I don't have awesome grades but through the naviance website that my school setup, it appeared as though i had good enough grades to get in. Unweighted, my average was an 83.25 but with all my AP classes weighed in it went up to an 88 where Oneonta's average gpa was an 86. The combined SAT was 1055 and mine was a 1020 and the total 2400 was a 1571 and mine was a 1590... If I had applied through HEOP would i have gotten in? And in the rejection letter it states "We would be pleased to consider you as a transfer student after you have successfully completed one year of coursework at another college." What's the point of that? And now that you guys know my grades, what are my chances of getting into SUNY Albany? After getting rejected by Oneonta, I'm sure im going to get rejected from New Paltz. I should also mention that my sister goes to UAlbany and my step dad teaches there. Also, since the march 1st deadline is past, is it too late to apply anywhere else?

High school average: 90.4
Average SAT score: 1137 (Critical Reading/Verbal and Math portions only)
Freshman to sophomore retention rate: 82 percent (national average is 72 percent)

Usually, colleges re-calculate GPA when reviewing applications. Thus, your weighting of your gpa may not fit into the same method that the admission’s office uses.

There is no rhyme nor reason anyone can point to alot of the time with college admissions. I will say that Oneonta is very strange this year. They must have new people making decisions! My son had an 85 average, 1310 SAT’s, and his mother graduated from there. He was rejected but he did get into New Paltz and Albany, so go figure.

Some people will say they are being pickier now and that it is trying to be more selective. Maybe so, but it’s still the same Oneonta. There are also demographic factors that play into admission to public colleges. Sometimes you just don’t fit into the right category even though your grades and test scores exceed the standard.

So you really think i will get rejected from suny albany? And i already applied to potsdam and got in but i do NOT want to go there…if i don’t get into Ualbany idk what i’ll do.

edit:
dunno how that happened but double post

Albanys admissions stats are equal to or greater than either New Paltz or Oneonta and they use “core” calculations on GPA requirements. UAlbany is a reach, but not impossible. I’d certainly ask your step dad for help and for him to contact admissions…and don’t delay.

Potsdam is fine school, which is why I assume you applied there, as are community colleges…and it’s not too late for them. You can always transfer after one or two years.

Raisume, EOP/HEOP has an income qualification but does allow some students to be admitted who did not meet “normal” admission standards. In fact, that is one of the criteria used - they cannot be admissible under normal requirements. There are not a lot of EOP/HEOP slots at each school.

Sounds like Oneonta is not sure you’re prepared for college level work or had a lot of applicants with higher stats this year…not surprising with the state of the economy. But they will have attrition through the summer and throughout the year. That’s why they’re encouraging you to apply as a transfer student after freshman year.

If you aren’t admitted to a 4 year SUNY, look at the articulation agreements the SUNY of your choice has with your local CC/2 year SUNY. Hudson Valley seems to be a decent school and I know several students who started there and gained admission to competitive programs. I know it’s not what you want to hear, but there are options that can work out in your favor so don’t get discouraged!

It will be interesting to see the final figures on applications this year. Anecdotally, I’ve heard a lot of stories about students – who in the past would have been virtual locks for admittance to New Paltz – applying to Oneonta as their first choice or prime back-up this year. Perhaps the OP fell victim to the “Next Hot School Syndrome?”

Hey sk8rmom, I did get accepted into St. Rose and SUNY Potsdam but are either decent colleges? I’m asking you because you are from New York also and I just want a general idea. Also, it looks like it’s not very selective because it accepts 66% of the people that apply (like HVCC).

I really thought I’d get into a college like Oneonta because of a website that my school uses for college bound students (connection.naviance.com). And websites such as usnews and ■■■■■■■■■■ were giving me the idea that i would easily get in. Guess i was totally wrong. But i also presume it was because of how LATE I finished my application. (Finished the supplemental dec 11th and didn’t get my letter of recommendation until the middle of February)

SUNY Potsdam is a fine school. Have you visited the campus yet? Don’t put too much emphasis on the rankings–a lot of that has to do with public relations, politics, and weird methodology used to set the rankings. I really think you will get more of the traditional college experience at the SUNY school over St. Rose (tends to be a commuter school). Often times, kids start at Potsdam thinking they’re going to transfer to a different school after a year or so, but they end up liking it so much that they end up staying there for all 4 years.

Don’t confuse a good school with a popular school. A student can get as good an education at Potsdam as any other of the SUNY schools. Potsdam is well known for its Crane School of Music and the Potsdam Miracle.

The USN Tier rankings are a quantitative screen…and there is no Tier 2…go figure.

Saint Rose is also a fine school if you prefer the Albany Area.

I bieleve what makes a school a good school is the student body and your fit…Where will you be able to be happy, do your best work, and get the courses that YOU need. Try to focus your attention on the positive aspects and work towards your goals.

Oneonta had alot of applicants with very high stats the year. Their scholarships were awarded to kids with a minimum 94 GPA above 1200 two part SAT’s. I think they are trying to increase their rankings.

We’re still waiting to hear from Oneonta here. It’s my son’s first choice. He applied to 9 schools and heard from 8 and got accepted to all 8. He did early action at Oneonta but they said they were unable to make a decision at that time and wanted his mid year grades. They’ve had the whole application and supplementals, etc since November and the mid year grades going on 3 weeks now. Still waiting to hear!

My son’s stats: GPA 86 (prior to Senior year where he got a 95 average both quarters so far) SAT 1200 (math & verbal only) ACT 28. He has interesting extra curriculars related to his major.

Already accepted at: Potsdam, Oswego, University of Tampa, University of New Haven, Keene State, Plymouth State, Cazenovia, and Emmanuel in Boston.

Good luck to you OP…I think Potsdam is a fine school if you do not get accepted to Albany. I promise you, it will all work out in the end and I hope you will enjoy your college experience no matter where you decide to go.

Raisume, you’re probably correct that the late app + popular school decreased your chances. I haven’t been to Potsdam for many years but would encourage you to visit. I used to visit friends at SUNY and Clarkson and they seemed happy with the town and have all had successful careers since. There was a bit too much snow for my liking and it was fairly remote…but people have different tastes. As others have advised, rankings are much less important than your individual needs/feelings. In other words, if they have a good program for your field and you feel that you would be happy and successful there, then feel free to rank it as #1!

Friends son with pretty bad grades was accepted at Albany and rejected from SUNY colleges he applied to. He is now a Senior at Albany. At the time, my friend had her son send in the deposit immediately before they caught on that his acceptance was liekly a mistake!!

The reason I mention this is that most of the time a match is just that, but not a sure thing.

By the way, Potsdam is fine. My closest friend went there as an undergrad and then on to Ithaca for grad school. She is quite intelligent. She picked Potsdam based on cost and that it was furthest from LI. Take about wanting to leave home!! She loved it. You can be happy anywhere and get a good education at many schools, Potsdam included. Wherever you choose, you can transfer if you are not happy.

Do not be disappointed. Just look at your acceptances, they are all that matter in the end.

Hey, I just wanted to say that i got my acceptance letter from suny albany today!. Thanks for all the information guys! I also found out that my friend who had sat scores in the 1700s also got rejected from suny oneonta (and another with the same scores got rejected from new paltz)
