You really can't sincerely apologize for offending someone about your harsh stereotyping and then continue to deride an entire part of the nation.

I'm not trying to defend any fundamentalist, right-wing, Baptist, bible-toting, close minded bigots but it's not fair to try and spread that misperception.

How is it that the South has such mixed perceptions? Close minded Christians and hospitality don't mix very well to me.

"wouldnt you love to just streak through the campus naked with an abercrombie hat and multiple body piercings, jewelry, tangled purple hair, smoking pot, waving the gay flag, and leaving a trail of pornographic pictures behind you???"

Fair guess is that you'd be burned to the stake.

"wouldnt you love to just streak through the campus naked with an abercrombie hat and multiple body piercings, jewelry, tangled purple hair, smoking pot, waving the gay flag, and leaving a trail of pornographic pictures behind you???"

I would LOVE to do that.... and then chant that I am the antichrist

oddly enough when I was in washington dc visiting the smithsonian I have one of these wackos harangue me. Finally, after he wouldnt quit following me and urging me to "turn to Jesus you heathen"(btw, I am Eastern Orthodox Christian) I finally turned around to him and said "I worship the antichrist, give me your materials so that I can infiltrate your church and make all the children worship the devil... and then I laughed in my meanest scariest tone... Well, at this point the guy got a worried look on his face and scurried off.

Interesting experiences abound in contact with all sorts of people!

we were at our farm and my brother was cleaning his 22. He came out to see who drove up and was holding a gun. They just looked scared and drove away-fast!

Whenever I used to tailgate at Buckeye games I would be drunk and talk to those guys who hand out pamphlets about God and stuff for like at least a half an hour.

The ragging on the South is getting kinda old. I mean people all over CC constantly complain about the bible toting Southerners who are so hospitable but hate everyone not like them. Before you insult the region I love, actually VISIT HERE.

And I mean I understand that BJU is kind of ridiculous with some of their rules, but how dare yall make fun of them for trying to live Christian lives and college careers. Although I am a Christian and BJU is definately not for me, I am definately not going to judge them and say that BJU is a "Cult" or anything like that. Thank God there are some good people still out there.

I could easily turn around and say the same kind of generalizations about UC Berkeley but in a liberal sense, but that doesn't accomplish anything.

religious fundies who have no tolerance for anyone and are scared of their own shadow and who use fear/hate mongering and propaganda to remain in power.

Heh, minus the "religious fundies" bit, you just described a number of teacher's I've seen here in San Francisco.

My friend is Christian and she goes to a similar university (no dances just banquets, non-coed dorms, and so on and so forth) in Florida and hates it. They didn't take her English AP credits (she got 5's, a rarity at my school) and she has to pay an exorbitant amount of tuition. The program for her major (english) is awful and the only reason her parents sent her there is because her sisters met their husbands there. Ridiculous. She was like, "My parents find it more important for me to be a homemaker than develop my career." I think she finally is going to just pay for another university herself and transfer. I felt so bad for her.

I've been to SC and its beautiful and the people for the most part are kind and friendly.

On the other hand, streaking through BJU naked with an abercrombie hat and multiple body piercings, jewelry, tangled purple hair, smoking pot, waving the gay flag, and leaving a trail of pornographic pictures behind me is my idea of a good time.

"trying to live Christian lives and college careers"

its not that christians are bad... but, much like saudi arabia we have our own form of wahabbiism known as evangelism. We also have homegrown taliban. BJU is the christian equivalent to the religious "mutwahs" in the middle east which solely teach the bible and are devoted to every single part of it fanatically.

We currently criticize liberals in society but nobody deems it appropriate to critisize the homegrown taliban which has sprung up. If you want an example of their terrorist activities, just look at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombings or the killing of doctors who perform abortions

The thing is, those groups have never been a prominent segment of society (unless you're saying that many of the students in Christian institutions will grow up to be like that), and barely have any support in the country. Much more Muslim women die yearly from honor killings than all the damage Christian extremists do per year.

"The thing is, those groups have never been a prominent segment of society (unless you're saying that many of the students in Christian institutions will grow up to be like that), and barely have any support in the country"

This is untrue. The evangelicals have gained more and more power politically sine Bush was elected into office, and were basically responsbile for his election in 2004.

I agree with tennistennis. The evangelical movement is quickly gaining momentum in our country, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. With issues like gay marriage and abortion becoming more prominent in our domestic affairs, their visibility and influence will only grow.

"This is untrue. The evangelicals have gained more and more power politically sine Bush was elected into office, and were basically responsbile for his election in 2004."

I was talking about about Christian terrorists, referring to the examples given at the end of the post I was replying to.

In reality Christianity grew by 7% in the last 10 years, Mormonism, Hinduism, Scientology, Wicca, Muslim, Buddhism, all grew by more than 75% Hinduism was somethign like 245% so if you want to fear a religious group take over be afraid of the Mormans or the Hindus not the Christians.
