Brown University...Again.

Hey CC,

So you're probably sick of seeing me around here, and I hope this is one of my last posts. I had applied to Brown University ED for the PLME but was deferred. Here are my updated stats, can anyone give some insight to this poor soul? I've submitted a letter of interest, a research abstract, and an additional recommendation from my supervisor at the local library recently. I'm also going to submit my midyear report when it comes out in February.

Class Rank: This hasn't come out yet. Before the update, I stood at 5/535. Since my GPA went up, I would like to assume it stayed the same or went up. I really don't have a definite answer for this until February.

Test Scores:

ACT: 33

Please be kind in your posts. No negativity :)

If I find out anything soon, I’ll post my class rank. For now, assume it’s in the top 1%. Thank you!

I say you’re chances are about 50/50 you could get in or not. Your stats seem on par but those ivies always reject students that are so highly qualified. I’d say apply to more places than just brown, but you have a fighting chance if your essay is/was really good and had some unique recommendations. can you chance me please?

“7. Captain of Bollywood Dance Team”

Ok that is pretty cool and unique.

“18. Bharatnatyam”

Looks like a keyboard threw up.

Bharatnatyam is a form of Indian classical dance lol. But thanks  I did apply to a couple of other places, i.e., UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, NC State, etc.

@mcknight95, can you post the link to your page? I can’t seem to find it -.-

I would say its 50/50 you seem like a unique student that would definitely add something to a college campus, and the fact that you got deferred is probably a good sign, but you never know what the admissions officers are thinking, so…

Chance me back please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1609588-chance-i-ll-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>

20% at best. 36’s routinely get rejected. A 33 is actually on the low-end.

You have a fighting chance. Write a really good essay. You have a chance good luck
<a href=“Chance Me? I will definately 100% chance you back - #33 by collegeman18 - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>Chance Me? I will definately 100% chance you back - #33 by collegeman18 - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums;

bump

I applied to Cornell, Columbia, and Harvard as well all RD

Guys btw I can’t write a “good essay” at the moment. The application was submitted early decision, back in November. I was deferred, like I said before. I believe my essay was good though, and it’s probably what kept me from getting rejected in the first place.

I would say with those stats yet you still got deferred means you must have had a major flaw in your application. Perhaps your ACT score is a little bit low for Brown standard (I maybe wrong).

SAT IIs?

Unlike some others, I believe that when you reach a certain level on your test scores, other things will come to light. In my opinion, after you clear the 33 threshold, you can pretty much have a chance anywhere, since you have shown academic strength. So I don’t have a problem with the ACT. I think the reason why you were deferred and not rejected is because they wanted to see how your first semester grades panned out. I was also deferred from my college, and when I talked to the adcom, he said that they defer when they are highly interested, but also want to see how you deal with all your courses in senior year. Typically (these are his own words), seniors take the most challenging classes in their senior year. When we defer, it is because we want to see how you cope with these courses, which resemble a college setting. He also strongly encouraged me to write them a letter of continued interest. The big message: YOU HAVE A SHOT  If your grades are excellent, you will be a very competitive applicant. Best of luck. Wish you the best.

Thanks everyone!

@Classof2018app, your advice gives me some confidence  I made straight A’s first semester of my senior year when I took AP Euro, AP Gov, AP English Lit, and AP Psych. I guess it’s a pretty challenging workload too, and my weighted GPA went up a lot in my opinion. Anyone else?

SAT II scores–

Biology M: 780
Math Level II: 800
French w/ Listening: 740

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT DETAIL WHICH I DID NOT INCLUDE ON MY EC LIST:

THE SWIM INSTRUCTION, ART INSTRUCTION, BOLLYWOOD DANCE TEAM, AND RESEARCH PROJECT ARE ALL SELF-INITIATED.

Wow, you’re an extremely qualified applicant. I guarantee you, wherever you end up going, you’re going to florish. That being said, brown is a top university, and as a fellow Indian, I do have to warn you that we are over represented in the top universites… I’d say 60-40 you get in to you don’t. Regardless, you’ll be fine!

Hey btw can you chance me back if you can? my thread is in the first page
