Current Columbia College student here! Ask me anything.
What is the most unexpected thing you learned/experienced at Columbia? Also, what is your major?
Are there a lot students who major in visual arts in Columbia?
@rapkat I am majoring in Political Science and Human Rights but I applied as interested in Political Science and Economics. The most unexpected thing for me has been how interesting some books in the core are if you close read them.
@jctony no. None that I’ve met or that I’ve heard of. There are a lot of theatre and music majors though.
Thx, I am a new immigrant to US one year ago, still learning english, wanna major in visual arts, worked ass off to get 1440 new sat, do u think I have a chance?
@2016north2020 Wow, my interviewer was a Poli Sci student!
@2016north2020 Thanks so much! I’m extremely interested in the core, do students generally put a lot of effort into the readings and discussions or treat it as something they just have to do?
@rapkat it depends on the student. The more serious students treat it seriously or at least do all the readings, whereas there are slacker students that I know that only read The Iliad or haven’t done any of the readings. I’d say that every student should take the readings seriously, though, it makes exams easier.
@jctony did you apply as an international student?
@2016north2020 I’m permanent resident, just immigrated last year, not international student
@jctony I’m not sure; I think you have a good chance, my friend got in with a 2250
@jctony you may have a better chance because you are applying for visual arts. Did you submit a portfolio?
@2016north2020 thank you. I’ll just cross fingers.
@2016north2020 are there a lot of students who major in film and media studies?
@2016north2020 , sadly no, I looked up info online that visual arts in college is pretty general, but I talked about minimalism in my essay to connect to my major. hope that helps.
@Judith9928 I haven’t met any but I know they try to accept students in every major to each class, so there’s got to at least be some here
@2016north2020 thank you!
Last year (Class of 2020), there were 620 students accepted in the Early Round.
Obviously, all 620 of these will matriculate.
The TOTAL number of students that will eventually matriculated was 1428.
The data that you were referring to of 45% is stating that of the 1428 who matriculated, 620 (or roughly 45%) were accepted in the Early Round.
Last year, there were 3520 applications sent in for Early Decision. On the surface is appears that the acceptance rate in the early round is around 18%. However, there are many athletes who are being recruited and they are normally asked to apply ED. I am estimating that number around 200 athletes. Therefore, if you subtract out the athletes, you have 3320 applications and 420 admits. Slightly under 13% acceptance, or 1 out of 8.
You may be the one out of 8…All I was saying is that typically, if you are that special 1, you know it.
Folks come onto this board and are asking for someone to “chance” them, or they start spewing off their credentials, I just think it is good to keep in mind that MOST folks will NOT be admitted.
Take out the athletes, and for every admitted application (regular plus early), there will be 20 rejections.
