December SAT: Writing

i had -3 10 essay for a 740 in october.

-5 with 10 essay = 710 in October for me

Or the easier explanation for "interested in, even passionate about, BLAH" is that "even passionate about," being enclosed in commas, is a unessential phrase--if the "even passionate about" were taken out, then the sentence must still make sense. Thus the answer is A.

what did you guys get for these two:

1) The democrats and republicans dominate the government, however, other parties still join in.
or was the answer: , though other parties still join in.

2) If we had knowledge of the future, our lives would be predictable.
or was the answer: Were we to have knowledge of the future.

I put "though other parties", and "if we had"

I put the "though" one.

I put "were we to have," but now I'm not sure at all. Damn

Actually, I could be wrong about both of these :-/

can you guys explain why?

i thought i had "after 10" is it just different format or am i seeing things that others don't......

Question: If we have the ability to see the future, blah blah WOULD ..."

It is certainly not "We have" as it is the incorrect tense.

The BEST answer would have been "If we HAD ..."

But that wasn't a choice, which makes this question so hard.

I put: Were we to have, because it's the closest to if we had.

Agree w/ Ykim

i put were we to have because it's conditional

I put If we have had... anyone put the same?

Yes to Ykim917 and Marimare! on "were we to have"

Also, with the "though" question, I put that since it was the only answer choice not an independent clause, which cannot be joined by merely a comma...

yes i also got were we to have.

yep. let the writing pros do the talking.

was one of the answer choices, "even though" for one of the identifying sentence error questions? I remember it being at the end of the 2nd page of Sentence IDs.

are you sure the even interested in/passionate one was "A"?

I got "c"...

I got the interested in and passionate about or something along those lines.

@asianpride: for that one, I picked something else.

there's nothing grammatically wrong with "even though", I think.

the interested/passionate annoyed me and for the last minute or so i switched from a to c to e and then i think i ended up with and "interested and passionate for" which still doesn't make sense.
also i picked "were we to have" b/c like Iildimsum7 said, it's conditional aka subjunctive (sometimes called conjunctive), which i knew from foreign language studies...
