Brown University

princessbell- hey i'm pretty sure that u can't change ur course selection b/c i can vaguley remember it saying on the website/form to choose carefully because you can't change it...but i'm not 100% on that one.

It's a great program.

But, at the same time, some kids can't deal. I mean, the girl who lived across the hall from me ran away to be with some homeless guy she met. But they found her in the parking lot of the CVS on Thayer street like 2 days later.

mock09- thanks for telling me.

Locksleylady- I'm sorry. I reread my post and I realize it came off as sort of condescending. I suck. Can we be friends? :)

But, on a more serious note, I think you answered your questions yourself. Yeah, it's freaking easy to get into Brown's summer program, and yeah, a lot of people have mommy and daddy doling out thousands and don't care. But I think the people you found are just a minority, and that most people will be interested in doing their best. But your best bet is to find someone who's actually been (almost everyone on this board is a first-timer) and ask them your personal questions.

Good luck!

Hey mock-09 and princess bell I emailed the program before and this lady told me you can change your courses with no penalty

I changed my course recently to "Introduction to Game Theory." they Cancelled my original one (Philosophy of Law). All you have to do is email them about it.

has anyone taken the creative writing non fiction class?

How do you find out if your class was cancelled? It seems like some are "no longer accepting applications" because they were filled quickly, and others because they were cancelled.

anybody taking the following classes??

City /Spaces: An Introduction to Psychogeography
Literature in the Age of Globalization

princessbell- haha yes lets be friends. I overreacted before...but yeah I agree with you those people are just a minority, I think most people want to have fun but also want to take advantage of the fact they're at an Ivy League school!

And as for changing courses, there's a form on the Summer at Brown site you just have to fill out and mail/fax to them....it looks really simple actually......here's the link if anyone wants it:

http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Continuing_Studies/ap/ce/forms/coursechange.pdf

I have another question though for everyone that I recall reading something about but I'm not sure where-- is it advisable to bring a labtop? or are there enough computers available when we want/need them?

I'm trying to bribe my dad into buying me a mac...for all the "studying" I'm going to do at Brown of couse. So even though I'm sure there will be more than enough library computers availiable, this just looks to me like a golden opportunity to score some loot. After all, I need the best for the Ivy Leagues, right? :)

soo i went last year... for those of you wondering about partying and such, most of the kids that participate in the program are just not really into that. there were some international kids last year who had brought alcohol with them to brown, and they ended up getting caught and kicked out. i would be really careful and just not participate in that kind of stuff. i only know of one person who smoked weed... he never got caught... but really most of the kids just weren't into that. there are some random hookups, but most of them ended up as kind of relationships... they would only hook up with that one person again... there wasn't much sex (except for in the dorm hegeman d is what i've heard). a lot of us did go to the hookah bar, but that's about as crazy as most of the kids went. for the most part, the kids were really outgoing and laid back... they were really there for the academic experience... if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

hookah bar?
where is it?

princessbell: Good luck in your pursuit of a Mac. I'm trying to persuade my dad to let me take his old PowerBook.

Thanks hobbit. I've been looking at those refurbished things on the apple website, but they aren't much of a deal. On amazon, the lowest I've seen was $1000, which is good for a mac, but my dad's going overseas and my mom's stupid luxury car is draining all our money, so I don't know! Maybe if I can scrounge up $333, my dad will see my hard effort and front the other 2/3. You know how parents like that sort of thing.

Oh, boy, can't wait for summer and can't wait for Brown!

"hookah bar?
where is it?"

does anyone know?

lol I heard that it's on campus and it's organized by Brown undergrads and it's really popular....we'll probably all hear about it within our first couple days there.

Is it legal for us under-eighteens or what? We've got one near us, and kids at my school go there all the time, but the people who work there pretty much don't care unless you look 12.

Is anyone taking "How to Think the Calculus Way"? I'm afraid that I'm going to be the only one in the class...
