chances??

stats:
current freshmen in UW-madison
1st semester GPA: 3.9
TOEFL: 283
(weird how my SAT scores arent required)
canadian citizen (ontario) who went to high school in hk who entered UW-madison last year
does anyone know if they need my GPA in the 2nd semester as well? cos the decision'll come rather late (may/june) if they do, rite?

If you're applying for a transfer from college, like I am, then yes they will need your second semester GPA as well. Unfortunately, transfer applicants are considered last, after high school applicants and the like. My second semester grades don't come out till April/May, and McGill doesn't give transfer applicant decisions until June/July. Harsh.

I am also applying to Mcgill from an American university (Syracuse University.) On their admissions webpage they say that their admissions decisions are sent between March 1st and May 17th.

Thedoverdemon: Where did you get your information?

If you're currently a freshman trying to transfer, then yeah they have to wait for 2nd semester grade reports (I called and asked).

My mistake. I'm a sophomore trying to transfer and that probably explains the difference between our situations.

I'm a sophomore trying to transfer too (I tried last year as a freshman which is why I knew that)! My status is still "Ready for Review," what about you?

I'm a freshman applying for transfer from a Canadian university, so my release date is right at the end, after transfer applicants from a U.S. university.

Information from http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/decision/

oh darn. thats late. i wonder how many places do they open to freshmen transfers from the states...
which canadian university are you transferring from?

I'm transferring from the University of British Columbia. I don't know how many places they'll have left for transfer students, but it seems like I'm at the bottom of their priority lists.

Are you from HK?

I'm a sophomore trying to transfer into the Arts faculty from an American university (Syracuse University.)

Would it be impertinent of me to ask if all of us transfers can share out stats? I'm incredibly curious to know how I stand in comparison to other transfers.

College GPA: 3.659 (with a broad range of courses with varied difficulties)
HS GPA: 84
SAT: 1330 (710 verbal, 620 math)
SAT II Bio E: 600
SAT II Math I: 580
SAT II Writing: 650

Do anyone know how Americans fare in comparison to Canadian students in the transfer process or the general application process? McGill is a bit reticent with this information.

EDIT: Also, most of my college grades are A/A-'s with a few B+'s thrown in. My GPA is so low because of ONE C+ from a Chem course.

I'll share my sucky stats!

College GPA: 3.327 (though upward trend...3.6 last semester)
HS rank: 2/350
SAT: 1330 (650 verbal, 680 math)
SAT II Math IIC: 620
SAT II Chem: 570 :(
SAT II Writing: 710

Ryu597: Same with me!! That one C+ stopped me from getting accepted last year. I hate chem... What faculty and major did you apply to?

Got accepted out of high school, so I'm hoping that'll do something for me.

Was it really the one C+ that prevented you from getting into McGill? If so, I'm really worried. I'm applying to the faculty of the Arts and I intend to major in philosophy. I really can't picture myself studying anything else; a predicament that I believe many philosophy majors are in.

I wrote an email to my Chem professor with the hopes that he will justify my poor performance in chem (the grade was far below what I anticipated.) Perhaps I will be fortunate and we will find that there was a computational error on their behalf, or perhaps I will be fortunate and learn that McGill won't really care about one science grade that is completely irrelevant to my intended studies. Either way, I will be devastated if I don't get into McGill. I've visited the school many times but have never had the courage to apply. I really want to spend my final two years of college in Montreal.

Also, I am fortunate enough to have a well known philosophy professor at SU write a recommendation on my behalf to McGill. He has a good history with McGill so maybe that will just tip the scales in my favor.

Also, what was your HS GPA?

I don't think your C+ in chem will hurt your chances at all b/c you're applying to Arts. I was applying to Science, so I needed a 3.0GPA minimum in each science.
I got one B in HS, so my GPA was close to a 4.0 and higher than that weighted (almost all honors/AP classes).
The recommendation should def help you. Does your app status still say "Ready for Review?" It's driving me crazy! I'd do almost anything to get into McGill, sigh.

Yes, my application is "Ready for Review." I check it twice daily even though I know that it won't change until at least halfway into February.

The anticipation is killing me. Are you applying anywhere else?

Yeah, I'm ridiculously obsessive about checking Minerva. Actually, last year my application status changed to "Further Review Required" at the end of January, so it might change sooner than you think.

I applied to Tulane b/c the application was free. I'm thinking of applying other places b/c I can't imagine having to come back to UD next year, but I just can't think of anywhere else I'd be happy. I'm completely stuck on McGill. Did you apply anywhere else?

Haha, I check Minerva in the morning, and then once at school if I'm near an open computer, and then once at night.

It always says the same thing: Ready for Review. :-p

I feel slightly obsessive.

If only Minerva would actually work for me, it won't accept me PIN anymore. :-(

As of today...Further Review Required. I guess now's the time to pull a 4.0. Ahh, pressure!

Hey Ryu597, you're right about McGill and philosophy, haha.

I am also a prospective philosophy major now, even though I at first thought of going into political science and/or philosophy. I have my mind set on McGill, so I'm not applying anywhere else. Either I get in and go, or I stay at UBC, which is still a pretty good school.

My first semester college GPA is at 3.8, with courses in English, history, philosophy, archaeology, and political science. Minerva says "Ready for Review," even though McGill does not seem to have received my high school transcript, which I sent around a month ago.

As I did grade 12 at a Canadian high school, I did not have to take the SATs, and do not have a class rank. However, my high school average is around 91-92%, which is a 4.0 here. I also did the British GCSE curriculum 2-3 years back, and got 7 As, 3 A*s (10 As). I'm not sure McGill cares about the GCSEs all that much though.

huh? how come my application already says 'ready for review' when i've only sent in my transcript for my first semester in uw-madison? im confused - do they need my transcript in the second semester to make the decision? uurggh. the suspense of THIS is already killin me.
NOTE: im currently a FRESHMEN, not a SOPHOMORE.
