Paulus89 you are truly ignorant

Wow, I agree with young cub. Paulus89, you know nothing about Bjerrio's stats and yet you stated that this person automatically doesn't deserve acceptance to UVA. Going by this statement, it seems as though you are not only against affirmative action but you are also against black people attending college at all. And people state that racism does not exist in this country anymore...

This thread was about someone's chances of getting into a few colleges, and like other threads, it has sprung into a discussion about affirmative action. This happens every single time in CC. Handskillz has stats to get into those colleges, his stats are probably in the 25% range, but nonetheless, he is qualified. Plus, another reason why I, and probably other people also, said he'd be almost a lock is not because of his skin color. He has faced a great deal of adversity that many students, regardless of race, would not be able to rebound from.

Affirmative action is racism in action. Colleges shouldn't ask for race at all on the applications.

Wow...

I can't imagine what you've had to go through.

Was this a reason for the slightly low GPA? If so, let the admissions committee know of this.

I think you have a good chance at all the schools you applied to, with merit money at a good number of them.

Paulus89 ,

You obviously don't know what "my qualifications" are. Don't assume that just because I'm Black that I have a low SAT score, and a low GPA. You have been watching too much t.v.

I don't know what they are but I absolutely know that your blackness definitely gave your application more weight than say, others with identical qualifications who were white.

This is retarded....

Geez, we are here to discuss one's chances of being admitted and how he can improve his chances...

For goodness sakes, drop the AA stuff already. Soon as one URM makes a chance thread, it gets jacked by te anti-AAers...enough of this, please.

isn't it coincidental that you yourself are black.

^^^^^

So what? The bottom line is...his thread got jacked, for no reason whatsoever.

Paulus89 ,

This is the last thing I'm going to say, and then, I'm going to rest the issue. Stop sending me private messages about how much you hate AA. Really it was my fault, to engage a loser like yourself in a conversation. And Lastly, I can't help it if I'm Black AND smart. I know it's a crazy concept, but there are Blacks out there who are overqualified. Ok, that's all I'm going to say about this issue.

i dont have a 2 gpa or 1000 sat....

Paulus:

"It's not based on motivation, it's based on SKIN COLOR. Bjerrio, a white student with your qualifications would not have gotten in."

Stats are NO WHERE NEAR the only factor in admissions. Lemme give you an example. My friend is Hispanic, with a 1330 SAT who got into Yale. Your probably thinking, "That guy is just lucky because he's a beaner." First off, he is not a good standardized test taker (Yes it is a skill. Why else would people with Calculus or higher math credit score lower than people who only made it to Algebra 2?). He did exceptional on the AMC test (115), yet he only had a 720 math. He was state debate champion, Computer science district champ, and much more.
Also, his interview went exceptionally well.

So before you run your stupid and racist mouth off again. Take this into account. The reason why many "qualified" whites and asians get rejected is because THEY ARE ALL THE DAMN SAME. Colleges don't want 80% of their undergrad students to consist of 2400 SAT Asians who play violin and excel in math and science, nor do they want whites who excel in all the same areas.

The ONLY reasons minorities get into college more easily is because

-There are MUCH fewer applying
-Thus they are fewer "clones"

As for the lower scores. Notice how WHITE PEOPLE often go to BETTER SCHOOLS (This of course is not always the case). If you know anything, you should understand that better schools lead to higher SAT scores. At my school, my counsler COULDN'T EVEN SPELL PRINCETON! She didn't know what an SAT II was either and has not spoken to me about financial aid once. White people often have advantages, which lead to higher scores, or credentials as you see it.

One more thing, the SAT does not show intelligence or quality of student. If the test was less speed and more knowledge then maybe it would, but as it stands now basic geometry(took it in 8th grade...), pointless passages with obscure and often undesireable words (who the hell would use omnifarious over different), and some obscure grammar rules are what stand between a student and a 2400.

I myself am not a good test taker.

My SAT is mediocre (2050 with 760Math)
My SAT II's are decent (780 Math iic, 750 chem)
My rank is good 13/458

AP Comp Sci 3 (our teacher didn't know Java, self-taught 2 weeks before the exam), AP Chem 5. Both as a Sophomore.

Seven on IB biology. (Wayy harder than AP tests)

My EC's probably set me apart. I focus heavily on the arts, while doing extensive tutoring, learning new languages, and doing well in math/science competitions.

-Aikido
-Tae Kwon Do (Many sparring/form first place awards)
-Capoeira
-Kung Fu Praying Mantis Form
-20 or more tutoring hours per month
-Cooking
-Learning German, Latin, Japanese. Got credit for Latin through testing.
-UIL: Computer Science (1st district team), Math, Science, Number Sense, Calculator, and Team Chem (I placed 1st in district WITHOUT a partner).
-Visual Arts
-Build Computers
-Stock Market (Just got 150% yield on my latest stock PKZ =P )
-With other stuff too.

Your counselors ability to spell shouldn't affect YOUR ability to take a standardized test. Stop whining.

Nope, but the fact that I have not had a competent counsler is definitely negative. Try researching scholarships, college requirements, etc on your own. Also, the bad counsling reflects the teaching as well. South Texas does not have amazing teachers. I have had 90+ in every English class, but only get a 650 Reading. That is not right, but it is not my fault now is it? I was not whining either.

I do research scholarships and college requirements on my own :)

Let's get back on topic. The OP never asked for chances at ivies or a debate on Affirmative Action. If diversity at universities makes you that upset, start a thread about it elsewhere. Its only fair.

To handskillz: I think you have an excellent chance at all the schools you listed. Just make sure that you make a detailed application and include the info about your mother and aunt. Good luck!

then good, but the point is that school quality affects stats. Minorities tend to go to cheaper schools and as a result they have a disadvantage.

I respectfully disagree - it's what YOU make of it - and that's that.
