Cornell University Fall 2020 Transfer

Did anyone apply to CALS Communication?

Anyone else had the Fin Aid portal’s Transfer Transcript status changed?

No

Is it if we survived the first wave, we will have a higher chance to get in because the first wave sends rejection to most regular transfer applicants? I’m regular applicant btw. I’m so unconfident rn. I just got rejected by UCLA with a 3.97 GPA. Cornell is my last school on my list.

Do transfer rates vary with college? I am applying to CAS and everyone else here seems to be CALS or CE.

@ndrsn0208 I’m in the same boat. I got rejected by UCLA so now I’m just trying to accept that I will probably get rejected by the rest of the schools.

tbh, I’ve never seen a letter begins with “Congratulations!” myself. I’ve applied for 16 universities in high school and I only admitted to one college. And I heard that news from my friend because I didn’t have the courage to open the decision letter after I got rejected by UCLA and UCSD on the same day. And then I was accepted by a satellite campus of my current school, rank around 50 national-wide. But I don’t think I deserved it.

I took 8 AP tests, all of them are 5. My SAT was 1480 and my TOEFL was 108. My essays were good and I have some ECs. I was expecting that I would be accepted to some schools. But the fact was that only one school accepted me.

I then want to do a transfer. Because I know I can do well academically to prove to other schools that I’m qualified. However, my current campus didn’t provide many courses. (kinda like take intro-level courses at my satellite campus and then transfer to the main campus to take more courses) So I finished all my enter-to-major courses in freshman year (since I transferred lots of AP credits) and transferred to the main campus to take more advanced CS courses. I have to do this because if I didn’t transfer earlier, I can’t fulfill the CS prerequisite at Cornell. Meanwhile, I co-founded a coding club at my school, I build an Ai from scratch, and I did Math peer tutor.

I know my original motivation was to be more competitive to transfer to a better college. But I really proud that I actually did many things that I wouldn’t even think of before. I pushed my limits to a new level. tbh, if I wasn’t thinking of transferring at that time, I’m probably still at the satellite campus, follow the trends of other students, never stands out.

I applied UMich, UCB, UCLA, and Cornell for CS major at College of Engineering. UMich rejected me on Feb 28, two weeks after I submitted my application. They said that I didn’t fulfill their Chemistry requirements (I don’t think they even read my application). I would say I’ve put a lot of work to build my Common Application. I got two recommendation letters from my CS/Math professors, which I got A for both classes. And I drafted the personal statement for about a year. I have more confidence in UMich and Cornell than UC colleges simply because of my personal statement and the recommendation letters on Common App. I used to have a strong sense I will get into Cornell because I fulfilled all the requirements (except for one Chem courses, which the admission officer said that’s fine) and my GPA is decent. But as UCLA rejected me today, my last school on the list is Cornell. The history of rejection by 15 colleges during high school seems recurring. I put many efforts into this so that I won’t feel regret. I mean I will regret myself if I didn’t try to do the transfer. But it is still said to see that all the schools reject me.

Sorry that I posted a super long post. My confidence just hurts again. I really want to share my story so that I can feel better. I’m so happy to have a place like this. I still have a strong sense that Cornell will accept me. Hope that’s true. And good luck to everyone!

@ndrsn0208 - had the same thing happen to me in high school but i understand why i got rejected. 3.4 gpa, 1300 sat, so that is not a great thing.

u sound like u have a lot of passion and im sure that u will get in somewhere. i feel that u might go to Penn state lol

hopefully, u find ur place

@ndrsn0208 You should definitely apply to more schools, but choose schools that are not the most selective in the country. It’s hard for even the most perfect students to get into these schools, so cut yourself some slack. But also, you are supposed to apply to safeties, matches, and reaches so that you can have a backup plan. If you solely apply to reaches, the odds are not in your favor.

Check common app. Many schools are still open! Good luck

@heyigotnoclue Thank you! Yap, I’m from Penn State lol. But I wasn’t at the main campus initially. And I’m also an international student so the tuition is crazy. Kinda feel like I spend lots of money but I didn’t get the education I want. I’m at the main campus rn, which I think is quite competitive.

@aspiringgirl Thank you so much for the suggestion. Sorry I didn’t mention this in my previous post. Actually, I’m from Penn State, which has a very strong Engineering program. That’s my backup plan, stays at Penn State. I just want to try to prove myself that I’m qualified for the top 20 colleges. Especially, I got rejected by 15 schools in high school. Also, I was admitted to a satellite campus initially, which I didn’t think I deserved it. Kinda waste my money because the satellite campus only offers intro-level courses, and I already have many AP credits. So if I transferred to a better college, at least I will feel better about my money spend on the satellite campus.

@ndrsn0208 - LOLLL I GUESSED RIGHT?

so, um personal story here, i actually ONLY got into penn state after high school. i applied to like 30 ish schools. got 2 waitlist and all rejections and I only got into penn state abington. it was abington or california community college.

i chose the community college path and i think i really geniunely understand how u feel. if i had stayed at abington, i would be in ur place right now. i know that penn state offers the 2 year plan to go to the main campus and from what i heard, it is a pretty good option. if you want to talk more, feel free to message me or i can message u. i can share a bit more and im a great hype man so hmu

@heyigotnoclue sure man. I don’t think I can do any hw until next Tuesday lol.

I’m really rooting for everyone here on this page. I feel like while we all have a different background, we have all worked so hard and continued to follow our dreams and pursue our goals.

About transfer rates by college, and it definitely does differ. Cornell has published their transfer student information for past years. CALS and ILR take more students because they have more spots to fill. I think CALS represents about half of the incoming transfer class with ILR coming in second to that. Schools like CE, CAS, AAP, etc. have much lower rates because they have a lot fewer spots to fill.

This is the list they have online for 2019 Transfer Students by School:

Agriculture and Life Sciences: 223
Architecture, Art, and Planning: 10
Arts and Sciences: 44
Engineering: 23
Cornell SC Johnson College of Business
The Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management: 47
School of Hotel Administration: 74
Human Ecology: 49
Industrial and Labor Relations: 118

spots open?

those numbers seem promising, but im not going to get my hopes up. That rejection from UCLA was not excepted. hate to see it happen. but I agree with @keepthatsmile

rooting for everyone on this thread. Perhaps we should talk about random things to pass the time.

Today I spent a good chunk of money on food to make myself feel better about not getting the JCK transfer scholarship. But then I got into a state school and into UCSD so I guess its a good balance. Two negatives for two positives ??‍♂️

@TenTsewang4 It only tells you the number of transfer students who entered Cornell in 2019 and the school they will be attending. There’s definitely more spots open given that not every transfer who gets accepted decides to attend. But you get some sense of competitiveness.

I saw everyone’s story and honestly, I was really moved by y’all’s stories about wanting to bounce back so I want to share mine as well. I also applied to quite a few colleges out of high school (4.2GPA, 1460SAT, good extracurriculars) and got rejected by every single school, except the one that I couldn’t pay for. I even got rejected from San Diego State!

I moved to a different state and ended up enrolling in a community college, and at the time I didn’t know privates even accepted transfers. But just like y’all, I did more research on admissions than I’ve spent on any assignment, and ended up applying to ILR. I really hope you all get in, and maybe we can grab some food in Collegetown after all the quarantine is over. Good luck to you guys. I can’t start dm’s because my account is new, but please feel free to send one. I’d love to chat.

Random, but I honestly love all the positivity in this chat! College Confidential has the reputation for being “toxic,” but it’s users like you guys who make College Confidential what it should be: a forum for encouragement and exchange of advice from student to student. I really wish the best for each and everyone of you!
