Decision: Deferred (on December 7th)
ACT: was 29, raised it to 30 in February
GPA: 3.54/3.6 UW, with a 3.83 UW first semester (sent my grades in)
Lots of community service, some sports, lots of clubs, pretty well-rounded, sister goes to Michigan.
Essays all were very relevant, good recommendations.
Sent a letter of intent and an extra letter of recommendation to Michigan.
Very clear that Michigan is my top choice.

Stats not really on the high end of the OOS stats I have seen on the accepted thread , but if you are OOS and able to PAY full tution and they get a lot of OOS rejections due to the disappointing fin aid packages…then you might have a chance…just a guess! Good luck.

I’m in-state, and go to arguably the best private school in the state if not Midwest.

ehhh, what school do you go to? From my school, people with stats like yours usually get accepted

DCD? 10 char

Yeah DCDS. I know a lot of public school kids who have gotten accepted with lower stats than mine, my school is just so competitive that half of the kids got deferred this year, even very smart kids. And what does 10 char mean?

Just curious, which county or town is your school in? When did you apply? That could be the reason for your defferal if it didn’t meet the EA deadline.

My school is in Oakland County, Beverly Hills. I applied Early Response, submitted my application on October 23rd. I had everything in on time.

10char is what some sites put a minimum required number of letters to prevent botting and spam. People just put “10char” right after a really short answer just for fun.

LOL if you go to DCDS and applied early, you should get in. Its very ironic that you say that half the student body got deferred at your school. How many AP/honors courses did you take? Course rigor is very important in decision making.

They are also looking for leadership positions within all those EC’s lots of kids list they are members but only a few are the organizers and leaders of the club. Did you have any major related experiences during your school year/summer months etc. Did you have a job during school etc, etc. It is just not about the GPA and if you read U Mich stats the average upper ACT score is 32. Also you need to have that diversity hook that Mich is always looking for to round out their applicant pool. You know…single parent, urm, large family, first generation college student, rebound from hardship circumstances etc. etc. Any of the above fit??

littlefalls, I am applying as a transfer to UMich and a couple of those circumstances you listed fit me perfectly. I have a single parent with 4 siblings (5 kids including me) I am a first generation college student, and work 2 jobs while maintaining a 3.9. What in the essays would UMich want to know about those diverse qualities? and does the need for fin aid decrease your aceptance chances?

EC’s: Main one is being the Co-President of my community’s coalition which is relatively well-known. Spanish Club VP, SADD Club, Photography Club. Varsity Cheer 2 years, Volleyball (JV and Freshman team) 2 years. Lots of community service.
AP’s: Psychology (5), and Biology and Spanish 5 this year. 6 additional honors courses throughout high school, would have taken more if DCDS wasn’t so diffcult, lol.
They are beginning to defer so many people because of the insane competition. So many students with 4.0’s and 35s. 4 students have already gotten into MIT out of about 150.
Only diversity hook would be being Middle Eastern, which isn’t much of a hook at all.

3 AP classes? Out of how many? DCDS probably offers a lot, and thats probably why you got deferred, course rigor isn’t strong enough. Just keep waiting and hope for the best.

I don’t even know how many lol a lot. But, they’re very difficult at DCDS and the kids who take like 5/6+ aim for much higher universities. But I still agree with you, although kids with less rigor than me from my school have gotten in. Biology and Spanish are extremely hard AP’s at my school

I still had honors courses though

tomolambert7: I think your circumstances will help your fin aid chances!! Also one of the essay questions this year was about how you had a set back in your life and how it changed your life and provided you with valuable life lessons. Use your unique differences to answer this question with true passion. Good luck!

ferzouki: If you attended the most rigourous and most prestigious private high school in Michigan…than why is your ACT 29 and 30, not bad but not in the upper range. They may have expected a higher score…what are the scores of those that got accepted to Michigan from your HS. That may be your answer since your other stats are good! Also collegeboundguy has a very good point regarding the AP’s…my s has taken 10…they also help prepare you for the ACT and SAT. 3 is just not that many compared to the other accepted stats I have read about on CC. If you read about what Mich is looking for number one on the list is RIGOR of schedule. Still good luck…you just never know.

I don’t want to be blunt but this probably explains your deferral. Compared to your fellow classmates, you took 3 while they took 5 or 6. Anyways, I want to stress that your not rejected, so just keep waiting.

Kids at my school got accepted with 28+ ACT’s and 1 or 2 AP courses. I do wish I got a higher score on my ACT than a 30 because I probably could have if I prepped at all, which I did not. Not everyone that goes to DCDS gets a high test score. I have the highest score from my group of friends, I’d say the average at my school is around a 27, maybe 28.

I’m not saying I shouldn’t have been deferred, I just think the competition at my school makes it harder for qualified students to get accepted right away.

Where do you rank in terms of your graduating class, formally or informally? UMich appears to consider this, eg. accepts applicants from the top of their respective pools.Eg. my son was at a well-regarded magnet program and I think UMich accepted about the top 10-15% of the class that had applied, but even though it is a top ranked school I’ve seen some deferred or ultimately not accepted. One could argue that b/c the school is stronger ALL the kids should (in theory) have a better chance than another school, but UMich seems to consider from the perspective of “How well did this student do in a resource-rich environment? How much does this student stand out from their peers?”
An adcom once commented to me, before son was accepted, that kids from his school had the advantage of a very strong program, and that when evaluated, it would be in terms of how WELL they took advantage of it. That in essence, the expectation was greater because of the program.

Your stats sound highly admissible from a strong program, so this is the only dimension to my mind that could be influencing the deferral.
Good luck.
