My D found out today on the portal that she was accepted but not to her 1st choice (Biomedical) but her 2nd choice (Biology). Does anyone know if she attends her 1st year as a Bio major, is she still able to apply again for Biomedical Engineering for her sophomore year? And if so, what is the likely hood of getting in?
She has a 4.1 GPA average, excellent EC’s, tons of AP’s but her SAT’s were low. Only 1800.
Hoping someone has some insight. I would hate to send her and then she doesn’t get in her 2nd year. Plus how far behind would she be?

@ratchg Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a limited enrollment program. If I recall correctly, the class is capped at 50 students / year.

I’d hate to give you bad or misleading advice so I’ll suggest you check with the BME Department about transferring into the program from Biology

[url= <a href="Undergraduate Admissions | University of Delaware[/url] the BME curriculum. You can compare it with the biology curriculum to look for differences in the first year or` two.

I certainly would agree with Fauster that you should contact the BME department and inquire about the feasibility of transferring into BME from Biology, especially asking about the historical numbers of spaces available and the in-house competition for these spaces. You also would probably be competing with students whose initial admission major is Engineering Undecided. You might also want to ask about whether these students are given preference over other majors for transfer (I suspect they are but I don’t know for sure).

I can give you the below information from UD’s Internal transfer website:

How do I change my major to biomedical engineering?

Biomedical Engineering is a capacity limited program. Please refer to the registrar’s website on capacity limited programs for more information. To meet with a Biomedical Engineering faculty member to discuss your options, please schedule an appointment by sending an e-mail to schwande@udel.edu.

Will transfer students be accepted?

• Students may transfer to the biomedical engineering major from other departments on campus. Applications from transfer students will be considered in accordance with University policies.

I can give you this info from the BME website:

Biomedical Engineering: Restricted for all students due to program capacity limitations. Prospective student applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a grade of B- or better in both CHEM 103 and MATH 241. (comment-but I suspect much higher grades would be needed to be competitive)

Dates to request transfers into the above major:

For Spring of 2014:

• The change of major period for College of Engineering restricted majors is from the time all fall final grades are posted through January 17. Departments will notify students of their decisions by January 24, 2014.

Hope this info is helpful. Should your D decide to pursue initial admission as a Biology major with the intent of transferring to BME it would be critical that when she goes to New Student Orientation (NSO) that she make her advisor aware of this and then follow whatever advice the advisor gives to her. The first year curriculums for both BME and Biology are quite similar (one course different not counting the FYE course) so I doubt that she would have a problem with scheduling courses if she was accepted for transfer by the beginning of her sophomore year. Good luck.

Thanks Fauster and Mwallenmd. Very helpful info. I am going to contact her admissions advisor.
Good luck to everyone else!

Just found out today via the portal that my daughter has been accepted. She has an 85 average and 1930 on the SAT. She applied on Jan 1, we’re from Maryland. If attending, will major in public policy. There was no mention on the portal of any merit aid.

QUESTION if anyone can help my D has been waiting for some bit with little communication from UD today she got and email first time ever from admissions directed for her stating that she is still being highly considered for the class of 2018 and would hear from them within 2 weeks they appreciate her patience ??? we have no idea what to make out of it its been so long already if they were going to reject her why send an email at this point and I’m just not understanding has anyone else received anything like this in the past

@ miesha5: My S received this email as well and I am guessing this is new since they moved to this “rolling” admission process. To me it just sounds like they might have gathered the ones that weren’t going to make the 8-12 week deadline and sent this out as a courtesy. I have learned a long time ago, don’t read into any of this. Unfortunately, the wait continues :(

ok thanks we are at the 16 week mark

miesha5:

Last year around 3-4 weeks before the defined announced decision date in mid-March UD did send out emails or letters to some students informing them that were soon to hear from UD and that UD was looking for high achieving students to be part of their freshman class and finished the statement with “like you”. All of these students found out later that they were accepted. It sounds to me that the email your D got from UD is somewhat similar but not exactly the same. While no one can say for sure I would interpret the email, at the very least, as being a positive sign. Good luck.

@miesha5 @dogsrthebest D received the same email today but hers said “continuing to receive active consideration”. Not feeling confident if yours said “highly considered”. Really just want to know either way so we can move on.

I"d kill for either email right now! lol! … no email and no acceptance yet… sigh… this is torture!

@miesha5: did the letter say “highly considered” ?
I also recall 4 years ago my D receiving this email now that you mention it and she was ultimately accepted as well. I thought it was odd back then since they were very clear that acceptances would come the end of March but about 3-4 weeks prior she got this email. Pure torture back then as UD was her first choice and the last school she heard from. Didn’t know what it meant back then but once she got accepted it felt great!! Sue hope it means the same thing for S. Fingers crossed!!

My in state son received his acceptance package via US Mail today to University Studies(business undeclared was his first choice). He now has a decision to make but has some time to make it. Interestingly, portal still says “file under review”?

@pgddad: we are in state and had the same thing happened to us. Received the acceptance package in the mail but portal still said “under review”. It eventually changed to say “accepted”. Then changed back to “under review”. Now, the main part of the portal says “accepted” but the right-hand column says application “under review”.

pgddad & others still waiting. S received email saying something about up to 3 more weeks. Portal now says something via mail (but it is under the FAFSA - received docs) so don’t know what that means. And portal still says under review. Are ppl receiving acceptance in mail while portal still says under review - that’s what it looks like pgddad? This is torture. All other acceptances are in, but UD is where his heart is. It is #1. OOS and both parents UD grads.

^ we have been waiting also received same email other day portal use to say under review then like 3 weeks ago changed to in the mail then we got that email on monday who the heck knows but i do know that this is insane and they should give theses kids an answer one way or another my D application was complete nov 8

Hi Miesha5. Yes, same timeframe here. Thank you for sharing you are experiencing same.

We are in state and have 2 UD grads and a current UD student and our daughter applied mid-October so she could avoid the waiting. So much for that strategy! We received the same email about still being " considered ". At this rate our daughter is so stressed out (us too) and she just wants an answer. Our biggest fear now is that our daughter’s major might already be full and she might get stuck in University Studies instead of her Nursing major. This is awful

I swear a- if thus poor kid see one more classmate tweet their acceptance packet from UD I might cry for her and B- after all this if these kids don’t get in what a heartbreak and shame after all this time and agony they were put threw

I did the live chat with Admissions yesterday regarding the fact that son was admitted but portal says “file under review”. The response I got was that they would look into updating the portal but as of this morning it still was “file under review”. I told my son to make sure he does not misplace his acceptance letter(LOL) Best of luck to all still waiting!
