COSMOS 2012 Waiting Board

Some schools only weigh AP classes, not Honors.

Yeah, my school doesn’t weight honors math classes, only AP ones. Strange… the UC system weights them in your GPA though, so that’s good. :]

hey ya’ll. Any of you guys apply to uci?

My school doesn’t even have honors classes. At least they’re not labeled. But we have wayyyy to many choices for AP classes.

No wonder some people’s GPA’s are so high… my school doesn’t weigh Honors as well.

And I applied to UCI. Seems like not that many did.

I would have applied to UCI since it’s the closest and I wouldn’t have to fly on an airplane, but UCD seemed more interesting. :)

At my school the levels are regular, advanced, honors, and AP. Only honors and AP are weighted. Is that the same as your guys’ ?

At my school we only have one AP class so naturally it’s weighted. All IB courses are weighted and so that’s why they only weigh a select few honors courses… because most students go on to take IB anyway and can end up with a 4.6 cumulative weighted GPA. But it still puts me at a disadvantage for COSMOS… Oh well. I guess they see that I took the honors classes on my transcript and have a 4.0 unweighted GPA…

IMO schools like mine that do not weight any classes at all, AP or not, are the most disadvantaged

@afourally My school is the same.

My school has “pre-ap” classes which are at the level of honors classes, but aren’t weighted like them. A full year of APs can get you a 5.0 though.

Campus: UCD
Clusters: Mathematics, Physics in Electro-optics & Nuclear Technology, and Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems in that order. Although, I regret putting Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems as my last one! I’m a lot more interested in that now, :[

EC’s mentioned: Comp sci Club, Band, Fencing, and I don’t remember the other 2 ._.
UW GPA: 3.91
Weighted: 4.46

I think my essays were pretty good
If anything, my GPA’s my down fall. =/

GPA has little impact on decisions. Take that from a COSMOS alum who heard directly from the profs.

@choco What impacts more? Extra curriculars or GPA?

@afourally I’ve heard that it’s mostly your essays about why you want to attend your chosen cluster and then the free response Q.

I’m assuming it’s essays, teacher recs, GPA, then ECs.

@missiris: My teacher said it was vice versa. The main staff reads the essay about why you want to go and then if they think you’re qualified, they give your essays to the professors and from there, the professors choose their students.
@chocolate yeah, I agree.

For the free response topic, which question did you all pick? The one about the scientific/mathematic discovery or the one about why science/math interests you? Just wondering. :3

Last year, I picked the one about why math/science interested me because I thought it would show more about myself. The more the readers know about you, the better.

@Sourpiggy YOUR SCHOOL HAS FENCING???FREAKING AWESOME!
