Well, that is a disappointment. I suppose that if you already have an iPod and a printer, you would prefer a $100 gift card, but I would rather have seen the old rebate plan.

^(@Blaugrana)- I know! I am so mad at Apple right now. They’re being cheap with us this year, usually they give out a free iPod touch that’s worth $230 or whatever plus a printer that’s worth $100, and we get, what, $100 total where previous years got around $300 between the iPod & printer? That is SO NOT FAIR!

You know, if I didn’t absolutely need a Mac for what I’m doing in college, I’d probably go and buy another PC instead because Apple is being dumb. But I can’t, I need the Mac!!!

I bet some people are going to go buy a PC instead because of this. Maybe Apple will sell less Macs this summer for college than usual, and they’ll learn what customers expect!

They’re really trying to push the Mac App Store this year it seems. Kind of strange that they would do this since the original Mac/iPod deal really helped Apple move out their lower end iOS devices and make way for their fall product refresh. Although there is some really cool software in the app store, I’m also pretty disappointed that they’re not doing the iPod Touch deal this year.

I have been keeping my hopes up for this promotion for the past couple of months, and this news saddens me. As a potential CS major, I was planning on getting an Apple computer with the free iPod Touch so I could start dabbling around in iOS development. Since I have neither, it looks like I’m going to have to just shell out around $200 more to get an iPod now. I suppose the $100 credit will come in handy in some ways, but it still really stinks, especially when Microsoft’s pushing the free Xbox 360 deal this year. Oh well, I guess that’s the way things go sometimes.

^Yeah it stinks, but overall you’ll be glad you got your mac no matter what. The iOS environment is being heavily integrated into OSX Lion, the next Mac operating system, which will be released next month for $30. You obviously won’t get the full iPhone/iPad experience, but the multi touch gestures along with some really neat features like launch pad and mission control make it much more like iOS then ever before. Its only a matter of time before OSX and iOS are fully integrated anyways. Most likely in 2 years when the next Mac OS is released, maybe sooner gauging by the success of iOS and the rapid increase in Mac sales.

"In spite of initial skepticism from industry watchers, Apple’s annual Back to School promotion is off to a strong start, pushing a fourfold increase in Mac sales over that of Windows PCs by college students in some circles.

Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry issued a note to investors earlier this week pointing out that education sales of Apple’s Macs have been significantly outselling Windows PCs. The firm’s research indicated that “80% of incoming students are buying Apple Computers vs. Windows Computers.”

Apple this year is offering education customers a $100 iTunes store credit with the purchase of a qualifying Mac. The deal was originally thought to be less attractive than the promotion from recent years, but, based on the recent statistics, interest in this year’s promotion has not suffered as a result of the change.

Interestingly enough, though Apple’s advertisements suggest students would use the credit to buy apps from the Mac App Store, most are choosing to buy songs. The report also notes that Senior students are showing “strong interest” in purchasing an iPad before school begins, while more students attending online universities such as Phoenix Online are buying Macs than in years past."
