I second whoever said Wuthering Heights...

*High Five..

I second whoever said Wuthering Heights...

*High Five..

Catcher in the Rye... I have to agree. I just read it over break, and I sped through the whole book in two days just so I could be done with it.

Wuthering Heights was the most miserable reading experience ever. I had the distinct impression that Bronte was trying to pile as much misery and wretchedness as possible on the characters (until the very end, of course), and I lost my taste for the book after the first 100 pages or so. I am never touching this book again.

I actually liked Pride & Prejudice. I like a lot of Austen's novels. And I LOVED Grendel. Best book I've ever read in school. Although Beowulf was terrible. It's such a pity that it survived (actually, there wouldn't be Grendel without Beowulf, so...).

The only Heathcliff I ever want to read about again is the cartoon cat...

=]

I find it hard to believe that *The Lord of the Rings *has only been mentioned a handful of times in this thread, especially considering how popular it has become because of the movie.

The Lord of the Rings is plain _________ (fill it up yourself) :D

what did you guys think about Lolita...i have mixed feelings about that book...repulsive....but...i guess the way its written is ...uhhhh..."nice"
any thoughts?

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

The Scarlet Letter sucked majorly.

I agree, theoneo, Things Fall Apart. Tried reading it twice but never finished it.

Animal Farm - Orwell
A Seperate Peace - Knowles
The Pearl - Steinbeck
Bean Trees - Kingsolver
Poisonwood Bible - Kingsolver
The Color Purple - Walker

I hated the scarlett letter...now that was a painful task to read. I adored To Kill a Mockingbird. Half the books you all named I absolutely love! I love any book by Dickins, especially Great Expectations. I did not fancy Oliver Twist too much though, but it was ok. Lord of the Flies has been my fave since we had to read it in 8th grade. I love Jane Eyre also. Oedipus Rex was fun to read too. Another good book is One flew over the cucukoo's nest, and the color purple. Those were my 2 pleasure reads this past summer.

Now on to my worse...
Huck Finn is a horrible book...
um The Pigman...
Odyssey, Illiad, Aeniad -thank god for spark notes...
Wuthering Heights...hard to get through
Animal Farm...weird
Silas Marner...boring as hell

Odyssey, Illiad, Aenid

There goes three of the greatest epics ever written... :(

I really hate the Narnia series. Is the scarlet letter that boring? I'm planning to read it. Is it a love story?

The Da Vinci code (Dan Brown)

Life of Pi (Whisname)

can we say OVER-RATED.

I'm sorry but i'm not into the whole greek mythology stories...

Also, Harry Potter stories are annoying

And Scarlett Letter wasn't so much a love story to me. You think it would be, but it's not. The woman, Hester, commits adultery, has a baby, and you soon find out who the father is in the story, and it's just a huge bore, and did not appeal to me at all. Especially since Nathaniel Hawthrone[sp?] has to describe every single detail thing in the book. That made it twice as boring. Did anyone catch the page and a half description of the rose bush?

I forgot to mention The Odyssey - what an unnecessary out-of-world experience.

You must be mistaking The Odyssey with some fantasy book. Homer is great.

:D

I love to see people trash all these over-hyped books that have somehow made their way onto high school reading lists.
Here are the books at the top of my most-hated list. There plenty of others I mildly dislike, but I won't include them here.

Da Vinci Code. So poorly written, I almost couldn't finish it.

Things Fall Apart. So boring, it HURTS.

Hamlet. Hamlet is a whiny loser.

Catcher in the Rye. Holden is yet another whiny loser.

A Prayer for Owen Meaney. I can't even begin to describe my loathing for this worthless piece of long-winded, meaningless garbage.

Heart of Darkness and P&P are good books, although I can see how some people would find their styles tedious.

DaVinci Code, Tess of the D'urbervilles (I ABHORED THIS BOOK), A Prayer for Owen Meany, and anything by Camus just because it's "absurd" (ha) and depressing.

I love Harry Potter.
I actually liked The Awakening!
Catcher in the Rye isn't bad, it's not very "mature" reading though.. though Harry Potter isn't much differnet as far as "sophisticated reading".. but Harry Potter is AWESOME.

I weep for the future of literature when Hamlet, Odyssey, Aenid, Iliad, and Huck Finn are commonly listed as "books that suck."

Let's not defend books here.

You guys already listed the worst books like Huckleberry Finn, Scarlett Letter, Jane Eyre, etc. Some more to add:

Song of Solomon
Crime and Punishment
The Jungle
My Antonia.
