Driving

i feel like such a loser because i am a junior and still do not have my license. compared to almost all my friends who do.

problem is, driver's ed isn't free here (i moved recently to hawaii from PA) and its almost $400- $500. my friends are (their parents are) loaded- mine is not. so i was just going to wait until i was 18, (in like 8 months) to get my license and skip driver's ed. but i don't know anymore because i kind of feel an "indirect" pressure to get my license.

Do you have your permit yet? If not, it would be pointless to try now. I know a lot of people who don't drive and they are seniors this year. You'd be surprised at how many people wait until they turn 18 to get their license because of the drivers ed costs and driving restrictions.

no i dont have my permit

Why do you have to take drivers-ed? Hardly anyone where I live does... just take the test, have your parents teach you for a year, and take another test for your license :)

Yeah...I don't think there's anything you'd get in a driver's ed course that your parents couldn't teach you. Just make sure to pick up a copy of your state's driving manual and read up on any unusual laws (i.e., in certain states it is illegal not to change lanes to avoid stopped police cars...my mom found out the hard way :)).

having my mom teach me for a yr will b longer...and i will be going to college in about a year so wont i have to get a license all over again when i go to college (in another state)

Why don't you take it at your school? I live in Hawaii also and at school (its an after school course for about 2 weeks) it only costs about 20 bucks.

you live in oahu- i live on the big island
.....thats a huge difference!

also, my school is a private charter, therefore -no driver's ed at my school. at a local public school it is still $400

That sucks =[

yea, i know

in MA, drivers ed is now $600 and it is required that those under 18 take drivers ed before getting one's license. We have really strict laws those because, well, we have very aggressive/bad drivers.

i just saved money and got my license in Nov because it is more convenient for me to be able to drive and in the long run it saves you 10% on insurance having taken drivers ed.

Dude, don't even bother. Seriously, my cousin was 22 when she got hers and I'm probably going to wait that long too. Do you really want to pay $400-500 because of peer pressure (and higher insurance because you're in high school)? This is assuming you don't want to drive yet. If you do, driver's ed does give discounts on insurance.

Seriously just until you turn 18. There's no reason to take drivers ed now (besides the insurance discount--for a similar discount you could take a driving improvement course (mine was at the police department and was $45)). I think that you won't have to retest when you go to a new state, you'll just have to pay the license processing fee which isn't that expensive.

just get it when u turn 18 it will b cheaper and don't wory about the presure from your friends or who ever.

but driving is so fun...=]

the few, the proud!

eh, driving isnt that fun after a while. but thats prob cause im not that good of a driver so its stressful sometimes lol.

In NC, drivers ed is completely free.

i'd put up with the drivers ed, but i couldnt transfer my permit from PA to GA. so if i were to get drivers ed now, i wouldnt be eligible for a license until after my 18th bday, which would be a waste of time since you dont need it when youre 18.

Driving is overrated. I do drive though, but the expenses and everything. Plus, everyone wants a ride.
