@caleegalee : Oxford is need aware. The Atlanta campus admissions is not. But no doubt all school who claim need-blindness are not dumb. They have markers from which they can tell. And places that host any number of interviews can also use those. Legacy is also likely to correlate. Either way, Emory does not look directly at financial data. There are also internal documents where they explicitly mention being need blind and needing to stay that way.
This is from the Emory admissions website. There is no reason to question this, but I don’t know if they include Stafford loans in these totals. Even if they did, the average student is still getting close to $40K in grants and work study. International students are not included in any numbers below. This somewhat goes along with what @bernie12 says above about Emory being more generous than Oxford.
Financial Aid
At Emory University, we think choosing a college should be based on fit, not finances. Your undergraduate experience should start not with limiting choices, but with expanding opportunities. You can afford an Emory education.
Within Your Reach, Within Your Means
When Emory admits you as a student, it means we fundamentally believe not only in your accomplishments to date but also in your potential long after you leave here.
That’s why we are committed to meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need for all accepted domestic students. No one should have to give up their goals and dreams because financial challenges stand in the way.
Average Emory College financial aid package $44,168
Average Oxford College financial aid package $36,074
Total undergraduate financial aid awarded $195.9 million
Percent of students who receive federal Pell Grants 18%
All figures for 2017–18 academic year
Emory is committed to awarding aid based on financial need determined by a thorough review of each family’s circumstances. It’s a good idea to use Emory’s net price calculator to get a clearer picture of the amount of financial aid that might be available to you.
Take the steps necessary to be considered for need-based and merit-based financial aid. And be assured that a top-notch private education is within your reach.
Any idea when decisions are coming out? Or when they came out last year?
Last year, they were released March 30th at 6 pm EDT.
Didn’t they release March 23rd?
Sorry, two years ago. Last year they were the 23rd
Even if schools can tell, it doesn’t matter to applicants. You apply to schools you like and can afford, and wait for results. Truly need blind, not really need blind, or need aware, it just doesn’t matter.
Emory is more generous on the need side than on the merit side. There are pluses and minuses to that, but I think that type of policy drives enrollment of applicants who are motivated to be Emory students. I agree with @vonlost that need based aid matters to Emory on a macro level but not an individual student level. If a student really wants to attend Emory, he or she should apply wait for both admissions and financial package results.
The decision to apply ED1 is a big one, but applicants can make an educated guess there too by using Emory’s net price calculator. https://npc.collegeboard.org/student/app/emory
Are all RD applicants notified simultaneously? Or is it rolling with notification by April 1?
@soccerfan2018
The rest will be simultaneously, The one who were notified earlier were individuals who received some type of scholarship.
i was accepted early decision 1 and they told us that the regular decision kids would be notified on March 22nd this year. good luck to everyone!
@dancingpotato3 how sure are you?
They are as sure as what they read in their letter. They aren’t the admissions office so all they have to go off of is what they wrote in the letter.
Does Emory care about “Demonstrated Interest”? Would a phone call be helpful from my D to her Emory admissions counselor confirming that Emory is still one of her top choices?
@Philsgal At their info sessions and on their website, they say they don’t value demonstrated interest. This was not always the policy and a somewhat newer emphasis in the past few years. Did your daughter do an alumni interview?
@Philsgal
Well written, introspective essays show demonstrated interest. Emory has more essays than most of its peers.
I’ll agree with @VANDEMORY1342 . They are more interested in motivation to go to Emory than they are demonstrated interest. They believe demonstrated interest is your application, but articulating in an essay or interview why you want to go to Emory is different.
When should we expect decisions?
will decisions be released soon?
i just got an email saying that it will be released at 6:00 pm ET on Thursday, March 22. did anyone else get this email?
