DONT WANNA Go To NYU !!!!!

Hello.
Last December, I received a admissions letter from NYU College of Arts and Science for Early Decision. That moment, I was crying in joy that I was accepted to a college.
But then, today, March 14 2006, I also got a admissions letter from Washington U in St. Louis. This one was a regular decision.

Now I have come to a despair and a dillema. Though Ive already paid the ED deposit for NYU, I don't wanna to go NYU, instead, I would like to go to Wash U, first because it is a much better school for me because im pursuing biology major, and second, it has somewhat lower tuition than NYU.

Would it be possible for me to go to Wash U? Could I get a lawyer and start a case? (using the expensive tuition of NYU as a defense) Someone please give me an answer!!!

You were supposeed to have withdrawn your app to all other schools upion receipt of an ED acceptance. Aside from the ethics of not having done that, it would have saved you just this sort of quandary. Also consider the illogic of deciding you can afford a lawyer to get you out of an agreement but cannot manage the tuition for NYU although WUSTL fits your budget. Sounds like you got bad advice a few months ago, or else ignored the rules.

You must reject WUSTL's acceptance and fast before you get in trouble.

Read the agreement you signed when you declared Early Decision. Failure to abide by said agreement may cause both schools to rescind their acceptance.

i hate when people do this.

Hmmm...
so am I legally binded to NYU or just on the contract letter?

to be honest, my father would be almost broke if they pay all 210K for my tuition for 4 years in NYU.

Living expense, if I live in St. Louis, would be alot less.
Also, my father doesn't have a job (he is living off from enough savings he made many years ago)

My mom has almost no money in her savings neither.

BUt its not that I didn't look up NYU tuition before I applied. My father does have enough savings to send me to NYU, but then he would have no money left for himself. also my parents are divorced.

the thing is, I find Wash U to save some money for my father himself.
my mom works for her father and almost lives off from her parents.

You are legally binded. The tuition for NYU and WUSTL is comparable. You can't argue "YEA I CAN PAY 190K BUT NOT 210K".

Especially since NYU will just give you 3k or so in loans if you try to hire a lawyer and waste even MORE money trying to do this. The publicity may also cause both schools to rescind you as WUSTL finds out that you didn't withdraw when you got into NYU ED.

If you didn't look at tuition, THAT'S YOUR BAD. You understood ALL terms when you signed the ED contract.

To summarize:
1. You signed the contract
2. The tuition between the two school is comparable. NYU, even if it loses, can just give you a few thousand in loans to make you come.
3. Getting a lawyer means you can afford NYU.
4. The attention may get you rescinded from both schools because you did not withdraw when you were accepted ED. This is also IN THE CONTRACT THAT YOU SIGNED.

PS: Living expense is not an issue here. Read this:
"Are freshmen required to live on campus?

If your parents or legal guardians live more than 25 miles from Washington University, you are required to live on campus as a freshman.
If your parents or legal guardians live within 25 miles, you are encouraged, but not required, to live on campus your freshman year. "

I'm pretty sure you'd be forced to live in a dorm.

LOL
okay so its best for me to keep things secret.
I will just go to NYU then.

But, do you think after an year or two, I would be able to transfer to Wash U?
how different is it from applying as a freshmen if I kept my GPA up like A's?

Yes you can transfer if you want. Also, where did you get the tuition information?

NYU Tuition and fees: $31,690
Room/board: $11,790

Washington University:
Tuition and fees: $32,042
Room/board: $10,064

I'm pretty sure you can transfer if you continue a good GPA at NYU.

I got the NYU tution from my acceptance mail.
because i am an international student, I had to prove that i had sources of money to pay the tuition (which is a form that i have not yet sent)

this is from the official tuition list from NYU
the tuition is $30,144 ; room and board is $ 8000 at minimum (means that with 8K you have to live in a crappy dorm distant from the campus)
living expense is $ 10,000. (or 1,500 per month)
Also note that the tuition increases 5% each year (explained in the official letter)

In terms of a students potential, would I be able to transfer without much difficulty since i was accepted to WashU?
I got 2040 SAT, 4.11 GPA and all other EC's.

Depends on your NYU GPA. Keep it up and I think you can transfer easier than other people who were not accepted to WUSTL pre-freshman year.

Your biggest problem is not having mentioned the $$ trouble to NYU immediately after getting excepted. Not withdrawing the other applications is a no no that will get you reamed on this board.

So a few questions. Did you know you had to withdraw the other apps and just choose not to do so? It sounds like maybe engkish is not your first language, did you and your family understand the ED committment?

If there were misunderstandings, I think a school like NYU with kids clamoring to get in may well be gracious in letting you off the hook. If schools do this too often, ED will be meaningless, so your story would have to be REALLY good.

thanks for the advice and encouragement.
it definately hardened my decision to NYU (or should I say, I had no choice :p)

so Wash U (or other colleges) takes account in transfer students whether they were accpeted or not in pre-freshmen year? thanks for the notice.

Actually the biggest problem is that WUSTL/NYU both have comparable costs. His only defense is basically "I don't want to go". If he had gotten a scholarship or something from WUSTL, he can make the cost argument.

Also, when you sign the ED contract, YOU SAY YOU UNDERSTAND everything.

Finally, imagine how bad he would feel if he had his application rescinded from both schools because he didn't withdraw when ED'd and is now trying to get into WUSTL. Make sure you understand the risks of even making a move as I know people who have gotten rescinded and forced to attend state schools after breaking attempting to escape from ED contracts.

kksvolt,

You might want to consider getting a part-time job to allay some of the cost of attending NYU. Also consider academic loans if you have to. But don't expect WUSTL to be that much cheaper than NYU. It isn't.

Actually,
I applied to other colleges after I got the acceptance letter from NYU; it said I had to withdraw all other applications in three weeks, and I applied to few colleges for RD on the last day of the three week withdrawal dates given.

I had no other colleges that i applied when I got the NYU acceptance letter. My misunderstanding is that I withdrawal in three weeks meant that I couldn't apply to any colleges as well.
Though Ive already made my decision to stay with NYU, out of curiosity, does schools like NYU which has a crowded applicant pool allow applicants to drop their ED admissions?

No private school will allow applicants to get out of ED unless there are substantial financial reasons (EFC is too low) and even then they will give loans out to work with you.

I've never heard of internationals getting out of ED's because they do not get financial aid and are expected to pay full price no matter where they go. This makes the tuition/fees about the same especially since you cannot live OFF CAMPUS and must live in a dorm.

State schools are more lenient in letting you get out of ED's and I've heard of a couple kids get out by writing letters and lobbying hard.

Note: Don't hold me to the state school info.

thanks for the advice:)

my hope is that colleges dont find about my "illegal" applying and rescind me from everywhere since I am determine to go to NYU now :p

May Manhattan be my comfy home!

You applied ED without fully understnading the rules or choosing to ignore them because you figured they didn't apply to you. Then you have the nerve to apply to schools AFTER you were accepted ED to NYU. BTW-How did you get into either school with such intellectual prowess?

its not that I didn't think they didn't apply to me.
just a misunderstanding of the rules.
and I am not changing my decision to NYU (as you see I was advised along with the posts above.)
So stop making me a criminal or some sort please.

You are not a criminal-I am just incredulous that a seemingly very bright young person would not think long and hard about the ramifications of applying anywhere ED. Didn't your guidance counselor or parent go over this with you?
