semiserious-
Ball State got mentioned in post #4 of this thread, Oral roberts in #18, and Morehead State (that one still cracks me up!) #27.

Doesn't that also leave out Harvard?

Wow Jym, you spent a lot of time looking that up just to show me up. ;)

One time Ball State played Sac State in football and it definately made me giggle.

Are you serious? This, if real, is too funny.
And sorry to disappoint you, but the schools you suggested were mentioned in the first few threads... They'e classics... Didn't take much time to retrieve at all... :)

Semiserious-
I don't think Sac State was mentioned previously in the list of schools with the worst names! You have a winner! :)

My Penn grad friend says that Penn has the worst name because it's a private with a "public sounding" name.

yeah I thought Penn was public until just a few weeks ago

Washington University in St. Louis. I never know whether to say Washington University or Washington University in St. Louis, which it seems to go by officially now. When I say Washington University, people often think I mean GWU.

Almost all the schools that I applied to have funny names:
Pomona-it's so weird sounding
Claremont McKenna-so long, and cmc sounds funny
Middlebury-this sounds like a shrub
Tufts-when I didn't know anything about this school, I threw away all their mailings because the name was so unappealing
Johns Hopkins-hard to say!

I also applied to Georgetown and Brown, and I like those!
I have to agree with other people though, Vanderbilt probably sounds the best.

Their are community colleges and junior colleges but only one, the incomparable, Leland Stanford Junior University.

Some people take grief their entire lives for having attended a junior university.

"'Berkeley' sounds nice."

But nobody in California, at least northern California says Berkeley. It is spelled UCB and pronounced 'Cal'.

University of Pennsylvannia is cool name. Unfortunately people shortened it to "Penn" with obvious problem that I don't need to elaborate. And the "new" name people or even the school's website try to pedal, "UPenn" is no better. "U" sounds too much like state U, and UPenn makes you think of being uppended. Not to mention being in the vacinity of UConn, another state school known for basketball. Poor University of Pennsylvannia !

Oh, Cambridge gets my vote for top name. Princeton is up there too.

Longwood College

I think Sweet Briar is an adorable name for a women's college even if it doesn't sound that prestigious. Sweet Briar women know that their education was excellent.

I also like Wellesley, Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore, Whitman, Mount Holyoke, (not nun like at all, I go to a school called Convent of the Sacred Heart, so we can talk about nun names)

Don't like Randolph Macon Women's College, Colorado College (sounds public)

Eulen,

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I'm a native Southern Californian who attends Cal, but for some reason I call it "Berkeley" all the time. I've also heard other students and professors here refer to Cal as just "Berkeley" as well. It's good to know that we've been mispronouncing it the whole time. The acronym 'UCB' is "obviously" pronounced 'Cal'. You should know, you're from Oregon!

Look, I'm not trying to be mean, really. I've heard both "Cal" and just plain-old "Berkeley" when people refer to this school.

I think Cal predominates, at least N. California, at least among Californians who have been there a while, except when speaking to non-Californians, or perhaps when it is being contrasted with other UC campuses. Then it becomes Berkeley. Besides, I thought I was being funny. How about you?

some of the worst, in my opinion (if they've already been said, i apologize!): skidmore, swarthmore, wesleyan, yale, d'youville, drexel, gonzaga, hofstra, ithaca (always makes people sound like they have a lisp), rutgers
and some of the names of the houses at harvard are unappealing: i mean come on, wigglesworth? hurlbut (sp?)

best name= UC BERKELEY
WORST NAME= immaculatta university

I've always heard it called Berkeley when referred to in an academic sense and Cal when talking about athletics. For example, "Berkeley is a good school", but "Cal has a good football team". At least that's how it is east of the Mississippi.
