Duke Class of 2017 RD Discussion

Er, I think you misread. I was criticizing his comparison of race based discrimination in the USSR to that in the the USA against whites. It’s laughable.

I know very well that adversity isn’t a black thing and never suggested otherwise. The bulk of my adversity wasn’t race-based, anyhow. :/

@alexiss - I don’t disagree with your view. I’ve been very impressed with your passion and I wish you the best. I’m sure you will be a winner. My issue with Philovitist is he has on several occasions made his point around tolerance and understanding around his sexual orientation which I totally agree with. But for tolerance to work it has to be a two way street.

okay now I’m missing your point

That was honestly quite rude philovitist to assume just because someone is white he or she hasn’t had adversity and your condescending comment about hardships for whites in America. Criticize the comparison if you like but there is no need to go the other way and throw back rude comments towards whites. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

i NEVER CLAIMED THAT WHITES FACE DON’T ADVERSITY I WAS JUST MOCKING HIS SELF-VICTIMIZATION

Damn.

10 char

Wow watchmaster64! Pretty hateful and it appears way off base about @latinom… From an earlier post of his/hers :

“2400 Valedictorian - chance me?
I’m new on CC. I’m a senior in high school, applying right now. I have a perfect SAT (not superscored, but second time taking it) and perfect GPA with the most difficult classes available at school. I have three major leadership positions, and involvement in 10+ clubs, four of which are competitive, for four years. I also have medium proficiency (not extremely impressive or anything) in piano. I have 14 years of dance experience too including solo, group, and choreography. Race is considered Asian, but not Indian or Chinese (when they ask you to specify). Possible hook is fluency in 4 languages and major knowledge of 3 more. Sorry that was long! I hope someone answers…”

Did your son have a perfect SAT and GPA (and all the other accomplishments)? Also, you got the race wrong.

“Maybe your son just couldn’t overcome the profound adversity that comes with being white in America like these kids could. It’s too bad.”

Was a rude way to go about that’s all. But Oh well, it’s in the past.

Duke doesn’t even do scholarships for hispanics.

“Profound adversity that comes with being white” explicitly refers to race-based adversity. By definition, that’s the only kind that can ‘come with being white’.

But the idea was more to emphasize the first part of the post than to vindicate AA — the fact that the majority of kids currently at Duke did just fine getting in despite apparently facing discrimination for their whiteness.

His entire post was simply absurd — its impetus, its rationale, and its analogy.

Clearly was a sarcastic comment so that is my point

Rejected – not much more to say other than extremely disappointed and numb.

Actually, fact of the matter is that this is a far more damaging and dangerous comment than what Philovitist said. This is a subversive assumption that the poster at whom Watchmaster directed such racist comments was not qualified for admission, when, quite frankly, they obviously were.

Watchmaster’s comment was an 11 on the 1-10 offensiveness scale, and any member of any minority would respond accordingly, and should respond accordingly.

But, between the two: watchmaster’s obvious racist statement and assumptions, Philo’s defense, lies your covert assumption that this was AA when it was not. You have plenty of work to do on your own underlying beliefs before you worry about “how” another poster is addressing an offensive comment.

@This link (https://shib-external.oit.duke.edu/i...n/UserPassword</a>) in Emc2Fma’s post is not working for me. Is there really a way to check out FA status online?

Agree with poetgrl one thousand times over.

The FA link didn’t work for me either. I realized that Duke had provided this link for decisions in an email, which I don’t know if my daughter used or if it was the computer or browser…but when I used later, and logged on with her password etc., along the top was all sorts of tabs with info on FA which she couldn’t see when she was looking at the letter.

Hope it works for you.

Thanks pacnwmom. It works for me. Do you know if merit based aid, if any, would be mentioned there?

Damn, talk about sass battle.

Anyways, the FA link worked for me, full ride! Will most likely see some of you at Duke next year. ;)

@Alden0611 my understanding of Duke (and I could be wrong) is that most aid is need based. Most of the merit aid is “special” and needs to be applied for early-is more competition/interview based.

Our efc is quite a bit higher than the financial aid calculator said it would be, and a lot higher than other schools, so that is disappointing.

^^Well, this is what I referred to but you are right the merit-based aid is probably very limited (and it says no separate application is needed for consideration):
