AP English Language and Composition Post Exam Thoughts

What do you guys think the curve will be? MC wasn’t bad. I liked the synthesis, but didn’t organize my other responses well.

Also, how many pages did you guys write? (Back and front count as two pages). I wrote 3.5 for synthesis, and 2.5 for analysis/argumentative.

Man, reading the replies that you guys wrote makes me a little sad. : (

I don’t have much new to contribute to this conversation (first-time posting here). I thought the MC was easy; rather, I thought it was way too easy compared to the practice exams that I’ve been getting in class all year round! For the ones in class, I’ve been getting roughly 35 right and the rest wrong (I have a bad habit of answering every question), which isn’t a bad mark to be fair.

For the 3 essays, I’m extremely proud of my synthesis. I wrote 2 pages (single-spaced, back and front of one page with rather tiny writing) for it and took roughly 55 minutes or so (how the heck do you guys write 4-page essays in 40min?). After finishing the MC and the synthesis, I was very, very confident that I would score a 5, but…
I got worried when our proctor said we should have finished half of our second essay by the time I just started it, and started to rush. In the end, I managed to finish a rather paltry 1 and half page rhetorical-analysis essay and didn’t even complete my final piece which I had 2 and half paragraphs for.

Overall I thought the test was fine. The multiple choice was pretty straightforward. I skipped 5 or 6 and wildly guessed on 2 questions. Overall I think I got from 30-45. The synthesis essay I feel as if I did rather well on it. I was confident on my organization and points, so I’m happy. My analytical essay on the other hand was soooooooo disjointed though :P. It was the last essay I did, and I feel as if I didn’t address the prompt too well. The persuasive essay was great though! I used really nice examples and drew from a variety of popular, historical, and literary contexts to prove my point well. Overall I hope to get a 5, though I’m probably going to get a 4.

Pretty easy.

MC was A LOT easier than the Barron/Kaplan tests I took in class.

Essays were easy. I had similar essays for my AP lang/comp class it wasn’t too bad.
Whoever gets my school’s essays, be prepared to read around 50-60 essays on A Modest Proposal.

okay wait so I’m really scared- I tried to be objective in my synthesis and just give the points, but in my diction you could tell I was obviously taking a negative stance…I presented it as they should consider this but I pointed out the obvious negatives. will the taking a side hurt me because it’s not directly what they were asking for? I still did what they asked for …I just kind of mentally took a side on top of that though

and I don’t know if this is giving away too much :p

i only attemted 43/54 because i suck at english as for the FRQ’s. The synthesis was easy but the other 2 were iffy.

worst case scenario: 23 RAW MC, and 5,4,4 on my essays which should equal a 3.

adiboo: ^ you should have taken a staunch viewpoint. Being iffy between whether the topic is negative or positive is not ideal.

MC was noice. Essays were pretty simple, and I love how I did a similar essay on the ACT for synthesis. Overall expecting a 5.

I just realized I confused anaphora for aphorism. Anyone know how much a penalty that might be? I mean I had the definition correct, just the wrong word.

I thought the analysis was easier than usual. I had been doing poorly at analysis for most of this year, but last couple of weeks I have really gotten good at them. I think my points were insightful.

hong214: believe me i clearly took one side on all my essays by “iffy” i meant i wasnt comfortable with the topics on the FRQ.

FutureENTSurgeon: Sorry, my post was actually meant for the post before you.

The multiple choice was easy, but I ran out of time on the essays. I’m used to typing them for class.

Let’s put it this way: I didn’t eat breakfast that morning, but I was full when I left the testing center. (I ate it for breakfast)

I’m not quite sure why people are spreading rumors on here about how hard it is to get a five, haha, it’s really not. I did a ton of calculations to find what score I could get since I self-studied it. Basically:

A 35/55 on the MC and a 5,5, and 6 on the essays is a 4

A 35/55 on the MC and a 6, 6, and 7 on the essays is a 5

^ 35/ 54 (there were 54 questions not 55) and 5,5,6 equals a 3, not a 4. And think about, would they really award someone a 4 (well qualified) if they got nearly half of the MC wrong and only mediocre essays
