I recognize there are certain glaring weaknesses in my application. I realize I lack individual awards. I also realize that the fact that I don't have any research or olympiad medals may put me at a disadvantage, since I'm applying as an intended science major. I also realize the fact that I'm Asian (east Indian) may hurt me; however, as a semi-proponent of affirmative action, I'm not too upset about that. I also realize that my state is overrepresented. I just hope all of the above factors and whatever weaknesses you may see will add up to multiple rejections from all of these top schools.

bump bump bump

You’re a solid candidate. WUSTL seems to be your best bet out of these, unless it decides to waitlist you. If you write good, creative essays, UChicago will take you in (which is not to say it’s anything less than a reach for you, or for anyone else–it’s just that UChi really cares about the essay/personal fit). The rest are unpredictable, but again, if your essays are good, who knows?

Make sure your essays stand out because they will be the deciding factor.

I am an Asian male and I applied to most of the colleges on your list last year.

My stat and results:
SAT I 2380 (800-780-800 12) single sitting
SAT II 800-800-780
ACT 35 single sitting
UWGPA: 3.96 from extremely rigorous course load
HS: Extremely competitive
FA: Yes
State: Midwest
Honors: AP Scholar, NMF, AIME (no USAMO), many individual (regional) math awards, community service award
ECs: 2 very unique ECs and very non-Asian ECs (no tennis, no violin….)
Intended Major: Poli Sci/ Econ

Result:
HYPS and Columbia: Rejected
Wash U, Penn, JHU: Waitlisted
Accepted: NW and Chicago (and 5 more top 20 colleges)

Chances:
Chicago: Depends on your essay
NW: Good chances
JHU: Good chances but hard to tell
Wash U: I think you will be waitlisted. Wash U waitlisted every single high stat kids from my HS.
HYPS and other Ivies: I don’t want to chance you because you are an Asian male from NJ.

Apply to more colleges: I have a friend (with similar stat as yours and ASIAN MALE) who got rejected from every single selective college.

Apply to some Asian friendly colleges: Vanderbilt, Middlebury, Carleton…

Work on your essays!!!

Good luck to you!

bump bump bump

^lol why did you bump for me. thanks though, at lesat you got me more views.

HYPSM - high reach for everyone
columbia - reach
penn - reach
northwestern - match
u chicago - in
hopkins - low reach
idk about WUSTL (in terms of the school itself)

HYPSM: reaches (but you’ll likely get into at least one)
Columbia: low reach
Penn: low reach
Chicago: low reach
NU: high match
Hopkins: match

WUSTL: match

I would say everything is a match but Penn. I think it will be close

^ chanceme, in the spirit of your username, can you please chanceme? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1188548

HYPSM-reach. a friend of mine had a slightly better resume (36 ACT, 1st in class, nmsqt semifinalist, lots of sports/extracurrics) and only got deferred at MIT (he did get a waitlisted at CIT though)
Colombia/U Penn-reach
U Chicago-solid chance
northwestern-solid chance
Hopkins-not really sure
WUSTL-sure thing (my friend got a full ride including a nice stipend, although he went for engineering so a little different)

I would say you have a very high chance of getting into these schools except for HYPSM. However, beware that all of their admissions are very unpredictable, especially if you are an asian male -___-.

Anyway, good luck =)

HYPSM: reaches (for everybody), likely that you’ll get accepted to a few
Columbia: Mid Reach
Penn: Low Reach
Chicago: Good Chance
Hopkins: Most likely in
NU: Probably in as well
WUSTL: Low reach

Hey, thanks for the chance!
I looked at the previous posts on this thread and I noticed the decisive discriminatory remarks… as if your ethnicity and location somehow annihilate your chances.

Though I am a biased opinion in that regard, I feel that you have the scores, grades, and extracurriculars to get into all of the above schools. Nonetheless, HYPSM and Columbia and Penn are mostly crap-shoots. You have the potential, now you need the luck. I wish you the best, and I’m sure you will get into atleast 1 of your reaches and match with Hopkins, Chicago, NU, and WUSTL.
Thanks for chancing me!

Asian Male from NJ demographic will probably lead you to be judged at a higher standard. Academics are good enough for the schools you want to go to. And as such, intending to go for a science-related major without major accomplishments will be difficult. HYPSM, Columbia and U Penn are pretty high reaches. Better chances at the others. For schools like HYPSM, you either have to be very academically talented (the path most asians take), have a hook, or have unique interests along wih good essays.

bump bump bump

bump bump bump

This is about as good as this part of the application can get. There are some weaknesses as listed above, but most other applicants, from what I’ve seen, either have resum

I’m not too good at evaluating things like this but from your stats, I think you’re solid for all of your choices (assuming that your essay is stellar)
