Ap Art History

you cannot use venus of willendorf or lascaux. they are prehistoric. sorry guys.

amina what school do you go to?

Is AP art history a self teach-able subject? My school doesn't offer it, so I'd love to teach myself, but I'm not sure if it's possible...

davetheman and amina - the prompt did not say you couldn't use prehistoric art. How would we be expected to know that? I seriously doubt the validity of that claim.

Whether Lascaux is under the "European tradition", however, is questionable.

MC was incredibly easy, essay's actually made you think. Hate to break it to you ReninDetroit and BrokenDreams but it was Vermeer's "The Guitar Player" (The hint was the dark shadows from the camera-obscura). Also the fur-covered cup (Oppenheim's Object) is surrealist according to Garner's. The random building was by Sullivan and the second part to the question was steel. The madonna enthroned was by Giotto.

Yanners - I would say that it's not a self-teachable subject. You could just read the book, but the books are HUGE and you'd have to retain every image. Plus, my teacher mainly used slides that weren't in our book because many important artists and works aren't represented in the book even though they're still good to know.

And the lectures help too. Plus we watched movies and stuff too. Bottom line, you could take it yourself but don't expect higher than a 2 or 3 I'd say unless you're a real genius.

yeah if you were going to think about self study you would have to have a lot of time on your hands and a lot of dedication.

Its possible yanners but you must be able to absorb everything you would read, I believe you actually learn more from the teacher lecturing rather than reading the book. The class is also offered online here.

Many books classify Dada as a subgenre under surrealism, or as a geographic parallel. But surrealism generally refers to painting, and Dada refers to assemblage and sculpture. This would be assemblage. I suppose surrealism is correct, but Dada is the better answer. I'd say AP will accept both. If you look on the scoring guides from previous years, they often will say that numerous answers are acceptable. Eg both "early christian" and "byzantine" are often acceptable; "realism" and "photorealism" and "social realism", etc.

Too bad about the Vermeer. I never would have thought about that. It seems to me like the more logical answer would be Caravaggio, though. The prompt said what arist would you attribute it too, and I would estimate that 70% of takers would attribute it to Caravaggio (for good reason). Maybe they'll accept it, or partially accept it, if you can justify it.

YES!!!
so it was Vermeer!!!

i am just going by what my teacher told me, k. if it is acceptable, then great for the people who used it. i am not trying to prove anything, just stating what i was told. so, feel free to "doubt the validity."

anyway.

why do you ask, ryan?

Yeah, I agree with you, they will probably accept both.

Yay i didn't think I was Caravaggio, but that was the only guy I could think of, and considering the style looks very similar to Caravaggio, but I didn't think Caravaggio painted such subjects.

On that fur cup, I was arguing with myself on whether it was Dada or Surrealism

On the nature question, I used Fallingwaters and Great Wall of China, I know it was complete crap, but I think I BSed it well

@ReninDetroit, I also choose Guernica and Giovanni and his Bride for the last question, seems most people I asked choose those two.

What about the quotation question...what you guys say, I think I was so off on that

I live in the atlanta area and im wondering which other schools offer AP art. I know walton does, I go to Chattahoochee.

@Yanners....I highly doubt you're be able to self study, theres jsut so much to study, I took the course, and I still had a lot of things that I didn't know

oh, well, i live in rockdale. i am sure you have heard of us.

Every single person in my class who took the test (all 11 of us) used Hokusai's Great Wave for the nature essay (I also used a Monet landscape).

My class was on a high after the MC sections, okay during the long essay and five minute essays, HIT BY A FREAKING TRUCK during the 10 minute essays with slides, and good with the quote essay and the second long essay.

I think I got a 4, maybe a 3.

I so 5ed that essay (edit: oops, meant test:D) That last essay with allegories and symbols, we had written an essay with almost that exact same prompt like 2 weeks earlier, and I made a 9 on it. I used Guernica and Allegory on the outbreak of war.

I used Pallete of Narmer and Venus of Urbino.

same with my class, somebodynew. during the break, we were so amped because of the EASY MC. then, let down during essays.

i was going to do a Monet, but then i didn't think i'd have enough points.

oh my God. did the quote essay ask for a 19th century piece???
