EA decisions

Maryland, VT, Washington D.C. and Conn....

^^what I would have expected.....very unrepresented states for Bing....hang in there......I would expect that Florida students will not be getting phone calls; decent alumni representation, therefore, decent # of applicants.....I could be wrong, but we'll see.......

i think you can drive yourselves crazy trying to figure out why some people got phone calls and what, if anything, it means for your chances. it could be something about the applicants warranted a call - something even they may not be able to discern. it may be a matter of which admissions reps have gotten a chance to make phone calls. there is no way you'll be able to figure it out from the few incidents of phone calls you are aware of.

just relax -- until the envelop (or phone call comes) there is no way of knowing.

Rodney, thank you for the glimmering light of hope! I guess we'll just have to wait it out and see...

since when do state schools favor OOS students? hahah this whole admission process is wack

It's cause NY is so broke

SUNYs definitely favor OOS...they barely have any! But keep in mind Bing EA apps were up 50% this year and like 30% the year before and a LOT of kids in NYC who would have only applied to privates are applying to Bing this year because so many parents have lost jobs or income. So a lot of really bright students will get rejected.

Sorry Emp. I really do hope I am wrong and it was just theory. This whole admissions process sucks for lack of a better term. There is no predicting what will happen but I think kids are just applying to more and more schools for the sake of applying. A lot of kids from my school are applying to schools they haven't visited just so they can have as many options as possible. It is not uncommon to ask someone at my small school (180 graduating class) how many schools they are applying to and hear 10+. IMO, that is just ridiculous. It takes away spots from kids who really want to go there- if you see yourself maybe attending that school than by all means, apply but come on now be realistic. Most kids don't understand that kids are taking spots away from others by simply applying "for the hell of it". For example, my best friend applied to Binghamton solely on the basis that its a good school. I asked what he liked best about it and he said he didn't know because he had never visited and its his last choice should his 5 preceding choices not work out. Do mind that we live 45 min from Bing so a visit is within the realm of possibility. And you can say well maybe his top 5 choices are reaches but they are not. Two are SUNY's and 3 are not very selective but nonetheless nice private schools. He has a 92 avg, 1450/1600 on his sats and has great EC's. In another case, a girl I know is applying to 16 schools and applied to Bing because its a good school. No visit, knows nothing about campus, etc. Why am I typing this?? Well, this next week will be very nerve racking and this is the best place to vent. Thanks in advance for reading.

I think a lot more kids are doing things like this and with the economy the way it is, students will be applying to SUNYs out of default but not necessarily attending once they see the aid/scholarships awarded by private schools. This still makes things competitive fro everybody else.

Although the economy is a complete wreck, a lot of private schools (especially "bigname" ones like Harvard) have made it clear they still plan on offering financial aid.

Keep this in mind: In 2007-2008, Binghamton accepted 42% of their applicants, with the knowledge that only 24.5% of those accepted would actually enroll. However, Binghamton has received 50% more EA applications this year compared to last year. This does NOT necessarily mean 50% more total applications -- simply more people may have applied EA over RD this year. Unfortunately, only time will tell. Binghamton expects that their yield rate will be larger than 24.5% this year, which also means that they will accept less people despite more applicants. Don't be shocked if the acceptance rate this year is well below 40%.

We should ALL have EA decisions in the MAIL by next Wednesday, January 21. If you haven't received anything from Binghamton by then, then you should definitely call. Binghamton has made it clear that they don't mail out decisions until January 15. The reports of maybe 20 or so people who have been called or mailed well in advance probably have special circumstances.

The bad news applies moreso to "borderline" applicants who may have been accepted under last year's applicant pool. Although SUNY Binghamton won't become radically more competitive because of the economy, the bar has certainly been raised.. which means that someone who was accepted last year might not be this year.

i agree with sean....a lot of kids are applying to binghampton as a financial saftey..as in if they dont get much aid from other schools there is always bing...i am guily as charged too...the main reason binghampton is on my list is becasue it is so cheap. i did visit the campus and whilst there was nothing wrong with it..there was nothing i liked about it either...very neutral feelings...at this point however i doubt i will be going as i got finiancial aid from other schools that match what i would have to pay for bing, but bing is still not off my list becasue i am terrible at making decisions....

Yeah, I got $60,000- merit based over four years to a small liberal arts school (no idea what I will get need based). So private schools are still dishing out money which means that most kids with the intentions of going to private schools still will but as dancingintherain noted, state schools are a financial safety net.

To markopolo's point, I think if I were applying last year I think I would have gotten in because everything but my ACT score (still within middle 50%-27) is well qualified for Bing. However, this year I am expecting to be rejected simply because I was "borderline" last year.

i think all colleges in general are becoming more selective because that is how our education and society sets it up. People join clubs and activities and service because it "looks good for college." Students sign up for SAT classes and take harder classes for the sake of college. Even if our economy wasn't down the drain, admissions is still going to get harder every year

agree. I have a friend who always says ,oh it looks good for college

binghamton accepted 43% for the class entering the fall of 2006. for the class entering the fall of 2008, acceptance rate was 39% http://www2.binghamton.edu/admissions/pdf/measuresofexcellence.pdf
and you can't really refer to them "knowing" 24.5% would accept -- they didn't "know" what their yield for fall 2008 would be which is why they ended up over enrolled for fall 2008. their expectation of a continued increase in yield will probably result in a further decline in the acceptance rate -- combine that with increase in number of applications (which can also bring down the acceptance rate) plus the fact that budget issues will probably force them to try to be conservative about keeping the class size down (again keeping acceptance rate low) and this could be a really tough year for admissions. but until numbers are released no one really knows for sure.

They have formulas to predict yields. Also Im guilty for applying to bing as a financial saftey althoguht I did visit. Im paranoid my 33 act aint gonna be enoguh lol.

Okay, so now I feel stupid for having a SUNY school as my number one choice, even after getting accepted to a good private school. I applied to two SUNY schools solely for the financial aspect, and had a private school as my safety. I guess that I'm just backwards.

When are we getting decisions?!

yes they do -- and then every so often the formulas are wrong and a school finds itself over enrolled. it happened to binghamton for the class entering this fall. it's happened to plenty of other schools too (not just public ones). the year after it happens, admission rates are usually lowered as the school tries to compensate and figure out what the trend going forward will be.

Yeah, I'm applying for financial reasons too---the only 2 SUNYs I'm applying to are Binghamton and Geneseo because my parents wanted more financial options, in other words, my college fund: nonexistent.

Keleso: Haha, same here. My safety is a private school too (but I have double legacy :) so hopefully that works out.)

So I guess... still no word on decisions. Will people be posting stats/scholarships here when they get them? Please do...

@Willjoyo:Binghamton's page on collegeboard says that students will be notified bY January 15th, but as Markopolo posted Bing makes it quite clear that decisions will be mailed on January 15th...two different sides of a story, and i`m hoping for the first lol
@corettojoe: I know I plan on posting my decision when it comes, and I hope everyone else plans to do the same. Someone will prob make a decisions thread though.
