When you go off to school shop for some non obnoxious brands like BB and RL. You aren’t a kid anymore. Those AE shorts that were posted make me want to vomit.

Once you hit the scene in the college world it’s time to get serious with your wardrobe. You want your professors and interviewers to take you seriously. Then at your last years of college (if you haven’t already) it’s time to invest in some shirts (white, off-white, yellows, shades of blue, and if you want to get fancy add some conservative checks and strips), different colored pants, and a two-buttoned interview suit that’s either gray or navy with strips being optional (don’t wear a black suit to the interview). When you’re on your off time you can wear casual clothes like t shirts and chino/khaki shorts.

@gogreek: That’s the dumbest post I’ve read on CC. Have you even ever set foot on an actual college campus in your life?! lol, if you had, you’d know that 90% of college students wear a hoodie and jeans/sweat-pants to class. No one dresses up on weekdays, and you see guys wearing cargo shorts everywhere, especially Stanford.

It’s true however that you go out more regularly, and have more semi-formal events during college, so it’s always best to upgrade your wardrobe a bit before college. But, for god’s sake, ignore this gogreek’s advice regarding casual wear. lol he has no idea what he’s talking about.

P.s: visit Princeton, Stanford, Oxford, and see for yourself.

They’re unattractive and make you appear less clean cut. Plus what’s the use for all of those pockets? Sure, wear your cargo shorts…but unless you’re fishing or 12 years old, don’t expect any kind of positive attention from the opposite sex.

Being at a college prep school for four years, I am more in the issue of downgrading my wardrobe from shirts, ties, and khakis to normal attire, hence this post on what is acceptable.

@princetondreams have you ever set foot on a college campus? Most people don’t wear sweats and hoodies. At least not people go care about their image. Cargo shorts are just ugly and should not be worn unless you have a very important need for the pockets (ie carrying your v-card or broken dreams).

Despite what your name and profile says I’m going to go ahead an assume that you don’t go to a good school because your comprehension skills are below par to get accepted at such schools. So I’m going to dumb it down for you so that you and anyone else of the same caliber on here can understand what I wrote. There are kids at college who do wear hoodies, jeans, and sweatpants I won’t deny that.

If you are going to be interviewing or holding any special positions so that you are working for professors or with your peers you are going to want to look professional which is why I said you need to upgrade your wardrobe. If you don’t have anything like this at your school then that could be why my information was over your head. I’ll give you an example:

At my school I am a Fund Manager for our student-managed investment fund. I along with the rest of the Fund Managers are always in shirt and slacks because that is the excepted attire in the business school and club. If you are going to give kids millions of dollars to invest you want to give it to the guys that look professional and not to the cargo short, flat brim, and ugly obnoxiously over sized logoed tshirt wearing kid. Also my fraternity has formal occasions where we wear the proper attire for that occasion. When I’m not in club meetings and around campus you can catch me wearing tshirts, shorts, or jeans like the rest of the student body.

If this post doesn’t help at all let me know.

I see NOTHING wrong with cargo shorts. No one will ever say to wear them to an interview, but for going to class and hanging out, they are perfectly fine. I think they look good too (but I’m admittedly utilitarian about clothing).

Looks down at cargo shorts
Hmmm… there is nothing wrong with them and their really convenient. No professor except an incredibly pretentious one would care or even notice what you are wearing as long as its reasonable for the occasion. That said, cargo shorts are out apparently out of fashion right now, so it’s good to mix up the wardrobe a bit if you own nothing but cargo pants.

Yeah, because all decisions to invest millions of dollars are based solely on appearance. No one ever cares about such things as you know, competence. Nah, that wouldn’t be cool.

Some people on here seem to be overly concerned with how they and others dress. Most college classes are an informal environment and it really shouldn’t matter. There are exceptions of course, such as if you’re a multi-million dollar student fund manager. In that case, you do need to be in a suit much of the time and have that handshake and biz card ready to go.

We are vain for stating a clothing preference when someone asks? Cargo shorts simply aren’t “in” right now for most college students. plus, since when are khakis dress up clothing?

Is your professor going to have an appearance grade? I don’t think so. You should wear whatever makes you feel comfortable so you can concentrate on what you are there for, getting an education.

buy your cargo shorts! i have no idea what these people are talking about. who are they to reach this consensus that cargo shorts should be banned? i’m a fashion-conscious girl and i like them on guys. to me, they look cute.
