Cargo Shorts...Why all the hate?

There’s nothing wrong with cargo shorts. I wouldn’t wear them on the day of an interview or something, but you shouldn’t be wearing shorts for that anyways.

I usually wear khaki shorts just because they are cheaper.

I guess I am extremely trashy.

I wear basketball shorts and cargo shorts the majority of the time.
and in the winter and spring I am always wearing a sweater. sigh

I have zero problem with cargo shorts. I have many friends who wear them (including my boyfriend), and they honestly use the pockets. My boyfriend likes to carry a lot of things around with him in his pockets, namely his wallet, cell phone, a pen, a small notepad, flash drive, and a comb. He uses all of these things on a consistent basis, and it’s not like he’s going to carry a purse.

Also, to the person on the first page, I love printed tees and neon shoes. I’m a girl, and that’s pretty much what I wear everyday. :stuck_out_tongue: This is coming from a low-maintenance girl, so take it as you will, but I think that a girl who won’t date you because you wear cargo shorts is best avoided anyway.

There’s no need to be in a hurry to grow up and be professional as a college student. If you’re intelligent and hardworking, your professors will notice you regardless. I have an eyebrow piercing, and I wear the aforementioned printed tees and neon shoes, and I am a research assistant for a professor who is on the older side. Another one of his RAs has bright pink and purple streaks in her hair, facial piercings, and a wrist tattoo. Obviously appearance did not factor into his choice of RAs. He chose people who were qualified and intelligent. (He also complimented the shoes. He said they made him smile. :D)

Aside from that, even though I apparently don’t make the cut by CC standards, I also got a teaching assistant position next semester for psych 101, and I got a resident assistant job for next year. I wore my piercing to my interview. Although it may be pragmatic to try to adjust your appearance in some circumstances, and I won’t say that people don’t judge, but honestly it hasn’t held me back any. Buy the darn shorts if you like them. :)

I wore cargo shorts and a t-shirt to my interview for the internship which I am currently working at. Granted, I would have dressed up if I could, but that day was crazy.

Of course appearance matters, but content matters more.

And for casual wear? Wear whatever you want! People you pass on campus who are going to judge you for wearing cargo shorts are probably not people you’d want to associate with anyways.

I’m of the opinion that just because you can get away with it, doesn’t mean that you should.

Yes, you may go to class or shopping in a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, but it’d be nicer if you had a little upgrade. Dressing up even slightly for class shows respect for both your classmates and professor. Similarly, doing so when shopping shows respect for others who are also shopping at the same place.

You say that competence / what goes on beneath is what really matters, but I’ll just have this to say: if I am going to invest a million dollars in you and you don’t have the sense to go above jeans/t-shirt (even when you could of), that’s an act of incompetency in itself.

If you’re wondering why there are so many competent geeks who get stuck with lousy jobs and can’t find a date, this is part of the issue.

Are the people saying no to cargo shorts envisioning the tacky rip stop nylon type material cargo shorts, or regular cotton fabric cargo shorts? The former I could see being criticized, but the latter, id say on my campus on a given day 25% of guys would be wearing those shorts. They were pretty ubiquitous. Never heard anyone say negative things about them.

@ excelblue, you think the stereotypical reason a GEEK cant get a date is because of their clothing? why not lack of personality/confidence/social skills?

People keep bringing up the unprofessionalism of cargos. No one should be wearing cargo shorts to a professional setting. End of. However, unless you are from the south, (or other really really preppy school) class isnt a professional setting.

Okay, this is COLLEGE we’re talking about. Students almost everywhere roll out of bed practically in their pajamas/sweatpants to go to class in the morning. NO ONE is going to judge you for how casual you look when you go to class. You know you wouldn’t wear cargo shorts (or anything with the same level of informality) to an interview or church. But that doesn’t mean you can’t wear them on a normal basis. They are not unattractive/ugly, as many people seem to believe, at all. I know perfectly respectable guys who wear cargo shorts in a casual setting.

Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I personally find cargos ugly and unattractive. In fact, I’d rather wear athletic shorts than cargos. And yes, I am of the camp that believes that going to class somewhat well-dressed is a sign of respect towards your classmates and professor. I also find it helps me “get in the zone”, because I went to a HS with a dress code, and so when I’m dressed a little more professionally, I know it’s time to learn. I’m not talking buttondown and dress pants every day, but a polo and khakis or something like that. And yes I wear t-shirts to class sometimes, but definitely not all the time.

You just don’t need to carry that much stuff where cargos are necessary. If you do, you need a backpack, not extra pockets on your shorts.

Can guys who are married, in grad school, and in their late 20’s still wear cargo shorts? I’m stunned to see this thread considering how much use I get out of my abercrombie cargo shorts. In fact, I don’t think I own any other shorts.

Nobody cares. If you go to class naked, yeah that’s disrespectful, but nobody’s going to judge you for the clothes you wear. The professor’s not going to care if you’re wearing Brooks Brothers or Ralph Lauren, and a classmate isn’t going to point that out and say “Hey we shop at the same place, lets be friends.” A nice, genuine, open-minded person would not judge somebody for the clothes they wear.

Your statement is relevant for an interview-like atmosphere, but nobody cares what you wear to class. They are paying attention to the lecture, not your taste in clothes.

I agree with liv4physicz…people roll out of bed and go to class in their pajamas. Of course you wouldn’t wear cargo shorts in a professional setting, but to class or just around campus I think it’s fine. People don’t need to dress “professionally” 24/7.

People make SUCH a big deal out of clothes on here. If you like something, wear it and don’t worry about what other people say about it. If you want to wear Hollister or cargo shorts or t-shirts…wear it.

I also agree with Hawkwings…the people who are going to judge you for wearing cargo shorts are probably not the type of people you want to associate with.

Wow, I always thought gogreek was a complete tool and idiot but if he is managing million dollar investments at the age of 21 then I must be wrong.

He is right about the cargos though. If you don’t care what people think then wear them. Wear a skirt or pajamas to class then I don’t care. But if you want to look your best then ditch them and get khaki shorts.

They aren’t more expensive. They aren’t more of a burden to wear. They are pretty much cargos with less pockets. Do you really need the 5 extra gigantic pockets?

I like cargo skinnies
But I AM a girl.

Defenders of cargos, did you also write this letter?

[The Daily Tar Heel :: South unfairly targets wearers of cargo short](http://www.dailytarheel.com/index.php/article/2011/06/south_unfairly_targets_wearers_of_cargo_short)

Oh, I get it. It’s like a regional or cultural thing. In the South, maybe wearing cargo shorts is shunned.

It’s totally cool where I’ve lived.

By the way, I posted that link in jest. ;)

I found that article quite amusing…then again I don’t think I ever saw cargo pants when I was in SC…so maybe there is some slight truth to it.

I swear everybody wears them here, and for a while they were hard to find and people were upset! Maybe it is a regional thing.

When I took my boyfriend shorts shopping I had him try on some of the regular khaki shorts and I didn’t like them on him. He looked like he was going to go play golf, and they looked too formal with the t shirts he usually wears for casual dress. He looked better in the cargo shorts-- not chintzy ripped AE ones, of course. Just for casual wear I don’t see what the big deal is. That’s what pretty much all the boys his age around here wear. The slobs walk around in athletic shorts.

I am trying to get khakis, the problem is I can’t find any the same length (11inch inseam). I actually like the khakis better, I just can’t find any. Got any suggestions for places/ sites?

I’m pretty sure AE has longer length flat front khakis.
