Class of 2015 Cal Poly Pomona Future residents

Are any of you taking a car to college?

I will probably take mine… since i will be going home every weekend, if i can. You never know when you will need to go to a store to get some stuff either.

Same here … I don’t know how people just take a bike and get around every where like that… I need my car… But if Ur one of those bike people I commend you… I wouldn’t be able to

Hey you guys! That’s a little discouraging! We are traveling form N. Cal because of the promise that CPP is moving away from being a " commuter" school.

I’m not a commuter… I just want my car to go out … I’m only going to be commuting once a month to see my folks

Heyy I’m jumping in on this thread
Have you guys heard anything actually bad about specific dorms? Like, really bad, not just that they’re older than the suites and not as nice haha

Well today my cousin who went there told me a lot about the school especially the dorms, if you have any specific questions I’ll try to answer based on what he told me about his experience.

Shrinkrap, don’t worry, its just that we want to have cars to go to places. Its impossible to live without a car in southern california, no matter what campus your on. I hope that it is moving away from being a commuter campus, it seems to be doing the right things right now.
bl4ke, i have always wanted this question answered, how dirty are the hall bathrooms?

They’re not that dirty but occasionally there are minor floods so he told me to wear sandals with high platforms when you take showers in there.

Ewe floods :s … My Cal poly admissions counselor gave a presentation at my school and said “wanna make a lot of friends? -bring a car to college.” lol

“Its impossible to live without a car in southern california, no matter what campus your on.”

Hmmm. I guess you’re right. I used to live in So Cal, but in Westwood and West LA, you could get by. I wonder what kids will do if it’s too far to drive.

I HATED driving in LA…

haha, epic bathroom floods! Yeah, taking a car makes sense, especially if you want to go out with friends.

Yeahh it can be easy to get by without one, I know exactly what you mean for Westwood, the college town is like right on top of UCLA, it’s great! haha I love that, but a car here would definitely be helpful :)

And thanks bl4ke360! If I think of any specifics Ill let you know!

Plus CCP is only 30 minutes away from Disneyland :)

Hopefully the requiring freshman to live on campus will help it move away from being a commuter school, I will most likely be attending/living there next year, but being from San Diego, I assume Pomona is the same in the part where you need a car to go anywhere, so naturally I will be bringing mine with me.

Just finished engineering day and we are all pretty impressed!

Shrinkrap, tell us what you thought was cool!! :)

Beautiful campus, interesting architechture (esp admin building), great time in the various civil engineering labs, informed tour guides, beautiful library and student center. Decent food and dorms. Horrid traffic.

haha, well, its good that we are going to live on campus, getting around the traffic! That sounds awesome! I really do hope the library is good, i know thats where i will spend most of my time! (:

We were also at Engineering Day today (but I didn’t notice any traffic. ;-)).

This was our second visit to the campus, and I agree with all of the “good stuff” that Shrinkrap mentioned. Each time I’ve been so pleased by the friendliness and willingness to help by the students, staff and professors. I already feel a part of the Bronco family (did you see Billy Bronco this morning? heehee).

The “old” red-brick dorms are quite “normal” as far as old-school residence halls go. The hallways, rooms themselves, etc. remind me of my daughter’s room her freshman year at Point Loma. Her sophomore room was a bit bigger and more of the “suite” style, but I certainly can’t see any problem with the rooms themselves. My son is “used to” his sister’s type of room, so he didn’t see anything that surprised him.

It was our first time in Los Olivos (Dining Commons) and the food was good. My mom had a piece of fish that she said was very good. I had a nice, fresh deli sandwich & salad bar. My son had pizza, a sandwich, and some other “warm” food (egg rolls & chicken nuggets, I think). He was bummed, at the end of the meal, to see one of the professors walk by with a hamburger - he hadn’t seen those! He said that as long as the Commons has pizza, burgers & sandwiches, he’s good. We were disappointed to find that they’re a Pepsi establishment since we are fervent Diet Coke drinkers. :-D

The best part of the day, IMO, was having Dr. Yeung sit with us and chat… sharing about his family, etc. I love that the faculty drops by to have meals with the students - something I valued about PLNU as well. It’s so important from both ends (I’m a teacher) that the students & professors make personal connections & it seems (from our two visits - the Showcase of Excellence in January & today) that this is a priority … at least with the Engineering department.

Sorry for getting long-winded, but I’ve valued the contributions that others have made here (like bugging my son to check his email since someone had posted about the MDPT test & Brendan had said nothing about it!), and I know that we all value first-hand experiences & opinions.

I’d be happy to answer any other questions from anyone!
