Economics for leaders

My D also had a PSAT score of 230. we didn’t get an invite AND she was Rejected. The e-mail says ‘we received a high number of quality applicants’. I’m sure the accepted kids are really bright. D took AP Micro and Macro in soph yr. with a 5 in each. she also holds leadership positions at state level. I’m telling her she might be ‘overqualified’ coz she’s disappointed beyond belief! Anyway, not sure what the criteria is. Enjoy the prog if your selected.

Wow! Way more qualified than my son was! Now I really have no idea what their criteria is. I didn’t think his essay was all that great either. Maybe it was the school she chose.

D had a PSAT of 225, but she did not get invited and she got accepted at UW, her 1st choice.

@qtdollie: Dang, your daughter is way more qualified than I will ever be. However I think it has more to do with when you submit your application; I have noticed a trend where the people that send their applications the last minute get waitlisted or rejected. However, the people that submitted their application a month or two before the deadline seemed to get in, so I think the program sites are just on a “first come first served” basis.

EFL was the best summer experience I’ve ever had. The program was fun, and you didn’t feel like you were learning economics the whole time you’re there. They made the lessons so much fun and engaging. There were so many leadership activities, all of which brings you closer to your whole group and your check in group. I still am in contact with my friends from EFL, and I actually just stayed with one of them. The bonds you form when you’re there is probably one that you’ll keep for a looooooooong time.

@ShinyHelloKitty - I literally sent in my application the very night of the deadline (around 9:00 P.M. CST), yet I was still accepted at my first-choice site. Therefore, unless very few applied to the Vanderbilt program, I don’t believe time of submission is of great concern. Of course, the reason I sent in my application so late is because I was working on my essay, and I do think that–in the complete absence of any information besides GPA, geographical residence, and HOBY participation–the essay was the most critical factor.

Sorry for resurrecting a dead thread but is this only for Juniors?

Hey, so I’m applying to do the Economics for Leaders program. Firstly, I was wondering if your choices are factored into your acceptance. I.e. If I apply to some of the lesser-applied to sites are my chances better? If so which ones should I apply to (on the east coast). Also how selective is it, my GPA is ok (about 3.7), how good are my chances? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I went last year and it was really awesome! UCLA’s acceptance rate was around 33%ish, but from there it was less selective. I think UCLA and Cornell were the most competitive.

so eross 61495 where did you end up applying…first, second and third choice?

bumping up an old thread…

If anyone has any essay tips or would be kind enough to pm me their essay that would be awesome! I’m a few hundred words into mine, but I think it could be much better than it is.

I took a lot of AP’s but did not do well in them. Therefore my gpa is around a 3.2. Is there anyway this program can find out about the rigor of my courses?

I got in last year at the Yale program. I was also a sophomore which made my acceptance all the weirder. I did not attend last summer because of a missions trip overseas, but I will be attending next summer. Anyways, the essay is key. You could have a 3.0 and get in over a kid with a 4.0. Really just show who you are in your essay. Talk about leadership and how it shapes who you are and your life. Basically, President of Rotary Interact? Talk about that. Really take whatever defines you as a person or leader and exploit it. This program isn’t super competitive. But for the one I got into I was told that the acceptance rate was around 30%.

Also @love4law:
FTE will not find out about your classes mainly because they really don’t care. You self report your gpa

I wanted to bump this for all of the applicants that are applying to FTE. I got accepted to the program at UCal- Berkeley, which was my first choice. This was my first choice because I’m doing something for the entire month of July and UCal-Berkeley took place in August. Did anyone else apply?

Sorry for bumping an old thread.

Got into Berkeley as well! Hope to see you soon @Hawkace

Got Into Uchicago!!! Somebody start a facebook group or something. I’M EXCITED!!!

I got into Berkeley too! Should be a blast. Who’s ready to paaartay?

In at UChicago! I look forward to meeting you! @Love4Law

Is it possible to change the location you have been accepted too?
