My son went to National Portfolio Day in DC in December. A few weeks later, he got a letter from MICA saying that his was one of the portfolios that was 'evaluated as acceptable' and that he was being invited to submit his application for early admission. The normal early admission deadline was December 15, but the deadline for this "invitaion only" early admission was January 7th, with decisions being mailed out this week (Jan 31- Feb 4).

My question is this...how legit is this "invitation only" early admission? And if his portfolio was 'evaluated as acceptable' on portfolio day, does that mean we should assume he will get in? I know the wait for an answer won't be much longer, but it's making us both a little anxious.

Any opinions?

I got the same letter after NPD. You don’t even have to submit a portfolio except for merit, so I would think that with good high school records etc. it would mean an acceptance. Thanks for reminding me I should be looking for the decision in the mail - fingers crossed for us both.

NHIA had an early admission date as well, meant that you had a better chance at some of the merit aid.

I wouldn’t take the portfolio acceptance as a certain to be accepted sign, but is the first hurdle.

I got the same thing…and ignored it. There was no way I was going to get my stuff ready by Jan. 7th, but I’m a transfer student so the normal deadline is march 1st. I kind of wish that I had been able to though, waiting until April will be nerve racking.
You do need a portfolio even if you’re not applying for merit, btw.

Since the date is past I suppose it is irrelevant but the application states that if the portfolio was reviewed as acceptable at a NPD then a portfolio needs to be submitted if the applicant is applying for scholarship (would this not suggest that it is not needed if not applying for scholarship?). The MICA website has some sort of typo referring to this so it could be read both ways depending on what you do with the typo. Prior years have the application stating that you need not submit a portfolio after an acceptable review unless applying for scholarship. I submitted a portfolio and met that early date so I am ok either way. For future readers of this thread I would check with admissions before I assumed that a portfolio is not needed after an “acceptable” review at NPD. Still haven’t heard about a decision - a couple days left - I think they said decisions would be sent between the 31st and 4th. Too many schools merging together in my mind…

Still waiting here too. Got a postcard inviting us to come visit the school…Umm…Yeah, that’s nice, but an acceptance letter would have been better…

Any letter for you aerohoot? Nothing here but that postcard you referenced. Is MICA your son’s top choice and have you already visited? I’m waiting for an acceptance before I visit. Off to see Ringling this week, acceptances at SVA, Pratt, CCA and SAIC. Looking to major in illustration. If you don’t mind, let me know when you hear - I guess they could still be mailing out today.

Goodschool - good luck with Ringling this week. At least there won’t be snow! Did you check out MCAD link I posted?

Have you visited SAIC?

Goodschool… We want a FULL report on Ringling.

Hi Goodschool…Just got the mail. Still nothing. MICA is my son’s first choice. We haven’t visited yet either. We currently live in southeast Virginia, so it’s about a 5 hour drive to Baltimore. We will wait for the admission letter before we take the drive. I will let you know when we hear. In the meantime, the teasing continues…Got an email yesterday from the financial aid office at MICA about a scholarship that my son might be interested in applying for. Come on already!

I wish my son would consider Ringling! I love Florida!

^ Looks like MICA is between us - I’m in Boston - my brother is in his second year at UVa. MICA is likely better with money than Ringling - we’ll see. I won’t count on anything in the mail for today then - waiting stinks.

digmedia - Yes - will give a Ringling report when I return!

Yup - nothing in today’s mail. I think the acceptable portfolio puts us in a good place though. Yeah, I got the scholarship email too - not a match for me. Just got the regional scholastic gold key for portfolio not expecting a national award though but I’ll still secretly hope a little.

yea I’m still waiting for my letter too…
but MICA is really good with money, they really try to make the school affordable.
also, if you all get a national scholastic gold key, MICA will basically give you a full ride.
I got a regional one…so I have my fingers crossed for that too… :)

Acceptance package today! Personal note is a very nice touch. Being practical not greedy - when do we hear about$$?!

Acceptance here too!!! My son was really happy with the handwritten note as well. Congrats to all!!

Got my letter too…accepted
As far as money MICA sends theirs out kinda late.
Financial Aid/Scholarship awards are sent out in early to mid-April

Is there an accepted students day for MICA? Didn’t read all the package stuff thoroughly, trying to pack for my trip to Ringling - off to the airport in a few hours! Can’t wait to see grass, and I don’t care if it is brown or green - I’ve forgotten what things look like under all this snow.

I haven’t heard back from MICA yet and I’m starting to panic. I’m from the Philadelphia area, so I feel like my letter should be here by now. I hope this doesn’t mean that I’m going to get a rejection letter. Seems like everyone on this forum has already heard. Is there anyone out there who hasn’t heard yet?

Im from a small town in PA. hazleton. MICA sent me a letter saying i would recieve admission notifications between jan31 to feb4… it is FEB 8 and i still havent gotten anything… im starting to get a little nervous. well im starting to get VERY nervous. i dont understand why i havent gotten anything back. i just want to know if i got in or not.

Rejected. why would MICA invite me to do early decision if they were just going to reject me? they knew my grades/SAT scores from the start. I filled out a form with my info when I visited the school last September. I got my hopes up. They shouldn’t invite people for special early decision if they are just going to reject them. Tactless.
