City of Hope Internship 2016

@HuangoBango ?

@Ipapadakis3 How did you know which PIs not on the list were accepting students?

@MissfutureENT I didn’t, I just emailed people asking if they would be willing to take me

I only got 1 rejection and thats it…still waiting on 3 people to reply. It’s not Spring Break anymore, so hopefully the replies start coming in because I’ve already mentally given up. This just seems like a really unfair process, basing it all on “first-come first-serve”.

@JuicyMango please don’t give up hope!!! Dr. Chen gave me a few names in neuro so pm me and I’ll give them to you

Does anyone know when City of Hope has to send out the official acceptances?

Did u confir with anyone??

Hey guys, so I confirmed with Dr. Badie but I’m nervous they’re running out of funding…Dr. Badie was unfamiliar with the Summer Academy program but said he’d be willing to take me (he wasn’t on the list) so I emailed Stephanie Patterson to contact him so we could figure it out to confirm my place and she emailed me back saying she would but that she hoped they still had funding :frowning: I really hope they do! It seems unfair that I might not have a place although I confirmed midday yesterday but he was just unsure of how to confirm my spot with the program and she was out of office so fingers crossed everything goes through.

Also do we do research on the weekends? And what are the times we have to be there? Is it like a 9-5 thing? Trying to figure out something with my aunt in the event I’m confirmed but not sure about transportation

@Ipapadakis3 maybe the funding is extra. Since Dr. Badie wasn’t on the list, maybe he wasn’t included in the budget. I hope it works out though. Good luck.

Idk this just seems like a bogus program to me…its only been a mere 5 days, yet it seems like every lab is already full. I think they’ve already pre-selected students, but I understand because its a big risk to them and their funding to take on new students. I just thought that this was the type of program to allow kids who’ve never had actual research experience, but who’ve excelled in school, to “get their feet wet”. But I guess I was wrong. On the bright side, there are many other summer programs I applied to that I’m waiting on :). I just want to reiterate that the first round is completely fair (how the college admission process works), but after that its about who you know and the connections you have.

I’m open to disagreement. I’d like to hear your experiences so far.

And the only people who have agreed to give us students a chance were mostly not on the provided contact list… which is ironic imo.

@JuicyMango I agree as well. Unfortunately second round can often be heavily influenced by biases and preferences

@HuangoBango Thank you for letting me know that I’m not the only one that feels this way. I think that this is a great program, but there are definitely loopholes that need to be fixed for future applicants. City of Hope mentors should be searching for the best and the brightest, but this is definitely not the way to do so. I thought the 2nd round would just be a closer look at the 180 applicants to pick the 70 most qualified students :/.

Anyone know if they have funding left? I emailed Stephanie but never got a reply…

@lpapadakis3 I have a PI who is willing to mentor me and I emailed Stephanie to ask what next step to take. She said she would check with my PI but also had to make sure how much funding is left. Does that mean there’s a chance of not getting a position in the Student Academy even after reaching an agreement with a PI?

@1912nk It may happen especially since the researchers that are not on the list may not be aware of the funding situation so they may not immediately confirm with the program directors that they’ve selected a student. Consequently, by the time they do, the program may have little/no funding left.
I would make sure your PI knows about this asap and to tell them to contact the program as well.
Good luck!!

@1912nk and @HuangoBango I emailed Stephanie regarding funding and got this reply:
"Thank you for your email. The process to match mentors and students will take some time. I will know officially if we can accept a student by the end of the month. Thank you for your patience in this matter. " so, people with PIs on the list, did you guys get any other confirmation? This makes it sound like everyone’s going to have to wait a bit… And my PI confirmed with Stephanie and Dr. Salvaterra on Tuesday so fingers crossed I’m in…

Also, just found out I have an offer to intern at Mass General at their MIND neuro institute under their director of neuro imaging and neurodegenerative diseases, what should I tell them? COH is my top but I don’t want to lose this as my back up…

@Ipapadakis3 How are you getting all these awesome offers? I’ve gotten 4 straight rejections so far…they didn’t even give me a chance to submit my resume or have an interview with them :(.

@HuangoBango Thank you!! I’m hoping it works out because my PI was on the list and hopefully knew about funding. I’ll keep everyone posted.
