Dressing Young (Part 1)

I have to ask; do you need someone to pull them off for you?

Oh yes, the Fabio-like men who are drooling over you!

PS - really shouldn’t post after two glasses of wine!

BB - yup, D reported (unhappily) that yes, indeed, it snowed in Boston today. That school in Southern CA that was her 2nd choice is lookin’ pretty good right now ;)

Only had time to stop in one shoe store today to look for boots - Shoe Carnival - walked out with nothing. Basically they had either high heeled/high calf boots or snow books - nothing in-between!

I don’t mind browsing online for shoes, but to purchase them I need to see them in person - and on my own feet!

^^^endless and zappos have free shipping–both ways! I have been known to order 2 sizes and return 1 or both.

D2 just came into my room, dressed in a very short sequin, black/brown dress (Free People’s new sequin dress), with high heels and a pin stripe jacket over her dress.

I was like, “wow, you look great.” “Wait, is that my pin strip jacket that’s part of my suit?” She said, “I am not saying it is, but if it was, you haven’t worn it in a long time.”

She had the jacket’s sleeves rolled up a bit, with a sequin dress barely 4 inches below the jacket, AND leather fingerless gloves. She is wearing that to her Sweet 16 party.

workinprogress, yes, a Fabio-like man has been known to help me with boots, zippers on the back of my dresses, etc. especially if they need to be taken off. ;)

PRJ, the funny thing is that my D’s second choice school was in sunny SoCal as well. My kid is a big fan of snow, but not the wet kind!

oldfort, if my kid puts on my clothes, I take it as a huge compliment! That’s one hot jacket you must’ve got! Happy birthday to your D!

Noooooooooooooo! The
worst
look
ever
Do you remember when women wore these with regular shoes and you could see the stirrups? Shudder Okay, I did it a few times :o have the photos and it is nasty!

Please, no stirrups!!

Nooooo! No stirrups, please!!!

Everything 80s just makes my eyes itch.

When we were doing a College visit to Drexel last week three of the people on the tour had the skinny jeans and Ugg boots. None of them looked good. If you have long legs and are not overweight, it’s probably a good look, otherwise please avoid this trend. Not for fluffy people.

I just returned some jeans that I thought were just straight legged but actually verged on skinny. The problem was that the dumb dressing room didn’t have one of those mirrors that allow you to see the rear view. Once I had a look at my butt in the mirror at home ( kind of a denim mermaid look) they went right back. It reminds me of when the Levi store opened here and they advertised that you could order jeans custom made to fit your body. I don’t want the jeans to look like me, I want to look like the jeans.

With this thread in mind, D and I had so much fun at the mall yesterday! We saw one 50ish woman who we decided looked like a court jester. Her bold patterned blazer had these “gills” flapping out of the upper arm/shoulder area. It was hilarious. This was paired with jeans covered with gold specks. Really a bad look.

D is actually having some trouble finding fun, stylish clothes which aren’t too “out there”. She’s 25 and a Divinity grad student. She feels that python print leggings are NOT the look she wants, and everything in the “younger” stores right now is VERY sparkly! She got some cute cords at Ann Taylor Loft and some cardigans at Express.

I bought two of the Express cardigans (really cute- pretty colors, close fitting with pretty buttons), some cords at Gap (orange- I know
I like the odd colors), a black sweater dress at JCrew which will be great with bright tights and some black ankle boots that are incredibly comfortable (by Sofft) at Walking Company.

In the midst (I hope!) of weight loss, I decided I had to get some tide-me-over clothes in my current size, because I was looking plenty frumpy in pants 2 sizes too big. But I don’t want to break the bank. I had to be in a Sears store for another reason and walked past the Lands End section. I haven’t worn Lands End in 20 years, but I stopped. I found some well fitting boot leg jeans on major sale: 2 pairs cost me $39! They fit surprisingly well–no mom-jean going on except that they are cut high enough that I don’t have to worry about “coverage” when I sit down.

^I noticed in the newest LLBean catalog (I live in LLBeanland) that there is a section with smart, not to the waist pants with bootleg cuts that are really nice (in fact both D’s liked them) plus the usual section of higher waisted pants that they have always had. Being long waisted I can’t wear those but I really do like the new ones. Some are just below the waist and a few others are not quite to the hip. Check it out (of course, not on sale, bummer). I just started running again (YAY) and am waiting awhile to buy anything new
so far just looking. Congrats on your success!

“Denim mermaid look” -ROFL!!!

mafool, great find! When I find reasonably-priced jeans that fit me as you described, I buy them! DD tried on my latest pair of David Kahn jeans, and said, “Wow, mom, can I have them - they do not make me look like a plumber when I bend over or sit down!” A 19-year old craving mom’s jeans? Unbelievable! But then again, this is the kid who prefers The Limited to American Apparel :)

MOWC – I love Sofft shoes. They have really comfortable pumps for work wear. I love Express stuff too – it’s fitted, but usually not garish and seems like ‘classic w/a kick.’ I’ve gotten some sweater seats at yard sales (!) – some w/the tags on, and they are my favorites.

I’m a fan of Sofft boots as well! I could so win the infamous Moscow high-heel race in my Sofft ankle boots! I’ve been training hard on the streets of Seattle chasing after Metro buses
