Delaware Class of 2020 Acceptances

My son received a letter on Monday. Applied on 12/28 to computer science and Honors. His letter says they will decide about Honors in March. He attends very competitive all Honors high school, 4.0UW, no rank, 2290 SAT, 780 Physics, 800 Math 2. Very active Eagle Scout, band, other volunteer work, 2+ years working 15 hours a week. Based on other stats I’ve seen, he has an excellent chance, but there are no guarantees and its a big factor for him. Also waiting for merit offer. The EFC says he’s eligible for $10k, which, with Honors, would make UD a very attractive prospect. We are OOS.

Hey aappel just wanted to wish you the best of luck with your admission! I had very similar statistics (exact same SAT score) and was admitted into the class of 2020 at the University of Delaware for chemical engineering. Hope it works out, I wanted to try an ease any anxiety I’m sure you must have by sharing my admission with you, given our similar statistics. @aappel

It appears that a number of individuals have posted that they have been accepted or are awaiting acceptance to chemical engineering. I just wanted to make such individuals aware that chemical engineering is one of, if not the most, rigorous academic programs at UD due to the overall academic ranking of this program nationally. It does have a reputation of being a “weed-out” type of major and nearly 50% of the students admitted to this program as freshman end up switching to another major. Some students choose UD for this major over other colleges they have been accepted to for chemical engineering including Ivy League schools, MIT, Carnegie-Mellon and similar type schools. So the overall competition, even after acceptance is intense. So be fore-warned. You can’t rest on your HS Stats and SAT/ACT scores and expect to do well. You need to dive into things right when you start and give it your best effort. Just trying to be helpful. Best wishes to everyone.

my portal changed, but I’m not sure if its normal for it to update? or if i was accepted? does anyone know why?

My S’s changed too. Not sure what it means…

Update on scholarship… We received his #UDWelcome letter last Monday with no mention of scholarship. I was surprised and concerned about cost but found out from here that money posts to portal later. Good news to report… He checked his portal yesterday and the $10k that the EFC quoted is what he received!!! Now we are waiting for the Honors decision. His stats are well above the average, but anything can happen.

If you find out, please let me know. I’m awaiting my decision from UDel and it is my top choice. Hoping for the best!

I mean, if you find out why the portal changed! Sorry for the vagueness of my first post.

@SALSRL My son’s portal changed but didn’t say “accepted” either. What was the change on your S’s portal?

@acme It added an option to schedule a visit and change his major. We are right at 11 weeks waiting. No contact at all since the initial email saying the application was complete. OOS. Applied Electrical Engineering & Honors. 1990 SAT, 4.2 GPA, 5 APS, all the rest honors. Great EC’s and leadership. Can’t figure out what could be taking so long

@SALSRL That’s exactly what DS got, too, Also Engineering application. His SAT scores lagged in being sent, but initial application was in November and SAT scores have been in for 6+ weeks as well. Good luck to your DS!

@acme Maybe they are getting ready to send out another bunch of Engineering decisions. I think my DS is getting a little annoyed with how long it is taking. Fingers crossed! Good luck to your DS too!

SALSRL:
Did your S list an alternative major on his UD application? OOS competition for specific engineering majors (CE, EE, etc) is very intense and seems to be increasing each year. I suspect UD is at the point of making a number of final decisions but may not have sufficient spaces in a specific restricted major for all highly qualified applicants. They are looking to find out if an applicant would consider an alternative major because overall the stats/info of such applicants would be at a level that UD still would like to have them attend. In Engineering a not uncommon alternative major might be Engineering, unspecified. Perhaps you should email them and ask for an explanation of the portal change and how this change impacts your S specifically. Obviously if your S’s perspective is that it is EE or nothing then this is a moot point. Just my take on things. Good luck.

@Mwallenmd I know he put unspecified as his 2nd choice. I would think that if they wanted an applicant to pick an alternate major, they would have contacted the applicant or at the very least, let them know the portal had changed. We would have never known it had changed if we hadn’t arbitrarily gone in and checked on our own. Seems to be similar to the other post. It would be interesting to know if others with different major choices have experienced the same portal change.

@Salsrl I had my son call just now. The admissions office said everyone’s portal changed to say Campus Visit and Change Major regardless of whether they’re waiting to hear or already accepted, and it doesn’t mean anything. Not sure if that’s good news or bad news for our DS’s.!

@acme Thanks for the update! Hopefully, it is good news for both! Let us know when you hear anything. Fingers still crossed. Are you IS or OOS?

@Salsrl We’re OOS.

  1. Finished my app on January 1st 2016
  2. Didn't apply for honors
  3. accepted into Chemical Engineering
  4. 740 Math, 590 Reading and Writing, 800 Chem subject, 720 Physics Subject and 660 Math II, weighted 4.27 GPA
  5. total of 9 AP courses taken through high school including AP Chem
  6. UD is out of state so tuition is too high to attend for now Herd back earlier than I thought, on February 9th

@acme, @salsrl I thought I was going crazy last night I knew that my D’s portal had changed. This week will make 12 weeks that she is waiting too. She picked undecided as her first choice and fashion merchandising for her second. Hopefully that wait will be over soon!

@udel2020 Good luck to your D!
