Dressing Young (Part 1)

Sofft fans: do they run pretty true to size? I see an ankle boot I want to order…

oh…some of those sofft shoes and boots look really cute and they carry my size. Not crazy about the prices!
Re skinny jeans…the butt view is a concern, yes. That’s why I want a nice long black v-neck sweater! So the long legs show but not any key deficiencies.
Lots of talk about middles here. Not bad here but not great either. Anyone try those jeans with the built in panels? Or are they horribly uncomfortable and a waste? I do admit just THINKING about them makes me feel old…

Bunsen - I recently found a pair of David Kahn’s, never worn, at a Goodwill. I had never heard of the label, but they look and feel great, I am now a fan!! Someone let me know which stores usually carry them…

I hear you about the price. Here is MY rationalization: I will wear a pair of ankle boots all winter for 2 winters or more, and I am tired of having sore feet. Buying one pair of stylish and comfortable boots probably saves money, because I am not driven to replace them when I get fed up with having sore feet.

mafool - most of my shoes are size 9 (occasionally, an 8 1/2 fits). Both of my pairs of size 9 Sofft boots fit me perfectly (with a room for a thin cashmere-blend sock). I would call their width medium-wide. Now I want this: [Sofft Orlena at Zappos.com](<a href=“Sofft orlena black velvet sheep nappa + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com”>Sofft orlena black velvet sheep nappa + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com) I’ll look for them on the clearance shelf at DSW next spring.

Rachcha, check your local Nordstrom Rack, I’ve had good luck finding David Kahn jeans at the Rack. They will cost you more than what you’ve paid at Goodwill, for sure, but $50 for a pair of perfectly fitted jeans is a good price, IMO.

I was at Nordstom Rack not too long ago. I confess to being confused by the sizing of some of the cool jeans! So…say I wear a size 10: what size is that? 32? what does the number mean? Back in my college days, we bought jeans sized for guys, and a 30 would have been something like an 8 (I think). Of course I’d have to try them on, but I don’t know where to start!

If we ever get a Nordstrom (or Nordstrom Rack) here I will die and go to heaven!!! In the meantime I will have to wait until I get to one during my travels…(I mapped those out with the college visits last year - King of Prussia, Short Hills, etc etc)

i found nordstrom black leather pumps last week at the thrift store. new condition. i paid $4.00…
i did my Happy Dance over finding such a bargain!

this is kind of an offshoot question of the “dressing” young…but is about hair…

if you have wavy hair and you get a “relaxer” or “chemical straightener”…does that take years off your age ? i noticed someone who had that done and she does look younger to me. what do you think?

^^^
My friend had a keratin treatment at her salon and her hair DID look better. Straight and smooth…kind of like my son’s girlfriends hair. Not bad. Cost a lot though and I think it only lasts 4 -6 months!

I think the youthful look comes from the added shine, too, after keratin. Or is that my imagination?

I’ve got thick, frizzy/wavy hair and had a Keratin treatment before my D’s wedding in June. I loved it, but I didn’t do as well as your friend–my treatment lasted about two and a half months. As much as I loved the look, $200 (which is what I paid) every two months is more than I want to spend, since I’m already spending money for color/highlights.

toneranger: by jeans with built-in panels, do you mean to hold your tummy in? If so, look at Not Your Daughter’s Jeans. I LOVE mine. They have just enough extra stretch through the tummy and rear to firm things up, but they are not uncomfortable at all. I just took my new black skinny ones on a trip last week and wore them almost every day. They are well worth the money. I think they are much more flattering than other jeans.

They aren’t low-rise, though. They come right up to your actual waist, since the jeans are holding in your tummy. I hope that isn’t considered “mom jeans.”

So many love the Not Your Daughters Jeans, but I find them the least flattering on me. The are so high waisted which I don’t find flattering. I actually think they make me look bigger than the low cut jeans.

hmom, same for me. I actually look best in certain styles of Gap jeans, which are high enough not to show too much, but low enough to make my rear look smaller. And with a coupon, they’re relatively inexpensive.

Although I generally prefer low rise bootcuts, I think a higher rise is called for in the new skinnies because unless they fit absolutely perfectly around the waist and back, there is definitely more risk of exposure. I think because the legs of skinnies fit so tightly and there isn’t much movement with your movements that when you bend over in skinnies the pants don’t always come with you!

On another note, does everyone hem their skinnies or do you kind of let them scrunch up a little or a lot depending on the heel you’re wearing?

That’s a problem with the skinnies - if you wear them with a heel, you need a different look than with flats.

My issue with many lower-rise jeans:the pockets are placed so low on the butt! I think that if the pockets are centered lower than, oh, mid-curve on my butt, they make me look saggy.

Amen! Why do they do that? Some are so low that they are even unflattering on my not saggy at all Ds.

bookiemom…thank you. I checked them out but I don’t think my body would look so hot in the high rise jeans. I generally prefer low cut…not super low but low… jeans with a belt.
Belly is not so bad but I wish the but looked better! Hate those low pockets!
So, now I get it, the panels require high cuts.

The high school musical this year is Footloose. I’ve never seen the musical, but the movie - made in 1984 - was on TV over the weekend and we watched it. Here’s a test for you: Watch Footloose and if you still wear your hair like any of the characters, it’s time for a change. (Works with Full House, too.)
