Bad Luck vol. Wait Listed

Just got wait listed to uconn (pharmacy), suny stony brook (biological sciences), and suny buffalo (pharmacy) . I didnt think it was possible to be wait listed to this many schools. Complete BS. I had a 92 average in one of the top public high schools in NY (graduating class over 1000) and a 1690 on SAT, tri-captain varsity basketball plus 4 other school clubs. I know complete idiots who got accepted. What are my chances of still getting in? Do you think i should call and complain? Please feedback would be appreciated.

ive gotten waitlisted at Penn State and Bentley University and i have Really good numbers, with the exception of my 1740 SAT. so dont worry, im losing hope too

anyone else get wait listed to these schools?

SB1991-you applied to three public schools. The applications to state schools has risen this year due to the economic downturn. Therefore, they have become much more competitive.

It may work out, though. Private schools seem to still be giving out plenty of financial aid, so waitlist positions in the public schools may open up.

I wish you the best of luck!

“I had … a 1690 on SAT… I know complete idiots who got accepted.”

You shouldn’t be so critical of your peers…

This will have been the most difficult year in college admissions.
Good luck.

SAT is just a test. there are people with 70 averages in my school who are just good test takers who got +/- 2000. see them perform in the classroom and you’ll know what i’m talking about

Given that the effectiveness of the SATs as an accurate gauge of intelligence is questionable, colleges do use it as a standardized measuring stick for all applicants (minus ACT-takers). Your SATs scores are probably on the low side compared to others who were accepted since your ECs and grades sound good.

This year, applying to public schools are a complete crapshoot due to everyone applying as financial safeties/options so even qualified and serious applicants should prepare to be waitlisted. I also believe specific programs, such as pharmacy, are obviously harder to get into due to the even more limited number of seats.

Speak to your guidance counselor about appealing or asking for an explanation. Good luck.

While the “SAT is just a test”, it’s a very important one nonetheless. College admissions isn’t necessarily always fair and with very large applicant pool this year, everyone is up against stiff competition.

I think you should write a letter expressing your continued interest in attending and then wait it out… Complaining to admissions almost never works, especially if you’re harsh on your peers in the process.

Complaining is tantamount to saying “Please immediately throw my file in the shredder”. Like bank said, contact them via letter or phone and inform them that 1) you’re aware of how difficult the admissions season has been, 2) you’re happy to at least to have been considered and now hold a WL spot and 3) let them know that you will be putting a deposit down with another school but that you would CERTAINLY drop that if a waitlist offer were to come your way because they have always been your top choice.

Attract with honey and not vinegar. Good luck to you.

thanks for the advice bank and T26E4. i was just over reacting and not in a good mood at the time. there is still hope. i’ll definitely call each school and use your advice. thanks again

“I had a 92 average in one of the top public high schools in NY (graduating class over 1000) and a 1690 on SAT”

So… you’re a bad test taker? Hm, I suppose exams aren’t commonplace in your elite school given your Uber-high average.

Your stats are, at best, average. Don’t flatter yourself.

my test grades are always 90+, but for some reason it didnt matter how long or how many times i studied for this SAT, for some reason i couldnt improve by more than 20 points. i’m 100% sure that my SATs are the reason, but on the other hand there are kids with no ECs and a 85 avg with a 1100/1600 who got accepted to the same program i applied for. thats the main reason i feel this way

Perhaps you should have taken the ACT, because sometimes pretty good students who don’t do as well on the SAT test do far better on the ACT.

yea but its too late now to take ACT. i need to look forward and find a way to better my chances of acceptance while on the waiting list. besides sending them my mid year and calling is there anything else i can do?

see if you can do a shadow day/days at a pharmacy SOON! Maybe you can get a letter of rec. Send it and your own letter stating your goals and why ____ university is a perfect fit. I know these are not privates but can’t hurt.

DON’T call.
Write a letter and wait, calling and complaining is the surest way to get your application in the trash can.

honestly, you can’t be a moron and get a 2000 on the SAT, it really just doesn’t happen. they probably are just lazy and are probably in the same boat as you (a 70 average doesn’t look too hot.)

and btw - a 1690 at stony brook as a bio major is way under the average. they are doing some pretty sweet things there.

I’m surprised that you got waitlisted at UB. Did you apply late in the game? Don’t lose hope yet - these public schools are “financial safeties” for alot of kids and as FA packages are coming in now there will be people who decline their admission. My D is just sending in her first “no thanks” letters this week. Try to find out where you are on the waitlist. They may not give you an exact number but it would be helpful to know if you’re in the top third.

If you want to seal your rejection, by all means call and “complain.” The colleges that waitlisted you did nothing wrong. You have nothing to complain about. However, if you are serious about attending any of these schools, give them a call and tell them * as politely as you can muster* that you’re happy and appreciative they considered you qualified enough to be placed on the wait list and that you’re still extremely interested in attending the school.

Perhaps it was your essay? Read over it, maybe you misspelled a few too many words. Admissions can be very unpredictable. Did you hear about the adcom that rejected every single buffalo applicant a day after he got food poisoning eating at a buffalo restaurant? Yeah, it sucks pretty hard.
