be in Germany all of next week so I don't know. Doesn't seem likely though. I'm definitely going to be doing a tour of it sometime in April but I might not make the open house.

Jeunger, I know, it's a tough choice for me. I'm going to have to look at both schools personally and decide. SB has a good science department as well, so it's going to be tough.

Do you know exactly whose science department is stronger? I haven't had a comparo on SB and D in that area yet.

Btw, awakened, where in so cal are you? I'm in a town called Redondo Beach, south of L.A...

megathunder: Germany?!? Wow that's cool! Why are you going there. I love Europe! I'm from the San Fernando Valley (LA County... about 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles).

The Open House is April 9. But you can go there any other day for a normal tour.

It's a little family trip for spring break.

Btw, my parents and I are having a heated debate on where I should go. My mom wants me to go to Davis because she heard the bio department is strong, my dad to Irvine because he heard it's the most "intelligent" of the three(sb, davis, irvine), and me sb because it's the most well rounded and will give me the best college experience. Also, both mom and dad don't want sb because they heard its a party school and I won't concentrate.

Ehhh, the struggle...

that's difficult (w/parental pressue), but if possible, you and your parents should visit all 3 campuses and decide for herself. your parents can pester the tour guides and ask as many nitpicky questions as they want. lol

i guess i'm lucky, my parents went to school in asia so they're clueless about stereotypes and reps of the schools here, ie ucsb.
