ok so i got the notification that i moved onto the state level at around 430 and then my dad got a call around 9 from the state that i moved onto nationals!!!!!!!!!!! but idk about any money from the state. still, are we guaranteed money if we moved onto nationals? like at least the 1K a year x4?

no idea...congrats on your news! It would be great to be guaranteed something!
We'll know sometime in April!

Congrats, Mesquite!!! Info from last year - on the assumption they have not changed things - only 500 brochures are advanced to the national level.

Each state has a set number they are allowed to advance, based on # of members in that state and amount each state contributes to the scholarship funds. Larger states with lots of lodges advance more brochures (I was in California, and I recall they sent 60+ to national). If you go to this site: Elks National Foundation , you can scroll down, enter your state, and see how many national winners there were from your state last year. They posted the 2008 list about two weeks before I got my letter, so I was able to find my name (as a winner!) before I was notified - that was exciting!

In CA, there were no awards (at least not for me!) at the state level for those who were advanced to national - though there MAY have been awards for high-scoring brochures that did not advance - I don't know about that. Other states may have state- level awards.

From the pool of 500 that do advance to nationals, they choose the scholarship winners. Last year, if you made it to nationals, you received at least the $4,000 over 4 yr award.

GOOD LUCK!!! SO exciting!

LaVie, my DS got a call from the WestPalm office saying that he was advancing to Nationals...that's how we found out! They told him 5 boys, 5 girls...That's really all I know. He did not ask too many questions unfortunately and the call was very short!

I live in California and the Chairman of the Central District offices said this year there was money for advancing from district to state, so I'm guaranteed at least some little prize this year.

I'm STILL waiting for the notification from the state. It seems like you're all getting calls, so I guess I'll stay by my phone or email over the next few days.

Congrats to mesquite though! Haha you were panicked about not even receiving notification a while ago and now you're in nationals.

hahaha yeah Crystal, it is pretty ironic now that i look back on it. I hope you make it!!! at least i have books paid for now at whatever school i go to.

anyone from maryland heard anything yet?

anybody from LA heard anything?

hey im from PA and i was actually surprised to see a thread on this scholarship...i received a letter around the 12th saying that i moved onto the state level of judging...if i didnt hear back by now, is it most likely that i didnt make it to the national level? also does anyone know if PA gives out local or district money, i didnt receive any if they do.

anyone from mass here anything?

OMGOMGMGOMGOMFG GAHHHHHHHH

I got into nationals! And ALKDKFSE I got $3500 for moving onto the CA-HI State level and $200 from my district and I had NO idea about those until now! And GAHHH IM SO HAPPY

Still bouncing around in my room! ^___^ Now I know I'm at least guaranteed $3700 and $1000 per year ($7700 GAHHH THATS SO MUCH MONEY)

I didn't move on to nationals, but I got a fair amount of money : )
Does anybody know what we should do with the reporting and such?
I mean, it's going to be a hassle to have to report the money to every single college every time we receive an award, so do we wait until we get acceptance letters and then send the updates to the schools?

Yeah that's what I plan on doing. I mean, if you look at the letter, it says something like "You have up to a year to cash this in. If not, then you will not receive the award". So you have plenty of time to decide which college you want to send that report to.

P.S. how much did you get and from what state? I'm just curious as to how the people from other states fared off.

I didn't even get notified... what is going on with NJ, man!

DS did not ask the Elk who called if there was additional money tied with going from State to Nationals, so we have no idea...have not gotten a letter past the first local letter and an invite to a dinner in DS honor in May.

Technically, this is the first formal contact Elks had with me, so it was listed everything I received on a letter from the CA-HI Elks offices.

I think you should expect a 2nd letter though. That form for cashing in the money should be sent to everyone so they can send it to the college to verify that the recipients are going and need the money.

Crystal: How do you know you receive $3500? Does it say in the letter? Son got a letter from CA-HA too, it only says that he'll get $200 from his local lodge, but no mentioning of the $3500. So moving to national will be at least $1000 per year? BTW, son is from the Bay Area too, we live near San Mateo though. Good luck to you.

I haven't gotten anything since the end of January, telling me I advanced past the district round.

The boy who one the whole contest (most valuable scholar, $60K) was from my lodge!
so I think it was very competitive this year in my district...I hope I get SOMETHING. :)

I think I remember his stats, if anyone is interested...

@ jomudd88:

Well that's interesting. It said in the letter I got a state scholarship worth $3500 and a district one worth $200 right in the second paragraph. I live in the East Bay and sent my app to the Walnut Creek Lodge.

I was told that moving on to state guaranteed some money, but was not told how much. And about the nationals $1000, a guy who went to nationals last year said in a previous post one or two pages back that the $1000 renewable is a minimum once you reach nationals.

Congrats to your son though!

Crystal: Thank you for the info. Good news for you: I believe you are one of the top winners from CA, that's why you won $3500! I checked the Elks National site and found there were around 70 kids advanced to national last year, so you have a good chance to win more than the $1000 per year! I remember you from the Stanford forum; did you get in Stanford early? Son was deferred... I also remember someone saw pictures of you and thought you are really cute. Where can we see these pictures? Congrats to you. You are such a wonderful gal.
