CALTECH YESS Summer Program 2010

Congratulations on your acceptance!

@TQSMNTASP
CONGRATULATIONS? What were your qualifications? Are you under-represented minority.
Good job and enjoy your summer at CALTECH. It is lovely out there.

You’re most welcome, Paranoid Parent. Not all schools offer the AMC, which is unfortunate since it is another test score kids can “tout” if they do well on it.

And congratulations, TQSMNTASP.

Actually it has a good deal to do with being an urm it states this on the YESS website under admissions eligibility. But we applied anyway so I can’t complain!

@TQSMNTASP
Congratulation.

Could you give us your stats?
I am wondering how they choose kids.
Is it better to have more challenging classes or to have more extra activities (volunteer work, pay job)?

My son got his acceptance letter today. Who knows how they made the selection? Only 30 out of 1500–! He was apparently rejected from the Welch Summer Scholars program (still haven’t officially heard anything, but it doesn’t look good), still waiting on the MITES letter.

Attended Math/Science Texas Governor’s School last summer

No one should feel bad about not being accepted. You all sound wonderfully gifted, and I think you will get into any college you want.

Rejected :slight_smile:
I didn’t even finish the application.

I got in. I am a sophomore. Very excited.

Congratulations Beyond!

@BioEng2011…I got accepted and I participate in Teen Court too! Maybe that is the trick for YESS ; )

@BioEng2011,

My daughter will be attending TGS at UNT this summer for Math/Science…what did you think about the program? How many students normally apply for the TGS, it does not seem as competitive as some of the other programs. I’m wondering if it will hold any weight when she applies to other colleges???

My son was rejected for MITES. Oh well, YESS was his first choice anyway!

ladycoriace,

I am not very informed about the selectivity of the Texas Governor’s School in Math/Science. It’s one of the few camps for rising juniors–most are for rising seniors. I do recall there were some extra slots that seemed to open up kind of at the last minute–maybe some acceptees decided to go to other programs?

Your child should definitely apply! My son had a blast and he actually learned some stuff too. There is not much hands-on research, but they were exposed to different kinds of science and engineering. For example, he got to meet a top nanotechnology researcher from one of the UT system schools, and it really sparked his interest in that area and bioengineering in general. I don’t think he previously had any idea what bioengineering was. He also met some really great kids from all over the state, some of whom he still stays in touch with.

And TQSMNTASP,

Yeah, it’s gotta be the Teen Court!! :)

WOOOT i got accepted im so excited!!

i had 4.2
