Can I get into any of the following engineering programs???

I am currently applying to ten schools for the major of Aerospace engineering and I’m not sure if my stats are up to par with any of these universities.
GPA: 2.91 weighted
SAT: 1300 (600 EWR 700 MATH) 6,7,7 Essay
IB diploma candidate
3 extracurricular clubs (one officer position)
Financial assistant job
I am applying tho the following schools: Auburn, Purdue, CU Boulder, Vtech(my only in-state), SUNY Buffalo, University of Cincinnati, Texas A&M, Wichita State, Iowa State, and Penn State.
I’m Applying early action for 7 of my schools so I hope that raises my chances a bit but I’m just worried about my GPA dragging down my chances, what do you think?

Can you afford full pay at OOS schools?
What is your UW gpa? Why is your GPA in the 2s? Have you looked at local CCs with articulation agreements?

Iowa State just uses your RAI score and will almost immediately accept or deny when you apply. You can calculate it yourself using the formula here.

https://www.admissions.iastate.edu/freshman/requirements.php

It is very unlikely you will get into Virginia Tech instate. You could start at community college and potentially get in later via articulation agreements if you do well in your community college courses. ODU instate has a mechanical and aerospace department.

I am able to pay full for all of my OOS schools and am receiving no financial aid. My school doesn’t report unweighted and I was being a dumb rebellious teen after my mom passed away and it messed up my grades. Thanks for the reply!!

An aspiring engineering student should be able to do the very basic math problem of calculating the unweighted GPA from the high school record.

Your list looks like a bunch of well chosen matches for your SAT, however your GPA is low for an aspiring engineer.

I think sevmon suggestion of another college get your GPA up and transfer could be the right path. A high GPA could open up the next higher couple of tiers of programs to you.

Purdue would be a big reach. GPA matters a lot.

“Students admitted to the College of Engineering for Fall 2017 had an average combined SAT in the middle 50% range of 1350-1470. Of the students that enrolled, 50% had a GPA between a 3.94-4.0, and an ACT Composite of 30-34.” - https://www.purdue.edu/futureengineers/What%20To%20Know/Common%20Questions/Frequently%20Asked%20Questions.html

We’ve been told the test scores ranges are creeping up every year so it’s even more competitive now.

What about WVU or Western Michigan?

For CU Boulder school of engineering you will need almost straight As with your SAT. They might offer you pre-engineering, but be aware that few (25%) make it into engineering from there.

I can say that you should be able to get into Wichita State. TX A&M would be doubtful, Iowa State a reach.

Surprising that the forum favorite UAH has not been mentioned by any of its usual boosters… https://www.uah.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply-for-admission/freshmen says that “An applicant with a grade point average of 2.9 and a composite score of 20 on the ACT or an equivalent SAT score, for example, is considered a strong candidate for admission.”

UAH’s neighbor AAMU says at https://www.aamu.edu/admissions-aid/undergraduate-admissions/incoming-freshman-students.html that “to be fully accepted into Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, one must have a Composite Predictive Index (CPI) score of 18 or higher. The CPI score is a combination of the high school grade point average (GPA) and ACT/SAT scores. The GPA, however, cannot be lower than a 2.0” (calculation of the CPI is given at https://www.aamu.edu/admissions-aid/financial-aid/scholarships/normalite-opportunity-scholarship.html ).

Both UAH and AAMU offer mechanical engineering with aerospace electives, and are near NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and Army Redstone Arsenal.

However, at any college, you need to have a stronger commitment to academics than what got you a 2.whatever GPA in high school, if you want to succeed in an engineering program, or any college major.

OP would be an auto-admit at Iowa State with that SAT and GPA as long as there were at least 15 core courses completed in high school.

Mickel102,
I am sorry about your loss of your mother. She is very pleased that you have matured and are now trying your best. Good luck.

A&M may offer you a pathway option, so make sure you really explore your local options first before looking at community college in Texas.

What are your IBD courses?
Your dad is going to pay 200K for OOS uni? That is written in stone?

Yeah my dad is able and already is expecting to pay OOS and it doesn’t bother him. I’m just hoping my easier schools will accept me like Auburn and the recently added WVU

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ve just added them to my list. Let’s hope I get in.

Thanks for the clarification because I didn’t think Iowa State would be such a reach.

Thank you so much, it means a lot to hear that.
