anothersuitcase, earlier you mentioned something about not knowing the exact formula for the selection. it's Unweighted GPA at the end of 7th semester times ACT (or SAT converted to ACT) score. For me, that works out to 140. What's yours? I wish we knew what earlier cutoffs were...

has anyone heard from byrd in florida?

have u checked FSFA under award status? On my S award status it has that he is elgible for the byrd and the amounts he would get each semester. Does that mean he recieved the award? He did recieve a phone call earlier in June but our phone battery was going dead and he didn't get to finish the conversation. He was asked what school he would be attending. Thanks. This is our first child in college.

St. Pete FL here, my daughter got her Byrd scholarship letter today in the mail, she got it! YAY!

ufmom,

I think your son is receiving the award. I also received a phone call asking what college I would be attending, and my letter that came in the mail today stated the exact same thing that you read on FSFA and urged me to contact my school ASAP to tell them so they could adjust my financial aid award.

So Congratulations!

anothersuitcase
My S did recieve the award! We got the letter yesterday. Congratulations to you too!

i got it too in fl! congrats to you all

Another FL that got it. St Lucie here. I just got a letter and an email asking me to fax them that ed cert form.

My d just got the letter this past week indicating that she is receiving the scholarship. I guess GA is the slowest of the states to get this awarded! We are certainly not complaining, however. Especially since I had been told (by someone on the phone at her HS) that she "didn't get it" back last spring. Obviously, the person to whom I was speaking was ill informed. I am glad!

My S received a Byrd scholarship last year. I called the office that administers the Michigan scholarships for some information and was told that there's talk in the legislature of discontinuing the scholarships. Has anyone else heard anything?

My daughter got it this year from GA, as well. I was told that they use grades all the way through graduation, so it takes an extra 6 weeks.

I wouldn't worry about the scholarship being discontinued unless/until Byrd loses. The feds are just pouring money out of Washington; they won't stop a scholarship that goes to the best and brightest in this political atmosphere. If they ever get serious about the deficit, maybe this one will go.

It says somewhere for washington state that you should be notifed by your counseling office, and to talk to them to see what the requirements are. So some of us probably won't hear about it untli we start school.

Wait are you guys incoming seniors, or have you already graduated?

The previous messages are graduates. The scholarships are typically awarded late in the senior year through the middle of summer.

I'd check with the counseling office early this year and find out how your state decides. In ours, a single student is nominated from each school and then the highest GPA, SAT/ACT, letters and essay gets it. The trick, in our state, is to be nominated in the first place. Polite persistence with the counselors might be useful...

I received my scholarship check yesterday in Nebraska so I guess the program still has enough funds for this year. I think I'll write a nice letter to Sen. Byrd thanking him for the hard work he does helping students pay for college. In Nebraska we're eligible to continue receiving funds for four years so I hope he can keep the program going.

In Nebraska the state is divided into districts and the person with the highest ACT score in each district wins, GPAs are tie-breakers. You have to apply, but the form is really easy since it's just filling in numbers and sending a transcript. Winners are announced in late April.
