FSSP is really great for meeting people and for getting a couple classes out of the way before school starts. They are doing things a bit differently next year so everyone who does FSSP is going to be housed in San Nicolas for the whole year. It is expensive though which is why I chose not to do it, and you only take 7-8 units.

The halls don’t have their own food. There are 4 dining commons, 2 of which are in the Chi5. One is directly attached to ft and the other is by manzanita. The one by manzanita is usually the best for lunch but about equal to the ones in the Chi5 for everything else. Those three are all pretty good. The only one I would nt recommend is the one attached to ft. That one is the same as all the rest for breakfast/brunch, but usually not good for anything else. You’ll be well fed though don’t worry.

Yeah people smoke in the halls just don’t be an idiot about it and VENTILATE!

@inprettypatterns. No you’re not allowed to have a coffee machine but honestly no one actually cares about that rule. I have a water heater and my RA comes in to use it sometimes. Plus RAs can’t just look in your room. They do have coffee at the dining commons though and it’s pretty good so unless you’re an avid coffee drinker a coffee maker might just take up extra space you dont really need.

I answered some similar questions earlier so if you read through the feed you might be able to find your answer there if not let me know!

ok thank you!

Do freshman usually get the dorms they ask for?

Are the transfer days worth going to? Or should I just do it online?

fred11, sorry I forgot to mention I’m a transfer and would be able to transfer over 60 or 70 units (semester) so wouldn’t I be able to get one then?

Also, how hard is it to get a part time job in the area (including on campus)? If I have to live on campus I’m gonna have to make up the difference by working.

To a UCSB student who surfs- Any recommendations on how to keep a longboard at school? Definitely want to have one for those long SB flat spells but they don’t fit that well into the dorm. Would a ceiling mount or something work?

It really depends on if you get lucky or not. I know lots of people who got their fourth choice and lots who got their first. If you apply to live in a living learning community you have a much better chance of getting the dorm you want (almost 100%) but not all halls are going to have LLCs you want. You just gotta get lucky.

If you mean transfer orientation then it really depends. If you live far away then the online option is probably better. If you live close it’s a really good opportunity to meet people and get to know the school a bit better.

Sorry I didn’t realize. Yeah transfers can live in university apartments but continuing students get priority so you may not get the exact apartment complex you want but it’s still a good choice.

You have to be really quick in applying for in campus jobs especially for desk attendant positions because those are the jobs everyone wants. It’s definitely competitive for jobs in IV but if you’re not super picky you should be able to find something.

Fred11, What are the chances I will get any apartment as a transfer student, is it near 100%? I hear there is a lottery like method used to decide who gets to live there. The reason why I ask is because I’m gonna have to work a lot if I have to live in the residence halls because they are a lot more expensive.

By the way, thanks for taking the time to answer all these questions, you’re awesome!

What are LLC’s?

^Living Learning Community

Is a LLC any one of those “special” dorms listed? (Asian cultural dorm, etc)

Are we allowed to root for UCLA Basketball? Because they’re gonna have a great team this year, and ours frankly sucks.

I know but what is a Living Learning Community? How is it different?
