ELKS scholarship

ahhh man, still haven't heard anything back from new jersey.

*won.

I am an idiot.

Woah, woah, woah, back up?

WHO saw pictures of me? And yes, I was on the Stanford forum (I didn't apply SCEA though), but I'm sure I didn't leave any comments on CC that could have directly linked to any pictures. Maybe through facebook, but that's only if you did a good search.

Anyway, back to the topic of this thread -- Statistically, no I don't think anyone has a good chance of winning more than $1000 per year. With 480ish awards given to that amount and only 20 people (and, mind you, only 10 girls and 10 guys) getting any higher award, chances are most people will only get the $1000 prize.

kmac, I second that. I'm from NJ and haven't heard anything...

I can third that lol...emailed the state director person but did not get a response

=[ for NJ

While you wait, how's the weather over there for you guys? Been hearing on the news about that storm...

OMG so nice over here in Central Jersey right now! It's 70 degrees...!

haha i started this thread yet nv posted..
so i didnt make it to nationals but i got 800 from state (CA) and 400 from district
not too bad since i didnt find out about the scholarship until one day before it was due..

just wondering.. how much does one's financial situation count? bc my parents gave me the wrong estimates so i ended up putting a couple thousand over..

im from the LA area in case pl waiting in SoCal were still waiting on letters

^ It counts, but not enough so the couple thousand would eliminate you... I think.

That's still really good. I hope I get something :(

Eh, it shouldn't count for much. I think my income was overestimated by about 2000 or so, but it's still pretty low .__.

I mean, if you see like 30,000 and 35,000, it still kinda looks the same. Only if it's like 30,000 and 60,000 might should it look like a big difference.

@monmonx24: I DID get to nationals but I only got $700 from advancing from state (CA) to national and i don't think anything from district.. any reason for that (as in, why did i get to advance but get less money)?

thanks!

P.S. Not ungrateful or complaining or anything (700 +1000 is awesome!), just wondering how it all works

Haha kinda weird. One person (monmon) getting 800 from State but wasn't given advance to nationals, while the other person (azn4eyes) got 700 and was given advance to nationals.

Only reasoning I can think of is just preemptive thinking -- as in knowing since they were sending azn4eyes off to nationals that he/she would get more money as a result and could receive maybe a 100 less in state awards and gave monmon the 800.

But then again, it would only happen if they were just comparing you two. I bet there were many other factors (or specific ones they were looking for) they put in while doing the state judging.

Dang, I'm really surprised though I got $3500 from state (CA). I'm not trying to be pretentious or anything, but I really thought everyone who moved onto nationals got that amount.

^ No, it depends on the specific state that you are from. If there is a lot of funding for that state, then you get more money.

i didnt get any money from the state when i moved up to nationals.

@ neethus -- All 3 of us were from CA though. (azn4eyes, monmon, myself)

^ Oh, I see. That's a bit odd... maybe it depends on the region? No idea, lol.

jomudd, you a creeper! >_>

^ HAhaha glad to know I'm not the only one scared. After that, I deleted a bunch of facebook posts that could have led to my identity. >.>

Oh yeah btw, on the acceptance forms (the yellow ones where you have to send it to the financial aid counselor at the college or whatever), do you guys see any identification number right next to your name at the bottom?

I was talking to my parents this lunch and they were convinced the number means placing at the state judging. I personally think it's just a form number. Mine says FFFF001 or something like that.

it might just be like that crystal. mine says somethinga long the lines of m0007. I think F is female and m is male and the nubmer means placing
you placed 1st for females, thus the 3.5k
i places 7th for males, thus the .3k

actually, that doesnt make sense (the money part at least, because if you placed higher then you would go to nationals and the higher you place the more money you would think you would get - bad grammar)...

I'm not sure. My conclusion is: that ID means sex/placing. However, placing is independent of monetary reward (thus, the me vs. monmon dilemma)
