Isn't this thread transforming into a hot stew??

i quite frankly can't understand why anyone in their right mind would go to BJU, even if you are a hard core christian. some of the things that students are required, or not allowed to do at that school are ridiculous... its hard to believe a school like that exists.

There is no way that BJU or anything like it is representative of modern American conservatism. Have you ever read any P. J. O'Rourke? How about the National Review? With the exception of gay marriage (in NR's case), they're both right on the money. Notre Dame is conservative, BJU is nuts in a very real and scary way.

"wouldnt you love to just streak through the campus naked with an abercrombie hat and multiple body piercings, jewelry, tangled purple hair, smoking pot, waving the gay flag, and leaving a trail of pornographic pictures behind you?"

yes, yes I would.

PJ O'Rourke would approve, he's all about having good times.

oh, and the Bush administration and their actions don't seem to represent true conservatism either. (such as being fiscally responsible)

and now it will start...AGAIN!

Wow... BJU... is like... OMG.... it SCARES me that there's a school like that.

Seventh Day Adventist schools have non-coed dorms and no meat is permitted on campus... but still.... that doesn't compare to BJU.

That school sends chills down my spine.

Did anyone see Bob Jones on the OC?

How awesome was that?

even BYU doesn't sound as scary as Bob Jones.

lol I noticed that as well... That was interesting... That bible study group seemed very ill-tempered.

someone made a very interesting point- you find people with no tolerance for opposing viewpoints in various places, from Bob Jones to San Fran to New York. the only difference is what side of any given argument these people are on. i couldnt begin to count how many times people here have lumped me with the Bob Jones-style nuts because i express moderately conservative opinions, but its at least equal to the amount of crap that non-religious conservatives have to take from religious conservatives in those areas where they are dominant.

the key is that we all need to actually listen to each other, and try to argue on facts, rather than make sweeping generalizations and use personal attacks to bolster weak debating skills.

btw that streaking thing sounds like a hilarious idea - ud probably get a similar reaction if you wore a Bush-Cheney shirt to an anti-war rally, except the hippies would just beat you up, while the bob jones folks would probably shoot u.

Yeah, BJ is truly nuts, but you'll find psychos on the other side of the spectrum at nearly every single college in America.

Radical gay and feminist indoctrination, practically encouraging abortions, affirmative action, etc. You have people taking "psycho" dogmatic stances on these nearly everywhere - why no complaints?

Trust me - these people are no more open minded than the guys a BJU.

I wore an "M go Bush" T-shirt into a pack of raving liberals at a Kerry rally on the quad this year. I only got some funny looks. Hey, I had a late afternoon class and I wasn't going to alter my route for them!

...still doesn't compare to the time when a little white girl asked if I wanted to sign a petition to stop the "racist uncle tom" Ward Connerly's MCRI (on MLK day), and I told her that Ward Connerly has done twice as much for equality as Martin Luther King did. The entire group collecting those signatures turned and stared me down.

...if looks could kill ;)

I think the problem with many conservatives I've met is that they are overly agressive and assertice and general jerks. They regurgitate the same strategy emails they get from the GOP(I know because I'm on their list too)

for example, when I asked a conservative which LA mayoral candidate they support. He responded, They're both democrats so they're scum

how can one have intellectual discourse with someone like that!

wait, California has a Republican resident now?

Where was I? ;)

(I don't count Ahnald)

yes, but you'll see that in many of the deep left-winged liberals as well...

i'd never heard of BJU til i got on CC...and then when i think about it...i can't understand why anyone would want to go there unless you're a very conservative Christian/racist...

of course CA has republicans

heck Orange county is a KKK stronghold and my hometown is a neonazi stronghold

much of the interior, the central valley and everything south of LA is conservative

sempitern, thats what im talking about right there. how does being a KKK or neonazi stronghold equate "having republicans?" its things like that that poison debate.

thats because the nazi guy is also the head of the local republican committee! also, other young conservative people are members of that nazi group!

case in point, the country club admitted its first jewish person 5 years ago, there still arent any african americans there to the best of my knwledge!

Nazi does not necessarily = republican

but I haven't ever seen any racist bigots in the modern democratic party. Note: I'm not including the dixiecrats that have now become republican

Republicans have taken advantage of the Democratic party's move away from racism ever since Nixon's Southern Strategy in 1968

there are many Republicans in California.. I live in San Diego, and it's quite conservative around here. I don't think Orange County isn't a "KKK stronghold," because of the diversity in that region... it's a huge county. It's true that anything south of LA is pretty conservative, as well as central valley. These areas aren't totally conservative, but on the liberal-conservative spectrum, they're moderately conservative.
People are generally open-minded.

Up here in norcal, we are both liberal and racist as hell. It's like throwing 50 breeds of birds in a cage and asking them to nicely get along. Traffic woes, ****-poor driving, rude people, and economic competition only aggravate it. Still, we've got an awesome medley of cultures here, beautiful women, great weather, and an intelligent atmosphere. Go Ahhhnold!!
