COSMOS 2012 Waiting Board

@momentum I do, but im probably guna be more of the pathology side first

@ Cosmo lol I finished the Cahsee in less than an hour and started doing my hw in class XD

@Chocolatechips could you post your stats so I can get a good grip of how good one has to be to get accepted? :D

Chocolatechips said something about them not caring too much about stats, and are more focused on one’s passion for the subject. But yes, stats would be interesting.

I don’t remember exactly what they asked for, but my UW GPA was 3.73 and W GPA was 3.94. My highest SAT score (at the time) was a 2000 (700 CR+660 M+640 W), but I raised it up to a 2110 (superscore) senior year. Hahahaha. We only had juniors and seniors because of the Physics prereq. If if helps, I had all As in my science classes but Bs and one C in all my math classes. Pretty much everyone in my cluster except for three people (including me) took AP Physics B/C soph. or jun. year. Like I said, as long as you didn’t BS your essays too much and you think your teachers wrote good recs, you’re fine.
And the people who are worried about the Biomed cluster(s), you’re not going to like what I’m going to say. COSMOS is a state funded program, so they have to have at least a certain ratio of ethnicities. Looking from the outside, BMED didn’t live up to its hype of intelligence because there were plenty of people who weren’t that smart. You’ll have a great time, don’t get me wrong, but don’t think that they pick purely the cream of the crop and you’ll only be around super smart Asians. I think the Physics clusters are the exceptions because they already rule out like 90% of the applicants.

Yeah I was gonna apply for a cluster, but then I realized it had a Physics prerequisite, so I didn’t. Kind of disappointed since it was definitely something I was interested in and was one of my top choices.

I’m sorry, cynnek. If you don’t get into COSMOS this year, you could always reapply after you’ve taken Physics. Plus, I’m sure there are some awesome summer programs than involve Physics/engineering.

Oh no need to be sorry. Luckily there was another cluster I was interested in as well, if not more!

@chocolatechipsss
One of my clusters said that they preferred physics, but they did not list it as a prerequisite. Does this mean they still accept people who have not studied physics in class?

MonentumA7, I don’t know for sure because I didn’t apply for a cluster that listed Physics only as a preference, but I do know that they will give more priority to the upperclassmen that HAVE taken Physics. The professors also take in to account what place you listed their cluster (1st, 2nd, or 3rd), i.e. you have a better chance if you listed it as your first choice. If you listed it as your third or maybe second and haven’t taken Physics (esp. if it’s because you’re too young), they tend to bypass you because they’re under the assumption that you can reapply if you don’t get into your higher choices. Hope that makes sense! :)

@Momentum My ap comp sci teacher, a teacher fellow at ucsd, had told us that if it says preferred you shouldn’t have to worry if you didn’t take it. However, what chocolate chip is saying makes sense. I still wouldn’t worry if I were you, though. What’d you apply to that has a physics preference?

To all who suffered from the Cahsee…i feel your pain!!!
There was always this one girl in the classroom that took the ENTIRE time to do that friggen test…and she had like 10 questions left when time was up…
the rest of us finished in about 20 minutes for the math portion and we had to SIT THERE and do nothing for 2 hours while staring at her cuz our teachers wont let us do hw/ipods/etc. if everyone isnt done…loll

That was a total waste of 8 hours…
I think my brain’s fallen asleep because of the complete boredom I suffered. Thankfully, everyone in my class was relatively good at math. We had an hour and forty five minutes to watch a movie, due homework, and listen to music.
Meanwhile the juniors and seniors and freshmen laughed at us for not being able to sleep in :p

Am I the only one that took the CAHSEE last month? o.o I guess I got the painstaking boredom over with then? I actually brought my laptop and worked on my COSMOS essay responses during the extra time I had after the CAHSEE haha

I took Conceptual Physics H freshman year. Would that have met a prerequisite? This is just out of curiosity…

@cosmogony
Yes, that would have met the prerequisite.

@Chocolate THANKS ALOT DUDE LOL I WAS WORRIED BIOMED IS GUNA BE FILLED WITH ASIANS LOL THAT DROPED THE STONE IN MY THROAT

Omg hey, I am Asian ok -____- haha. When I went to the open house, all the kids looked like smarty pants. I honestly look like I’d be but an average student, yknow like doesn’t really care about grades etc etc. However, I am not lawl

Yeah, no one ever expects me to be “intelligent” haha. I’m blonde and a cheerleader (no hate XD). But that’s when the whole don’t judge a book by its cover takes play :)

Nicole, don’t worry. There are many people of different hair colors there. Hahaha.

I was on my schools twirl flag (short not color guard) and everyone usually thinks that the girls in it have no time for hw and what not because practices are till like 6 everyday and on weekends. Oh the stereotypes…
