Books That Suck

Well, I at least hoped the "worst" list would be like... I dunno... cheesy romance or mystery novels.

Some of these books are literary treasures! :(

Wow! I loved Hawthorne's imagery in The Scarlet Letter, but anyhoo :p. I also disliked Silas Marner, but maybe its because I tried reading it two years ago and understood nothing.

The worst books I have ever read have to be Where the Red Fern Grows and As I Lay Dying

I also hated "Where the Red Fern Grows". We read that in sixth grade...ugh...

After seeing some books that I truly liked going into the sucky pile I am a little saddened. Still, I know some crap that is really terrible. Turn to Lifetime and you will find this woman's work in some film adaptations. As if the channel wasn't sucky enough(my grandma is a Lifetime addict)!!! Pretty much any Danielle Steele novel falls into the sucky category...those are books that truly suck!!! lol

mcz, i liked that one lol. the one i hated was The Red Pony (5th grade)

wow.. elementary school books...the memories! Bridge to Terabithia, Sign of the Beaver (i still remeber the indian's name! 18! lol it was Aetean or something), Number the Stars, The Giver, etc. good times :D

i read bridge to terabithia, number the stars, night, sign of the beaver, the giver, star girl etc. in elementary/middle school...

i love reminiscing about the younger years.

the one i hated was the awakening

i think the book that has stayed with me for a long time has been johnny tremain in 4th grade, though i don't know why.

omg i read "my brother sam is dead" in like the 4th grade, and the war descriptions like permanently scarred me, especially when Sam died.

Things Fall Apart. But Sparknotes helped me.

I despise The Mill on the Floss.

The Giver was the best book EVER lol...I LOVED it...we read it in elementary school while I was in magnet and I still have the copy...Bridge to Terabithia and The Hatchet were good also...

why can't we read good books like those anymore??? sigh

haha bluthunder- my thoughts exactly

wow.. i need to go to bed
just finished up this huge US Hist paper (go me!)

The Mill on the Floss is one of my fave books... But Middlemarch was boring!

Other books that I don't like: Wuthering Heights (utterly boring), Mrs Dalloway (there was no point!), A Tale of Two Cities, Left Behind series.

sorry enilit, I just couldn't get into it...the funny thing is that my midterm exam is on The Mill on the Floss...lol

I never finished Bridge to Terabithia, just because I hated it so much.

The reason why so many "great" books land onto this list is that many readers have been exposed to them, many have had high expectations for them, and many are from a time period (Shakespeare, or dense Romantic-era) that is more removed from current styles.

A book will probably only come here if it's been widely read; that's why we have high-profile books on this list, not drivel, like the mass-produced paperback romance novels.

Snafu,

First off man, try to address a specific speaker. I think you're talking to me, but I can't be sure.

Secondly, you're right. It doesn't mean, however, that I'm not sad.

Catch 22. I can appreciate it, but it's just not for me.

Yeah, UCLAri, I was mostly addressing you, but it was a general comment also.
